'Do not take ur car Here'

Had an appointment - I had problems with my speedometer-

First of all I had an appointment 2 weeks before I dropped it off and they call me the next day saying they do not have an appointment for me- which I needed to pick it up!!!! that was weird already...

So I made an appointment again for the SECOND TIME AND...

Ok So I took my car there (BMW of Arlington!!!!!!) Last Tuesday Night- For Service - dropped it off late left the key at the drop box.

Called them next day- they said they still had not got to it! Even though I had the appointment and they knew what I had brought the car in for. The day after they called me and said

"We will be replacing the instrument cluster and we do not have it we need to order it- your car should be ready by next Monday" I said ok.

I specifically told the guy if my car would be safe and IF he Could take extra care since its was going to be there for that long- He said " you have nothing to worry about- your car will be perfectly safe"

Anyways Monday comes around and I call them 4 times, they never call me back- I m pissed at this point - so I call the Tuesday Morning- they guy finally calls me back and says your car should be ready by this afternoon. And that he would call me right away once it is!!!

So he calls me at 5 pm and says its ready - I tell him I’ll pick up the car tomorrow afternoon.

So I pick up the car- the service adviser apologizes for the long wait... HE SAYS YEAH WE ARE SHORT STAFF AND THATS WHY IT TOOK THAT LONG!

Although the mileage at this point is NOT programmed to the original 56k miles - It’s at Zero and I ask if they can program it- they tell me that’s NOT possible- I said Ok I took the car and I went to work (DAYTIME).

Later on around 8 pm as I am leaving work I come to find out out MY HEADLIGHTS H.I.Ds (philips aftermarket for my E36) won't come On!!! I figured they may have messed up some wiring or a fuse - I say ok I’ll take it back and they'll fix it in 5 minutes.

The next day I am pissed I take it there- The service guy is checking the fuses and blu blu ... can not figure it out!!!

He takes in the back - where they come to find out Someone (most fucking likely their employees) STOLE my HID bulbs and cut the wire from the headlights!!!!!!!

At this point I am SSSSOOOO pissed I can not believe that this could ever happen anywhere especially a BMW Dealership!!!

Then the freaking service manager comes over instead of apologizing he starts talking... he says " Oh am Are you sure when you dropped off your car and left the key in the drop box YOU LoCKED THE DOOR?"

Then he bring the tech and the tech says "Oh yeah I think these wires (headlight HID bulbs) were already cut when u brought ur car in"

I ASK the TECH - Ur supposes to work on my instrument cluster- why would u even be looking at my headlights u Liar??? And U all have had my car for over 1 week- who knows when u guys reallllly started working on the CAR!

I am like Both of these guys are crazy!!!

They had my car for more than 1 week just to replace some instrument cluster and I come to find out from some research that they lied to me - they CAN in fact program your Real mileage rather than leaving it at zero!!!

These guys have No idea what the heck they are doing and I can not believe this happened at all! And to top it off the service manager is talking crap...

At first I was being real cool, but when I noticed what I am dealing with, I flipped out and I told him exactly what I thought!

So anyways he starts coming to his senses and apologizes - then he says

Ok we'll pay for the bulbs - just get it repaired anywhere u like and we'll reimburse you - bring the receipt-

At the end I tell him Yo I have no car And I am not going to able drive until this is fixed- This is even more stupid than anything at this point - check what he say to me.....

"Can not you drive with ur fog lights at Night.....?"

I want to tell him Ur crazy man- so he gives me rental! Thanks alot!!!!!!!!!!!!! They did me a favor huh?

WTF. Did you take pictures of the damaged wiring and missing bulbs?

And wtf is up with them not being able to program the new cluster?

Sketchy sketchy...I'm sorry to hear that happened to you man. :(

I haven't taken a car to a dealership EXCEPT BMW of Towson in a long, long time for reasons similar to this. I've only been to BMW of Towson once (for an alignment) but I was given a tour of the facilities when I was there and had an opportunity to talk to a service advisor. Their shop is very clean and the service advisors were helpful and knowledgeable. I would recommend them.

For all my work that was covered under warranty, etc, I've gone to BMW of Fairfax, and they've been fine. However, most of their staff was transferred to BMW of Sterling, iirc, when BMW of Fairfax came under new management, so I'm not sure how they'd be now. I agree, this is outrageous, but I disagree with John V. judging all dealerships based on select experiences like this, many people I know have had much worse problems with cars at local shops, ie, happened to two of my VW driving friends down here in Tallahassee on two separate occasions. They go into the shop on aftermarket rims, come back on steelies, and they deny any knowledge of any incident.

my car will never see the inside of a dealer...but my car's warranty ran out a LONG LONG time ago. Arlington is the dealer closest to my house and i've only been to the parts counter there. I have more experience with Sterling, again mostly the parts dept. If sterling weren't so far i'd go there all the time.

you really needed a new cluster? damn. did you get to keep your old one? i'd be worried about having odometer rollback alerts showing up on the DMV computers if you dont have ALL the documentation from this "repair". i think a sticker has to be added to the drivers door saying when the mileage change occured.

if they still aren't treating you right, demand to talk to someone higher than the service manager. and not A service manager, but THE service manager (the top dawg). if that fails, call BMW NA. let arlington know you will be filing a complaint with NA if they don't fix this issue. keep as calm as you can but remain firm with your demands. blowing up and frothing at the mouth won't get you too far.

