Just lifted my amp and it's already wicked heavy :confused . I do not want to add more weight via full sized sealed enclosure for 8" sub.

Do I have a choice?
How does infinite baffle set up sound compared to sealed enclosure?
If I go with IB, what would be better, attaching it to rear shelf, or where the ski pass would be?

Thank you for your time and help!

Always have a choice... but it might not be an attractive one.

Not as good.

It's easier to get the skipass to work well if you lack folding R seats. I still want to try a DLS IB 10...

What 8" were you gonna use? If it was one of those ultra long travel ones, it's gonna weight a ton too. If it's not, will you even get enough output from it?

I don't need more bass tha one 8" produces. I compared 8 and 10" and the last one is too boomy for me. Skipass is most likely a no-no; reinforcement ribs are there. I have non folding seats.

Do you know who makes these?

1) That is an old Coustic Design Reference logo. It's disco'd...http://www.coustic.com/classic/PDFs/DR-328.pdf

2) If a ten was too boomy for you, you probably heard one that was way underpowered and crossed over too high.

3) Did you hear one in a moving car?

4) You still didn't say what 8" you're using.

1. Thanks for the info.
2. I heard a few on the stand and played around with frequency on the amp. Still no go. These were MB Quart, JL and Alpine.
3. I was thinking about JL 8W3v2 (2 channels bridged) or 8W0. I heard 8W0 in tweeter and it sounded better than bling looking Polk next to it.

Unfortunately I do not have any good car audio stores around to audition.

Thanks

Cool. Just so you know, I HATE boomy bass.

But listening in a sound room and listening to a woofer that in a trunk, in a moving sedan, are very different things.

I don't think that a single 8w0 in a sealed box will generate enough output from the trunk of a BMW to make any impact on the highway. The resonances of the rolling stock and the frame itself will drown out that 8 - especially given that it doesn't have a ton of travel. Also, the woofer will make higher-frequency noises that you hear when you're a foot away that never make it out of the trunk in real life.

I think it's a good sounding woofer - but I don't think your car will be a good application for it.

Where are you geographically? (I can't see your sig at present...)

You seem to be very much oriented towards sound quality. Maybe I can make a suggestion... do you have an amp installed yet?

1. Do you think 10" would do it?
2. I am quality oriented. I like quality sound.
3. I had auditioned some MTX self powered stuff (10") in my friend's nissan maxima and it sounded horrible to me. Boomy and late would be two words to describe it :nono .
4. Sealed box with some ports in the rear deck or ski pass than?
5. I am in Eastern Mass, 20 mins North of Boston, in Swampscott.
6. Amp is not installed yet. JL e6450 for components (front) and coaxials (rear).
I am open to suggestions and highly appreciate those.

Thank you!

MTX aims for boomy. That's their market... but there are plenty of better ones. There are a number of 10" subs built by companies that are into SQ that should be of interest to you...

I think that a good 10" in a sealed box can give you what you seek. With the amount of power you have, it might be nice to fire it through the skipass.

I hear good things about Alumapro woofers.

We use DLS and their MW110 woofer is around $160 and sounds really good in my car off of 50w x2 bridged (same as your JL, I think).

There is an Eclipse aluminum woofer preloaded in a box for like $200 MSRP that should sound OK in that situation.

What kind of box are you looking at? A wooden box or a fiberglass box or infinite baffle?

Sound In Motion is listed as an Alumapro dealer but I don't know if they are currently. www.sound-in-motion.com. You ought to be able to hear stuff at their shop.

Well, it would be cool if I can stay away from cutting (IB). But boxes are heavy or expensive (fiberglass).
Thanks for the hint on the store, it's actually pretty close to where I study.

Im in Western Ma. (Springfield) if you are ever out this way. We have Alumapro and Rainbow as part of our line up. I personally have a single 12" Alumapro Alchemy in a sealed enclosure (on a Zapco reference 500.1) with a ski pass setup and the entry level Rainbow (Dream Series) 5 1/4 components (on a Zapco reference 360.4) up front. Headunit is an HK trafficpro. This is in a 2000 528i. Feel free to stop by and listen to my car anytime. PM me for the address if you wish.

Dave, by "we" I assume you are a shop. I would like to swing by sometime. What else do you have in 5 1/4 (component and coax)?

Thank you
