how many miles on the flywheel? And what condition is it in?
Rich V 11-23-2005, 01:33 PM Actually they do. I can show you if you want.
Though the ETK calls it a flywheel, it's more commonly refered to as a flex plate. It doesn't have the mass that is typical of a flywheel.
KnightRider/AMG 11-23-2005, 01:45 PM What do you guys think about this one I found? Does it look to be in good shape?

Please, show me an automatic flywheel. I'll be you $100 there is nothing called a flywheel in any automatic transmission in existence.

I think *technically* it can be a flywheel, but not exactly
Too bad mine's not from an m50. I was willing to let my S50 one go for $40 :embarrasm
SQ Bimmer 11-23-2005, 04:44 PM Too bad mine's not from an m50. I was willing to let my S50 one go for $40 :embarrasm
:confused You can get WAY more than that if it is in decent condition.

Seriously, put your money where your mouth is. I've done an auto to manual tranny swap to my M3 man. I have the freaking thing at home. Its specifically call it the automatic flywheel, even ask Allen. I'll meet you at legend import sometime and I can show you the automatic flywheel and you better bring that $100.

Allan was sitting next to me when I wrote that post - we were both laughing. An automatic transmission doesn't have a true flywheel, thats how just how they work. Call allan and ask him what he says if you don't believe me. :rolleyes

How many miles on your S50 flywheel??? I'm interested.

It doesent look that bad but I still would not install it the way it is. The price is pretty good but ya gotta add another 30$. Then the shipping Those things are heavy. Still run you 125. But cheaper than the other. I would buy the one on ebay. If shipping is low. Then take it to a machine shop and have it turned. The picture did not show any discoloration ( black or purple spots). This is an indication of hot spots. not turning the flywheel on a used one or purchasing one with hot spots will make your clutch pedal shudder. Reall pain in the A2#@#. Even buying the one from the guy out here. Id still have it turned.
Its not like changing a brake rotor.

Pay up its called a flex plate. I worked in auto parts from 1985-2000. Also was co owner of machine shop in costa mesa. Different name same function. Both Flywheel and flex plate have a ring gear around them this ring gear is used in conjunction with the starter to start the engine. Both flywheel and flexplate are used or the transmission Primary drive. The Flexplate is a balanced wheel with the Torque converter bolted to it. The opposite side of the torqure converter has the hole where the primary shaft of the transmission goes into. The Torque converter has vanes in the torque converter. The torque converter acts as a centrifigal clutch wich operates the primary shaft of the transmission. The standar transmission uses a heavier flywheel assembly. The flywheel assembly has a ring gear just like the flex plate. The flywheel has a smooth surface in which the Clutch disc is pressed against. The typical Flywheel Takes 6 bolts to mount the Clutch pressure plate against the Flywheel. The Clutch assembly Would be Like the torque convertor of the Flywheel. The primary Shaft of the transmission is Slotted through the clutch disc. Unlike the torque convertor. The Cluch assembly needs to be engaged in order to work. This is done by the Pressure plate and Throw out bearing.
Thank you
Cash or money order will be accepted. I could go on but this is kinda getting long. :stickoutt
KnightRider/AMG 11-23-2005, 07:57 PM Too late to buy anything not local now. Thanksgiving tomorrow, so if I order today I won't receive until next week. So now the search is on for something local, if i don't find anything I'll just wait till I find one whether it be local or not. :(
Angeleye328i, how many miles do you have on yours and what condition is it in? maybe we can work something out.

read my post dude. I have been saying its called a flex disc all along, that was my point.
T-Rex 11-23-2005, 08:39 PM I think he was making a bet with me, so it looks like I just won myself $100. But thanks for the help guys.
Jac, I was betting that it was not called a flywheel. You said it was. scrat and Rich V have both said, along with me, that its called a flex disc. therefore, if anyone owes anyone money, its you who owes me :)
Rich V 11-23-2005, 08:48 PM It's a matter of semantics guys! Just like calling a FWD tranaxle a transmission or calling a transmission a gear box.
auto3251 11-23-2005, 08:51 PM my bentley manual calls it a flywheel, and bmw does, so I will also. How stuff works also does it, it's still a flywheel. It may be a flex plate flywheel, doesn't mean it's not a flywheel. Manual flywheels aren't the only kind of flywheels. My gokart and lawmower has a flywheel, not the same kind but it's still a flywheel.
Its a flywheel man. You owe me money.

flywheel
n : regulator consisting of a heavy wheel that stores kinetic energy and smoothes the operation of a reciprocating engine.
Thats the definition of a flywheel. Everyone thinks a flywheel is only the one that manual transmissions use. WRONG.

