View Full Version : A quick seat install question
Driverk 11-08-2005, 04:15 PM I did a search under 'race seat install' and nothing helpful came up.
I'm going to order my Sparco Evo 2 next week. I want to go ahead and order all of the mounting stuff, but I just want to make sure of what all I need to order. I'll probably get the seat from soloracer.com and the mounts from speedware.
Do I just need the slider and side mounts, or is there anything else? :help
Get either the VAC adaptor or TCK version. I can source either for you.
jrkoupe 11-08-2005, 04:42 PM what car?........VAC item is nice....you dont NEED sliders.
jayhudson 11-08-2005, 04:42 PM I have the same seats in my car. VAC floor mounts and Momo side mounts. No sliders. Everything is okeydokey.
BTW, seats are now named Evo L (for large).

Driverk 11-08-2005, 04:42 PM Thanks for the info! Which one is better? I've heard good things about the VAC mounts but not a lot from the TC ones. What is the difference in prices?
E36 328is. I do want sliders. It's a double duty car.
benaj 11-08-2005, 07:19 PM If you are going to do sliders with the Evo2/L, good luck custom fabricating the tckline brackets to fit. They are designed for the Recaro seats and NOT for the Sparcos. If you must use them with Sparco seats, be prepared for some quality drilling and grinding time . . . . Several of us on this board have attempted this route already (myself, member "dngo" also comes to mind). Do a search on tckline and sparco if you want more info.
My advice to for those trying to fit Sparcos in E36s is to either go VAC, Speedware, Wedge or custom. Whatever you do, don't get the Sparco E36 specific mount, unless you are "vertically challenged" and don't mind sitting up high on a throne while you drive.
To answer your original question, you need a seat, a set of side brackets (either steel or aluminum, your $$choice), a slider (if desired), a BMW E36mounting bracket and a Sparco hardware set to bolt everything together. Anyone who sells you a seat should also be able to guide you as to what all you need for install in an E36.
Good luck,
ben

Hey Can you elaborate on the sparco mounts. I am somewhat Vertically Challenged (5ft 7") and like to sit close seat all the way forward, and all the way up at the front. I don't want to be too low, although my head does rub the top of the car sometimes.
Thanks.
Jeremy

Jeremy, you will probably be safe. I have 5" of height above you and had a tiny bit of room to spare up top with the sparco mounts in a non-sunroofed E36. My problem with the sparco mounts was that I was sitting so high, the left side of my helmet was hitting the driver's window bar of my old Autopower cage, preventing me from looking left when I drove with my helmet on. I ditched the cage for a McMahan special and went to VAC mounts and now sit comfortably on the floor with tons of room. In fact, I can drive the car without a helmet while belted in and have no risk of my head touching any of the cage if I get into an accident on the way to or from the track.
If you don't mind the slight left-of-center driving position of the sparco seat mounts, I would save some $ and go with them for your height. If the mis-alignment bothers you, go with VAC. Don't worry about sitting "too low". The side seat mounts (that bolt the seat to the slider and/or floor adapter) will be height adjustable. My wife is 5'2" and has VAC adapter plates in her track car-- she just has the seat mounted in some of the upper holes of her side mounts vs my car where my seat is mounted with the lower ones of the same side mounts.
hope that helps,
ben
tatawaki 02-19-2006, 11:39 PM Getting much closer to buying some mounts, I do require the stock seat beat recepticle, and speedware is the only one I know of that has the tab.
VAC = no. However if there is a way to create a tab for the recepticle then great.
and more info on the wedge?
Thanks,
Jeremy
nicholas 02-25-2006, 07:29 PM VAC does have a tab for mounting the stock seat belt recepticle to. It is a separate piece you have to buy from them. I have it on my E36 M3 VAC mounts. I am actually removing them from the car, so if anyone wants a pair of used VAC mounts with the seat belt tab please PM me.

nicholas, is there anyway you can post a pic of what the VAC seat belt tab look like? Thanks man.
JClark 02-25-2006, 10:33 PM ^^^ What he said.

Yeah, I'd like to know to....guess those e30 receptacles will be useless Jesse :(.
JClark 02-26-2006, 01:57 AM Haha Yeah, they might be back up in the for sale section, who knows.
nicholas 02-27-2006, 02:58 AM I'll get a pic of it. It is basically a triangular piece that attaches with two bolts to the side of the VAC mount (there are two holes in the side of the inside mount). Has a round cutout to mount a seat belt recepticle to. Give me a day or two to get a pic.
tatawaki 05-13-2006, 11:48 PM Update:
dissapointed that the Speedware with sparco sliders/sidemounts and EVO throws you off centre by a lot! I haven't measured yet. worst, the holes don't line up at the base to attach to the car. looks like I'm going to grind the 4 mounting holes a little wider to get all 4 bolts in. OR can I take a hammer and bend the metal a bit?
What's my solution to getting the seat centered? I was thinking of taking the mount to a shop, get them to cover the old holes (weld a new plate there), and drill new ones.? any other suggestions?
what's my solution to getting the seat centered?
slcook54 05-14-2006, 01:18 AM The holes do in fact lines up. Did you put a lot of pressure on the mount or did you just lay it on top of the holes? At first it will appear that it won't line up but if you apply a lot of pressure (sit on it) it will force the edges out. Don't know about the seat centering, I'm a little off to the left, but nothing serious.
tatawaki 05-14-2006, 12:06 PM I'll try and put pressure on the mount to get it to line up, I'm taking it to a metal working place to re-weld and drill some new holes. I'm WAY off to the left.
another thing, I was using the stock bolt which has a ~1.5" shaft which is intefering with side mount as I slid it over. there are two holes on the OEM receptical, the stock mounting point is almost rectangular shaped with curved top and bottom. I won't be able to use that, so is it alright to use the other hole? I'll try and get pics.
Thanks,
Jeremy
