View Full Version : I've owned my car for less than a week and..
Goofynick6 11-10-2005, 10:20 PM ...this is what it looks like right now.
After cleaning it all up:

My rear lifting point just isn't there on the engine; made things a bit difficult! Anyway, it's out. I'm taking the head off, getting it milled, .120 VAC gasket. Then new retainers, valve seals, gaskets everywhere. Leaving the shortblock intact since I think it is ok.
Audspeed manifold should be here tomorrow, so that will go on as well. Then I'm going to make a custom motor mount for the turbo inlet..etc etc. Doing everything myself (minus tuning), so should be a fun project! Can't wait to get the headwork finished though, that's the hardest part if you ask me.

Good luck, keep us posted and take lots of pics.:buttrock

Ack...that doesn't look pretty...but that's an opportunity to make it better and faster. Did you ever end up deciding on which turbo to get? You decide to do it right the first time and go GT3540R? :stickoutt
Also, if for some reason your Audspeed manifold doesn't come with a wastegate pipe...you should do what was done on my car...cut the 318 battery box, and mount your W/G up top, then have the dump shoot straight downward....not back into the exhaust :evil2 makes life easier, and makes mopowa!
Goofynick6 11-10-2005, 11:35 PM Interesting idea about the wastegate, but I kind of prefer keeping the wg hooked into the exhaust for a street-car (I may run an electronic cutout though :))
I sent a money order out today to BFC member "onelap" for a new turbo. Thanks to my daily driver (89 tracer) being a b*tch and needing a lot of maintenance as of late, and other reasons, I decided to go with the SC61 with .82 a/r housing. It's similar to the gt35R (same compressor wheel), but should be quick spooling and plenty large for the power I want.
Nick
DefactoM6 11-10-2005, 11:45 PM Yeah, the SC61=good move if you want GT35R power with a slight sacrifice in spool and flow (I was under the impression it doesn't have GT-series turbine wheels, even though it has the GT35R compressor wheel).
And just because you run your wastegate seperate doesn't mean that it has to be deafening, get a used can off a crotch rocket (those guys take cans off their bike all the time it seems like) and weld it onto the end of the pipe. Bam! You just added a ton of flow and less backpressure to your exhaust without making it bigger! And you know that turbos looove less backpressure...
Also, if you direct the piping properly (remember, the pipe outlet will be shooting downward in the engine bay area, as opposed to directly underneath you like cars with W/Gs mounted more remotely) it won't be as loud on the inside as you'd think...maybe it's just me, but I think having open WGs is fucking cool...it scares the living shit out of drivers/pedestrians etc when you get on boost, reach the BC's threshold and the WG opens....they react as if someone's set off a massive explosion in the street...but it's not, it's your car making powa!
Goofynick6 11-11-2005, 11:15 AM lol, you comments on the open wg crack me up. I'll consider it ;)
Nick
DefactoM6 11-11-2005, 02:05 PM Glad my comments and insight entertain you. I can promise you that you'll be more entertained when your car opens its WG when driving past tons of uptight, crotchety wannabe patricians...the look of sheer terror and outrage is just priiiiiceless...(if you're looking to piss them off...but with a turbo M3, you could still piss them off even if you weren't running an open WG, it's just easier to do with an open WG)
Oh yeah, girls drop their panties when they see a guy driving a car with an open WG. It's a scientifically proven fact. Open WG=drop teh pantiess!!!111one
Goofynick6 11-11-2005, 03:50 PM LOL...the panty dropping comment

bigbore 11-11-2005, 06:16 PM
man that will be nice when finished
nice car too, musta been "cheaper" with the bad motor in it!? :D
Goofynick6 11-11-2005, 10:47 PM Got it from Chad Bivens (R.I.P.) for $9k with some mods, but then it ended up costing me over $1100 to get it shipped to me (shipping companies suck!), and to get the title from the previous owner..heh. SO, I paid a little more than I was expecting, but I'm in love with the car so far. I love how it looks and cannot wait to actually be able to drive it!

M Roady 11-11-2005, 11:49 PM Sweet! Yeah, using chocolate milk instead of oil is usually a bad idea.:stickoutt It's kind of interesting that you won't have ever driven the car in the NA state.
Speaking of VAC, they do headwork. Stage III looks interesting. Couldn't hurt.
deathray187 11-11-2005, 11:50 PM gotta love that head gasket milkshake. my E30 had that, except only in the cooling system, such a PITA to get out of the radiator.
sounds like you're going to have one heck of a car afterwards.
Goofynick6 11-12-2005, 01:38 AM Yeah, before I got it they'd replaced the waterpump, thermostat and housing, radiator and hoses trying to stop the overheating. So, the cooling system is all new, just gonna be a huge PITA cleaning out the oil system.
Stage III head would be nice, but that's stage III $$$..haha. I'm hoping it will be a nice car as well. I would have loved to drive it NA, it was supposedly a "freak" M3 and was pretty quick. Oh well, it'll be really quick when I'm done :)

RRdawho? 11-12-2005, 08:30 AM Didn't come with the wastegate piping?

Goofynick6 11-12-2005, 10:44 AM Nah, I got it from another BFC member for $410 shipped, which is fine by me. I see on ebay Audspeed is now charging $600 for them. I love how it is just the spa turbo manifold with the "spa turbo" ground off it..heh.
Nick
RRdawho? 11-12-2005, 02:01 PM Wow, they raised the prices? Haha, a month ago they were 450 shipped.
Goofynick6 11-15-2005, 04:50 PM Well, looks like it's time for a full rebuild! So much for buying a car with a "blown headgasket"!! Oh well, I kind of planned for something like this.

Nick
DefactoM6 11-15-2005, 07:07 PM I would see if you could locate some stock S50 pistons, throw them in, clean the damage up in the cylinders, get a stock HG and studs, put the head back on and sell it as a complete S50. Then find yourself an M52. Yank slugs, rods, crank. Find S52 crank. Have it inspected, fluxed, etc...whatever neccesary to make sure it's solid. Call up Ross or other piston company of choice, have them make you pistons for M52 bore and the compression you want (I'd do a 9:1 setup based on your goals...since you're concerned about spool). Call up Eagle or other rod company of choice, give them all neccesary specs, get rods (I said eagle and ross because both make good stuff and aren't insanely expensive). Get M3 cams or some other cams that are better than the 328 items. Get the OE dual valve springs. Sell 328 rotating assembly+cams. Put the whole shebang back together with a VAC .71 gasket, ARP studs, etc.
By my calculations, with a slight overbore (for peace of mind) that would make a motor that's anywhere from 3025-3065ccs of displacement, and you'll have to worry way less about blowing it up. Also, you'll end up recouping nice money by selling the S50, since they're worth more than M52s. You'll still be in for more money than you bargained for, but you were that way already. And now you'll have a motor that's more bulletproof than if you decided to just build the S50, and is bigger, for only marginally more $...
P.S...don't forget about the oil pump nut :D
Goofynick6 11-16-2005, 04:08 AM Haha, that sounds nice and all, but it won't happen for several reasons. One is I don't want to spend that much time and effort on this, and two, if a lil' 2.8L can make 635whp, I think my engine will do 400whp just fine with stock parts. I am looking for some stock S50 pistons to slap in and still use my VAC .120 gasket. I'll do new bearings, etc, and I think it will hold up fine for what I want. If I start doing all those fancy parts and building it for 700hp, then I'll have lost sight of my original goal, and I don't want to do that with this car.
So, if anyone knows of some decent S50 pistons, I may be interested.
