There's no difference in the DSP amplifier between a nav and non-nav car.

Sure there is. I did a whole Nav retro and my DSP amp could not be reprogrammed fro Nav so i had to purchase one for the nav.

Interesting.

These are the retrofit instructions for navigation from BMW - http://www.bimmerboard.com/members/jcarey/original/e38_nav_retrofit%20updated.pdf

Notice a DSP amplifier is not included in the parts list and the instructions treat the amp as though it's no big deal if it's there or not.

Also in the ETK there are several part numbers for DSP amps but nothing that delineates nav or not.

That's what I base my statement on.

Trust me we have been over this topic on bimmerboard many times and in the end some people said it could be reprogrammed but only from production date 9/98. I guess earlier models could not be reprogrammed. Saying that, i haven't heard or know of anybody that did reprogram their DSP successfully from NON-NAV car to NAV. What i end up doing is replacing my DSP with one from a 2004 X5 with Nav.

I know my dealer tried everything to get it reprogrammed and could not.

Some people like Jcarey did not even have to reprogram his dsp and eveything worked great but most had to get a new one or try to reprogram it. I guess in theory they should work but in reality is another story.

I am just talking about what i have experienced.

I can't tell if it's funny or sad how you can't let an opportunity go by to turn what could be a civil exchange into something else.

I am being civil. I have been through this one too many times and we all agreed (bimmerboard) that in theory it should work because like you mentioned in the BMW PDF you listed says nothing about a new dsp and one should be able to reprogram it but in reality it CAN NOT be done. We even went as far as trying to purchase the GT machine to try to reprogram it ourselves but that never happened.

I guess if you just want me to say that you stand correct for the sake of you being correct then i will just say that but the truth still remains.

By the way i am not trying to be rude if that's what you are thinking.

John, I used the phrase "I stand corrected". I was acknowledging that what I originally said no longer seemed true based on what you pointed out. I didn't say "I stand correct".

John, you do know what the phrase 'I stand corrected' means, right? I was acknowledging that what I originally said no longer seemed true based on what you pointed out. I didn't say "I stand correct".

My apologies i misread your statement.

LOL I tried to change the wording before it went out (in what you quoted). No problem - end of thread hijack.

I have a DSP Amp with Nav out of a 2001 E-38 with widescreen. Was fully working when taken out of the car, did some upgrades that can be seen here.

I bought a DSP amp from Martin a year back for my car. He said that the amps 'plug and play' if they were from a car that matches your set up. (ie -both with or both without nav). In my case - I do not have nav and he had an amp out of a non-nav car, so... all was well.

He said that the amps would need to be re-programmed by the dealer if you mix nav and non-nav applications.

I tried to take a look at his web site (http://www.bimmernav.com/) but it seems to be slowly going away.

Too bad - He was a nice guy to have around.

Right, but good luck getting the dealer to reprogram the DSP.