Did I say I ever went to independent shops? No. I don't go to them either. I do all my own work myself.

BMW NA won't do ANYTHING. People cry to BMWNA all the time about this kind of stuff and are told "Every dealer is an independent entity not regulated by BMWNA, sorry about your misfortune, have a nice day. *click*"

for real? that's just dumb. the dealer is carrying the BMW name and logo, which they have spent many many years and much more money building the reputation of.

i had a headgasket fail on my toyota a few years back (80k miles, no overheating). NA didnt do anything, but Jack Taylor personally met me halfway for the repair. NA tried to tell me headgaskets are a wearable item :rolleyes . did i mention that theres an official recall on the headgaskets for 6 of the 7 years my v6 motor was sold? :mad

honda NA replaced my sisters automatic transmission for free at 55k after she called and complained

Arlington is the dealer closest to my house and i've only been to the parts counter there. Arlington's parts dept sucks ballz. There's two guys who work there. A younger guy who's actually pretty helpful and an older hippie who is always grumpy and acts like he's doing you a favor by selling you a part. Oh yeah did I mention they charge above list price? For example, BMW list price for an e39 battery is $145. Fairfax and Towson quoted me $122 with CCA discount. Arlington wanted $185!! And when I asked what the CCA discounted price was the grumpy old man just said, "it's 10% off of that." They also wanted $11 for a $3 turn signal bulb.

The only way to learn is to do. I started out when I was in high school and was too poor to afford shop labor rates to fix my RX-7. I did oil changes, then belts and hoses, then brakes, then shocks and springs, suspension bushings, ball joints/tie rod ends, wheel bearings, clutch replacements and eventually rebuilt my own engine, fabricated intercooler mounts, porting, etc...

And I f*cked up a whole lot along the way but I learned a lot. And my car ran better than it ever had becuase I cared about it, unlike the dealership service techs. :rolleyes

:buttrock It's educational and fun to work on your own car.....when you have the proper tools of course.

I'm waiting for my 540 piece toolset to arrive. Car lifts will be the next addition. :redspot No more mechanics. 95% of them are crooks.

I helped my friend work on his car this weekend. He only took it to the dealer to be worked on. We found SO many bolts and fasteners missing it wasn't even funny. :nono

all very true. i too have dealt with the old hippie who is constantly pissed off. in addition to not knowing how to find parts in the ETK, he also couldn't seem to find a couple parts on the shelf. that's when another older man (i think he runs the parts dept) came over and knew immediately where everything was. he was very nice and knew how to work the ETK. i have also met the younger guy, who was VERY friendly and gave me the wholesale price on the handful of oil filters i was there purchasing :alright

most of the time i get my parts from Sterling b/c the discount i get there is much better, but its FAR away.

i can't agree more w/ JohnV on doing your own work. i have done all the work on my m3 in the one year of ownership. 6 years ago i probably couldn't point out the oil filter on my toyota, but most recently i replaced the headgasket and re-timed the vanos on a friends e36 m3. i've learned it all by doing (and usually breaking it the first time).

the only people besides myself that i trust to touch my car are RRT and my mechanic friend at Don Beyer Subaru

I went to BMW fairfax to get two very small window regulator clips, because mine had broken. List price theyre less than $2 a piece, but I ended up paying $17 for them both. What a joke.

For real. NA may help in a warranty issue but they generally don't get involved between customer and dealer.

Hey, look at VOB. #1 dealer in sales in the Metro area and nobody likes them. :dunno

Yup. Worst service I have ever experienced has been at Arlington.

Especially funny was when service advisor Oliver Mermer tried to charge me 279.00 for an oil change....his excuse was that the oil cost 19 bucks a bottle. Nope buddy, the 10w60 costs about 8 something a bottle, fucktard.

BMW of Towson is awesome...but then again Baltimore>DC. True Story.

Had both good and bad with both Sterling and Fairfax. Fairfax is nasty expensive in the parts department but the service is ever so slightly better than Sterling (who's scratched the car, put the car back together halfassed, and left socket's attached to various driveline components all in seperate visits.

Passport BMW quoted me $250 installed for a new battery last year when I had my car at their dealership for emergency CPO warranty work. I laughed, declined, and jump started the car. I'm still on the same battery today.

i never go to BMW dealership unless i cant find the part else where and even then i take it to someone i trust. their techs dont know anything and they rip you off on everything. for instance a coolant hose that costs $40.00 from Ottos BMW in West Chester cost $22 from Bavarian Specialties in KoP same hose but no bullshit
