View Full Version : what oil is everyone running??
tlmitf 11-11-2005, 07:12 PM personally im running Penrite 40w-70
but my valve stem seals are STUFFED {again:mad } so im trying to keep the oil where it belongs.
thing still sounds like a diesel, runs like it soo, burning all that oil :( :help
greggearhead 11-11-2005, 07:26 PM I use mostly new oil. Kinda brownish.
E36BimmerJunkie 11-11-2005, 07:32 PM I use Mobil 1, the engine runs so much more smoothly than it did before with the regular oil.
blitzed310 11-11-2005, 07:59 PM Mobile 1
20-50
waferman 11-11-2005, 09:20 PM I'm curious; with all the hype about Redline, why Mobil 1 over Redline? Price? Do you have much seepage around the oil pan gasket and front timing chain covers? Im going to re-gasket my engine before I put it in the car, and I wonder what the synthetics will do. I was also told that 20/50 redline was overkill...

320ipyro 11-11-2005, 09:27 PM i use the p one (the name escapes me) 10w 40
Yonkers320is 11-11-2005, 10:29 PM 40w-70? that is a very heavy oil. you will probably get more damage to your motor that way. run some 20w-50 and a bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer.
I'm running BMW oils 15w-40, temperature went down to lower 50s so 20w-50is a little too thick. Also my engine temperature only reaches 135-150*F, even in long trips.......

being a full mineral oil it does actually protect quite well.
the south australian importer is a personal friend of mine, and he was saying that the heavy oil in the stuffed motor is okay.
i have done 160,000 miles original bottom end, and 3rd, yes 3rd head.
also living in australia helps too, cos our temp doesnt drop below freezing, and gets up over 45*C {113*F}
i was running a thinner oil, 20w-50 i think, but that would get burned at a silly rate.
also because im burning so much oil, i took a leaf out of the rotary book - and switched to mineral oil, as it burns cleaner and without a sticky residue. also reduces the chance of glazing up the bores.
jrcook320 11-11-2005, 11:06 PM I use a mix of budlight and urine. Duraspooge 3000.
Jmabarone 11-11-2005, 11:11 PM what about during the winter months?

racer1044 11-11-2005, 11:42 PM Kinda off topic but does anyone run synthetic? Ive ran Amsoil synthetic products in my truck and got better gas mileage. I have a 89 silverdo with a 3 speed manual that i still get 19 miles to the gallon with 250,000 plus miles on it. I was wondering if there was anything wrong with running synthetic oils in the motor tranny and Diff.
320ipyro 11-11-2005, 11:49 PM ok... now i remember the name... PENSKE!!!!

blitzed310 11-12-2005, 12:01 AM When I pulled the valve cover the other day, the head looked like it never saw oil before. Looked like the day it came back from the machine shop. Crazy synthetics...

will this work in my 2.8l stroker?
jrcook320 11-12-2005, 12:20 AM Yeah, but you'll probably want to go with a 60/40 mix of budlight/urine unless its knife edged. Otherwise the beer will froth up pretty bad with the extra swing of the crank.

AlaskaBimmer 11-13-2005, 03:54 AM so if 20w-50 is too thick for cold weather what should i use? a warm day here is about 65F.....I just put 20w-50 because it said so in the manual
