Okay this was as fun as it gets. Coming home from the shooting range I make a left turn onto Mission from Sullivan and there is a Silver WRX (not STI) behind me. No mods except exhaust and no cats which I found out at the end of the story. I vowed not to race my M52 e36 anymore because it's a turd compared to my E30 :nono But this I COULD NOT pass up. So after I make the turn first and he immediately gets on my butt and tails the poop out of me. I'm not thinking anything of it... all of a sudden he gasses passed me in the turning lane (it's a 3 lane road with a middle turn lane all they way through). I momentarily hit my gas, but being in 4th gear and going 35mph, it just wasn't gonna happen. So I catch up and am tailing him around 45mph, I drop it into second and pull into the turn lane and come right next to him. There were no honks, just instictive racing. We both go and immediatly I'm pulling on him pretty good through the rest of second gear (60mph), hit 3rd gear and pull about 5-6cls on him through the end of thrid. Hit 4th gear and still pulling when I slam on my brakes because the turning lane is ending. So I spanked him pretty good, and my buddy Mark (the wuss with the Stage III/4+ WRX who won't go above 100mph :mad ) who is riding with me is like "daaaaaaamn! You owned him good!"

So this is the same road where my APT is located and I pull into my compex and I notice the WRX coming in after me. Turns out, he's my new neighbor :D Nice guy... Mark, my buddy asked if he wanted to go again at our "secret" racing spot which he declined with a simple smile and answer "not a chance in hell." He then told me he was wide open throttle and what mods he had done to it thus far and said he wasn't making any ground on me at all and still losing ground :buttrock Chalk one up for the E36 baby!

Thanks! It was very impressive! And Jason, the guy driving the WRX was a very good sport :) From a dig, it might be a different story, but from a roll, I put a lot of CLs in a short amount of time on him :redspot

Forgot to mention, he was egging me on because he had seen my car in the complex a few times and wanted to see how he would do against a M3. When I let him know it wasn't a M3, he had a bewildered look on his face haha.

M52 2.8l Full OBD1 Conversion with M50 manifold, Dinan BBTB, S52 M3 Cams, Fan Delete, Cat Delete, Custom mid-section, stromung exhaust, UUC UDP, Ported and polished head, Cosmos Cai, 3.5HFM, Running my AA chip today which averaged 215whp and 187ft-lbs on the dyno but really ran rich in the top end :(

Only down side was, couldn't get the camera out of the backseat in time to record! I wasn't expecting anything to happen today with the roads a bit wet, and sure enough, I have one of the most fun races I've had in a while :( The whole time I'm going "Mark get the F'IN CAMERA!"

serious, should this come to any surpise? You have 5less HP then him at the wheel then he has at the crank, plus you are just a tiny bit lighter, and he has more drivetrain lost because of the 4wd.

Wasn't a surprise, I thought I would always win against a lightly modded WRX, but not pull that hard on him and that quick. Had never raced a WRX before this in my e36. The numers don't do the racing so you never know. And it's AWD with 26% loss if I recall correctly. As far as weight, with my second passenger and my subbox in the back, we were probably dead even in weight.

uhh Isn't WHP on a stock 2.8 in the 170 range? Someone correct me please if I'm wrong. I didn't do any dynoing until after I spent the first million bucks or so haha

My upcoming engine mods include a Bavauto FPR, UUC Lightweight Flywheel and clutch setup, SMT6 tuning, and some sort of F/I which I hope to be a eurobahn kit or TT kit. Or if money is tight, I'll get a Wet Nitrous kit and spray a 75 shot for fun :buttrock

When you removed your cats did you notice any strong gas fumes while you were driving and when you removed your cats didn't you have to hook up an o2 simulator to kill the ses light? The reason I ask is i'm 80% sure my cats are dying[rattle, rotten egg smell, and I hate cat. converters >)]

My car was a 95 325i originally so I only have one O2 sensor and 2 cats which nothing hooked into. So I didn't need to do any sims for the O2 sensor. But I do from time to time, notice a wiff of gas with them removed which I can deal with. I usually only smell it when I let the car idle for a period of time. Otherwise, no such smell. I can deal with that for the HP improvement I felt in the midrange :buttrock As far as what you should do, I have no idea about the OBD2 setup. Ask in the E36 forum is all I can say.

No biggie, I just don't know about the OBD2 setup enough to make an educated guess for you. I would just buy a AA Track pipe and 02 sims and call it a day.

It replaced you 3.0 HFM with a 3.5" HFM which basically determine's how much air goes into your head. Without proper tuning it probably won't help much at all. And a AA Track pipe replace your midsection/cats with high flowing resonator's which increases WHP. So yes it all would help.

My freind has a suburu thats not a WRX, and he has ripped out part of the firewall to save weight, and chipped it. He says its just as fast as the nonturbo wrx like 250 hp or something. So you car must be fast.

^ Thanks man... and I don't know about a non-turbo WRX being as fast as the turbo version with only a chip and some weight saving removals. My car IS NOT a fast car, check out some of the guys in the F/I forum *cough* card counter *cough.* But my car can handle it's own against the average street car.

Just cruising...I always shift and leave it in 4th for the most part.. low rpms = better gas mileage :D
