I am thinking about an e30 to serve as a beater and a ski shuttle. How feasible is that with Hakki's or Blizzaks? Should I consider studded tires? This is my first winter in Denver and I am not sure how well an e30 with snows handle the passes etc?
thanks for your input

325ix is what i would go with.

and i hate to break it to ya but those are some itty bitty cars, and im thinkin it might be hard to fit skis in it. and even harder to fit many sets and some people in it.

or you could buy a beater toyota. they might rust to hell but they will probably run forever, and they got 4wd. like an 80s tacoma with a bed cover, they are pretty much indestuctable.

Ski rack.

I would go the 325iX route. Get some nokians. Studded tires are good, but you do not need them.

I do sometimes use the E28 M5 for trips up to ski. I use a yukon most of the time however.

my few issues with the ix is that it is considerably heavier, more headaches to deal, transfer case and the poorer mpg. the cool thing with an 325is is that I can have more fun with it at the autox during the summers. That being said, anyone have a cool ix with a 5 spd?

i alrady have my yakima rack from my previous 325i that i sold in July, I know I am a dumb a@#, I just have the e30 crisis again. I sold both my e36 m3 and e30 325i the same month and I miss the e30 more than the m3.

I had a window of thirty minutes to buy a cherry 88 m3 with 50k miles and i was two minutes too late. I guess it would have been the best of both worlds.

Cheers

I just sold my E30 325is which I used as a daily driver all year round.

In the winter, with a set of Winterforce snow tires, the car performed quite well. As long as you keep the car on the road, and dont plow through snow drifts, you'll be fine. My car acted as a snow plow at times due to the fact that it was lowered, but never stopped the car.

If you are interested, I think i've still got the roof racks, which I'd like to sell.

I wouldn't take it up through the passes. Around town it'll be fine. Get an old Audi Quattro if you truly want a ski pass bombing machine.

A 325I is a fine car in the snow with some Nokian tires.

I have an old Audi Quattro for sale. 86 4000cs quattro. PM me if interested.

No an Audi Quattro with snow tires is an awesome snow car. A 325I with snows is merely adequate.

Going to be just as good as any other 2wd car in the snow. You want a ski shuttle that can handle the snow, then you know what you need. 4wd.

Figure out what you want first. BMW? Performance? Or snow capabilities?

Not hardly as good as front wheel drive 2wd cars. Face it, rwd cars are at the bottom of the pecking order as far as handling inclement weather conditions. They excel in dry weather and on track, but for snow and ice, 4wd, then fwd, then rwd.

Dude, I take my M3 up every weekend, I do 40+ days a year (last season I had the M3) and it did awesome going up. I don't have ASC too, you'll be fine, they hold their own. Plus...I fit three boards in the back and three people (including myself) up, and it does awesome! haha...actually I took it up today (no snow) but I did! Oh yeah, and I run Michellin Pilot Sports....hope thats worth something. But I think what everyone is saying about a 325ix is right on. Those things rock, you won't have any problem with that car.

No man, drove by it though. I hit up A-basin and Keystone...didn't get to ride Keystone, but A-basin was amazing!

oh...I just realized that you were asking about a 325is...I had one of those before my M3 and also took that up alot, that however did have the traction control and I drove it on Yokohama tires...good cars to go up with, plus....with the RWD, you can have some fun in the parking lot at the end of the day, hehe.

If you haven't tried " Blue Sky Basin" behind Vail Mtn. and you can handle the terrain, then I suggest you make it a point this year. All natural, no crowds and steep and deep!!! If you hang out at Garfinkels or the Saloon you could probably crash on a couch and do it two days in a row. oh yeah, If you don't own snow chains, tuck a twenty in the visor, if conditions are bad there is always some guy selling them on the side of the road at most tire check stops. The cops wont' let you pass if you dont have proper tires, but a 20$ bill could save you a bummer of a U-turn.
