View Full Version : Anyone know if it's possible to get 100LL around here?
I swear to god I'm not thinking of running it on the street or in my bike, I would like to pick up some cheap 11:1 M20 pistons for my 2002 track car and need to make sure I can get some fuel to keep them happy. Anyone know where I can get 100+ octane leaded?

There is a station INSIDE the complex, but I dont know how they'd let him in.

If you are going through your M20, a rebuild with unleaded fuels in mind won't be difficult.
11:1 is also very doable on 93 octane pump gas. Your wallet will also like the 93 octane over the other choices. :)

Getting in is easy. They have these things called gates. you go through them. :stickoutt
The difficult part is finding someone to turn the pumps on for you.
bdigel 11-21-2005, 09:18 PM The exit off of 985 to go to Road Atl "oakwood" there is a Kangaroo that sells race gas last I saw it was 6 dollars a gallon that was during the Arrc two weeks ago
Depending on the combustion chamber of an M20 - 11:1 is perfectly doable on 93. It's definitely doable on 93 + a bit of toluene or xylene.
Honda guys run 12.0-12.5:1 on 93, so it's possible to go higher with a good combustion chamber design.
xatlas0 11-21-2005, 09:47 PM The Shell at Crabapple has 100 octane. I do not think it is leaded, though.
Hmm. OK, I guess I have some ideas then. I doubt an 11:1 M20 would run well on 93. It's an old motor, with no knock control, and I'm going to be tuning it myself on the ME department dyno. (hopefully) Plus it's going to be a track/autox car, so I'm not very concerned about the cost per gallon or the environmental concerns as I'd be unlikely to burn 10 gallons between now and next fall. But anyway, if you guys think I can either run it on 93 or get some higher octane, I'll go for it. Also, I know I can get lead additive and add it to 93 if I need to, I had forgotten about that.
Mr. McCoy, do you really think I could run an 11:1 M20 on 93? And run it hard? I know of guys with 10.5:1 on www.e30tech.com who have to either use 94 or add some additive, but they might just suck at tuning or have a chip or something. I will be running MS with spark control, so I can tune the advance myself.

Don't underestimate how much fuel you can burn in a very short amount of time in a "fun" car. :stickoutt
For reference, my otherwise stock M20B25 (when it was stock compression, stock ignition timing, etc...) I was good to about 9psi of boost. Backing off the ignition timing a bit, I was good to 12 psi of boost (which was limited by the clutch).
8.8 CR (assuming 100% VE) + 7psi of boost = 12.5:1 effective CR
no problems there
8.8 CR (assuming 100% VE) + 9psi of boost = 13.58:1 effective CR
8.8 CR (assuming 100% VE) + 12psi of boost = 15.17:1 effective CR
My only other advise is to run it adequately rich. You should be fine with 93 octane even at 12:1 CR with decent tuning.
Thanks for the advice. Out of curiosity, do you know Sterling, the ME department lab director? He's wreck racing's faculty advisor.

I have met him before, but don't really *know* him.
Cool. He seems like he has a lot in common with you, IE tons of crazy car projects. That's his red 911 in the pics from TGP.