If you go by that definition then YOU are wrong. The "flywheel" of an automatic is not that heavy and it's purpose is that of a gear for the starter motor and to attatch the heavy torque converter to the crankshaft.
Like I said...semantics.

heavy is a opinon, that's like saying a lightweight flywheel isn't a flywheel.

Its in good condition. I removed it from Vanosninja car, I believe he brought it new, to do his auto to manual conversion (don't quote me on that).
I live in Escondido 92026, you can do mapquest to find the distance between us.
Let me know and maybe meet up is Saturday, I'll be home during this Thanksgiving break.

Jac, I know its hurts to be wrong, but in this case, you are wrong. If you're that butt hurt, you dont have to pay me :(

no, what he's saying is that the "flywheel" of an automatic doesn't serve the same purpose as one in a manual gearbox, thus that is why its not called a flywheel.

It's not 20 some pounds but it is still heavy. I can show you.
scrat//e36 11-24-2005, 02:44 AM ya its a flex plate hes write and i should have read all the post. however on the flywheel. If you want an awesome feeling clutch have the flywheel resurfaced. Its the best thing you can do.
EvilOne 11-25-2005, 05:08 PM well either way...the auto "flywheel" is not what the original poster was looking for anyways....
SR20Fastback 11-25-2005, 10:28 PM dunno if they're the same, but I've got an M52 flywheel if ya need man.

Imperialduckm3 11-30-2005, 08:32 PM Mine is still available, you still need it? I don't know the exact mileage on it, because I brought the car from VanosNinja and his motor (which the fly wheel came off) was blown
If you want to stop by this weekend, to pick it up. I'll be home this Saturday, working on the car.
Let me know

KnightRider/AMG 12-01-2005, 04:15 AM ^bump still looking for an M50 flywheel. Willing to pay max 150 for one in really good condition with KNOWN mileage.
Imperialduckm3 12-01-2005, 12:39 PM Knight, I'll make you a deal you can't refuse. I am willing to give sell the flywheel for $80. But here's the catch;
I need for you to stop by Hammncheese house (located in Irvine) and pickup some rear seats for me. Bring down the seats with you and I'll sell the flywheel for $80.
Sound cool?
KnightRider/AMG 12-01-2005, 03:49 PM Do you have any pics of the flywheel? Any scoring on the flywheel? Discoloration? grooves?
Coupe E36 12-01-2005, 08:54 PM you can get the flywheel resurfaced ?
KnightRider/AMG 12-01-2005, 08:59 PM you can get the flywheel resurfaced ?
sachs had an article and said that you shouldn't re-surface bmw dual-mass flywheels.
But many machine shops say they can do it for you. So Im not too sure what the deal is?
Imperialduckm3 12-01-2005, 09:25 PM So, paul is it a deal? I need to let hammncheese know about, so he can expect you to come by his pad to pickup the seats for me. If you can't then I need to know now or the latest this Friday afternoon. So I can make plan to pick up the seats myself.
Thanks
KnightRider/AMG 12-01-2005, 10:35 PM I'll let you know before tomorrow afternoon.
Coupe E36 12-02-2005, 01:06 AM hey paul.. well when i had my clutch replaced, sine i was unable to use that m3 clutch kit, i had to buy a new stock clutch kit, and use my old flywheel my mechanic said he just resurfaced it.. and right now really no difference.. well i guess there a few whispering chattering but thats about it.. ?
phillyB///M3 12-02-2005, 04:51 AM Hey Paul I have s50 flywheel somewhere in my pile of parts but I think you already mentioned you cant use a s50 flywheel. Good luck. :)
