I'm new to the e34. Just bought a 92 525 a few weeks ago. I was recently running on the Interstate. I was doing about 80 in 5th and the rpms were sitting at around 3500-4000. I was not accelerating, just cruising. Is this normal for the e34 5-speed?
This is my first manual transmission car, so I'm not sure what's normal and what's not. But in my old auto, it seems like running at 80-85 the rpms were closer to 2500 on the Interstate.

not really sure. Usually an automatic car will keep the revs lower at highway speeds because the tranny is really a 3 (or 4) speed + over drive. The over drive gear is geared pretty high exactly for this reason- lower fuel consumption at the cost of acceleration.
My 98 540 does 100mph @ 3k rpm in 6th.

sounds about right, i have a 92 325 (same engine as your 92 525) and 80mph in 5th is about 3600rpm

In my car 80 is right around 4000rpm's and she's getting ready to pull.
3.91 lsd 5spd
00 528
80 mph = 3100k

It's about right for manual transmission at 80.

80 mph = 3100k
*win*Doesn't give you the win. An E39 540 will turn even lower at 80mph because of the taller 6th gear (yes, the title says 5th gear, but I'm assuming we're talking about the highest gear instead). ;)

yeah, look at post #2 :D
how many rpm does an e39 m5 turn at 100mph in 6th gear?

how many rpm does an e39 m5 turn at 100mph in 6th gear? Two things: -In 5th gear, I think a 540 will turn the same RPMs at 80 as a 528 (not sure).
-Gearing should be the same in the M5 (again, I think).

you are probably right. Maybe the 540 turns more rpm at 80 in 5th than a 528. who knows. Ill check it out later and see what happens. I know i can hit speed limiter @ 155 in 5th gear with couple hundred rpm to go.
reason i asked about the m5 is because it has a 3.15 rear end compared to the 540s 2.81. I thought it was the same tranny between the 2 but im sure i am wrong.

Regarding the 528 vs the 540 gearing, I think it's the same gearing except you have an extra gear, i.e. an overdrive gear.
