Okay well ... i've lived in the bear+star state for what? going on 5 years now, so forgive me BUT ...

Only recently, I have come upon the California Burrito ... meat, fries, veggies, insane amounts of yumminess.

I am speechless ...

... discuss if you have the guts to do so.

I live in Lemon Grove, about 15-20 minutes from a certain Roberto (or was it Albertos?) in Santee. I used to drive there at least once a week for their California Burrito.

The California burrito is great when you're craving a burrito, you don't know which one and you're also craving french fries at the same time. Also, burritos are bomb diggity when the tortilla is moist.

burritos should never be moist. the tortilla falls apart.

what part of the bay area?

best burrito in nor-cal is in either fairfield or stockton at adalbertos- its a san diego chain (5 or so locations).

in the bay area... not as much to choose from. i like taqueria la palma in concord. i would drive all the way out there for a craving, it was the only substitute i had found for my time living up there.

Most of the time its fries, but it can be just potatoes.

The california burritos is mostly really a socal burrito. I had trouble getting any kind of a good burrito up north.

There's the BOMBEST burrito place in Mountain View, if you're willing to drive a little.

Burrito Real, 580 N. Rengstorff. They have a card that you check off what you want in the burrito. For the meat, I recommend the Carne al Mojo de Aho... bomb.

These are serious burritos tho, you better be hungry.

Also check out La Costena on the corner of Old Middlefield and Rengstorff. They always win the "Best Of" for Burrito every year, but I always liked Burrito Real better. :dunno

Oh no no -- carne asada super nachos from Loreto's for the 2am drunken meal win. Huge 8x8" carry out container filled with homemade chips, ref. beans, fresh guac, sour cream, chunky salsa, tons of carne asada, tons of yellow shredded nacho cheese, and topped with queso fresco. Best 2DM this side of the Rockies.

Hmm I don't really see a huge ingredient difference between the two where I've gone. Just that one is small and open and stuff falls out a lot, and the other is big and wrapped up and contains the ingredients pretty well. Even the tortillas taste the same except for the ground beef burrito which is the only one made with a crunchy corn shell. I dunno maybe I'm missing something subtle.

well with tacos, you get the corn tortilla, which I like, compared to the flour tortilla in the burritos. Also, with tacos, you only get the meat, onions, cilantro and salsa, you can enjoy more the flavor, and you get to pick different meats. Asada, Al Pastor, carnitas, tripa, etc...However with burritos, it's a mixture of everything, where all the flavors mixed up and you don't even know what your eating.

p..s if you guys haven't tried burritos or tacos 'Al Pastor' you really need to try it.

al pastor does rock, but it has to be done right, i always found the taco carts off the side of the freeway to be the best. must have something to do with the exhaust fumes

also i am in sonora mexico right now, and they have lil flour tortillas tacos down here that will rock your face off

:lol Authentic as a bad case of food poisoning.

You must be dreaming... :nono The Bay Area by far has better AND cleaner Mexican food than SoCal. Even ALL of my SoCalo friends attest to this. Haven't you ever been to Taqueria La Corneta, Pancho Villa, El Toro Taqueria all in San Francisco??? :buttrock How about Casa Orozco in Dublin or Taqueria El Balazo in San Ramon???

If you've ever watched the movie "The Game" with Michael Douglas; he even has a quoted line where he mentions that: "If you've never had a San Francisco burrito/ Mexican food, you haven't lived... by far the best in the country..."

Check them out to know what I mean.

IMO, you can get authentic Mexican all over Cali but Hepatitiis :eyecrazy is sure to follow with the ones I see down SoCal.

check out la bamba in mountain view. it's mobbed during lunch time, so just coming at 11:45am sometimes helps.

right next to la bamba, is la costena, the place tim also mentioned. it's also good. it's inside this run down little grocery store in the back.

in san jose, i like to hit up super taqueria. they have really good carne asada and avocado in their burritos. i can't really recommend anything else though.

some people will claim that la vic's by sjsu is good, but honestly i think their burritos are crap. if you come in after hours, their burritos are stuffed with rice because the drunks from the clubs don't know any better. and people claim their orange hot sauce is the best shit ever. cmon! that hot sauce is not one bit hot! weaksauce!!

--------

back to the original topic, i think the burrito sounds interesting and would like to give it a try. i'm going to have to say too that must be a socal thing because i've never seen it up here in the bay area. i'll give it a try next time i'm down at my gf's parent's house in oc.

Calm down children and sit around the campfire, the master of all drunken/baked 2:00 cravings is here. It is called, the adobada chips.

Chips, adobada meat, melted cheese, guacamole, jalapenos (If you ask for it), sour cream (If you ask for it) cilantro/adobada/cream suace stuff to top it all off.

What to wash it down with? Two ice chilled sangrias straight out of the bottle.

There are very few places that will make this for you.

Is taqueria la bamba the one with like 3 parking spaces up front on old middlefield? They have great pupusas (el salvadorean food), served with great pickled cabbage. This place is a building or two over from that corner place, away from whatever the intersecting street that is (that costco is on). Any idea what I'm tlaking about? Cotixan on Terra Nova, Lolitas on Telegraph, and The Los Panchos on Palm ave. just before heading into Coronado are all fuckin good.. But personally I would have to say that in San Diego.... Colimas is definitely the size leader.
