View Full Version : Help with tire gel
Filip75 08-18-2002, 04:55 AM Hey guys,
I have use all kinds of gels and sprays for my tires, but all of them seem to spray black stuff on the car, while driving.
Any recommendations on other products.
Hyperion 08-18-2002, 05:10 AM Spray gels suck.
No other way to put it.
Try Meguiars Endurance, it is affordable, and can be found at any Pep Boys, or Kragen.
BMLRacer 08-18-2002, 08:32 AM I agree with Hype..
Here is what I do, Apply Endurance to the applicator, and apply to tires, after you do the tire once or twice, roll the car backwards a few feet so that you can get all the way around the tire, use some instant detailer applied to a towel and wipe the wheel lips of any residue, go inside, have a cold drink, shower, and get ready to go out. That should have taken you about 45 minutes from the last time you touched the car. Now, right before you head out, take a towel and wipe off the tires. The tires will still be shiny, but you'll get all of the excess goop that wil spray on the car off of them. Go pick up your date in style
z 318is 08-18-2002, 09:10 AM Normally I don't use Armor All products but their Tire Foam one seems to work fine. Just spray it and your done. The foam goes away on it's own.

SilverStreak 08-21-2002, 07:53 AM Yes, also I've had good luck with Turtle Wax's Tire Wax, it's a liquid, you put it on the applicator pad that comes with it, rub it in, let is set for a few minutes and then wipe it again, even it out, and it produces a nice wet looking shine that lasts for a very long time and does not come off the tire and get on your paint or wheels.
Cobra Jet 08-22-2002, 09:43 AM 1 product that works THE BEST, 100% GUARANTEED....
ZAINO Z16 Perfect Tire Gloss
Guys, this stuff is THE best and as long as I have been using it, it has NEVER EVER left the tire once it is applied - it NEVER "splashes" all over the side of the car at all...
It is a liquid, pure liquid form, not a "semi" liquid/solid compound.... it is as pure form liquid gets (think of water....). You apply it to an applicator, such as an old wax "pad" applicator and then apply it to the tires. Once it is applied, it looks great. It does not leave that "fake" glossy look, but it is also not "flat", think of it as a SATIN finish - glossy, but not over done.
The product rocks, as do all Zaino products.... It goes on easily, and like I said, will not splash or spray off the wheels as you drive away...

All of you will LOVE the tire stuff, trust me on this... I've tried all the BS products in the stores, and have since NEVER bought another store product again after using all of the ZAINO products...
SilverStreak 08-22-2002, 05:09 PM Phil, when are you gonna detail my car? :D
big A 08-27-2002, 08:29 PM I use a paint brush with Meguiar's Endurance. It takes no time at all, covers all of the tire, does not sling on the side of the car, and does not get on the wheels. Just let it soak in for a few minutes before driving.
PhilH 08-27-2002, 09:11 PM Don't all of these tire dressings turn the tires brown after they wear off? I just bought Meguires Endurance gel and have been using it on a new set of tires, and after about two weeks the tires looked worse than they did before I started.
Are there any that don't turn the tires brown? I switched to Meguires because I thought it wouldn't do that.
:95
Cobra Jet 08-27-2002, 09:37 PM I can add this:
Zaino's Perfect Tire Gloss will NOT turn the tires brown after use, after a rain, after humidty, after driving through road debris, etc...etc...
Never had any issues with their tire product.
Other brands? YES - all of the other brands I have tried in the past always turned the tire sidewalls brown, they also collected a ton of dirt/dust, and always slung the shit all over the sides of the car when driving.
SilverStreak 08-28-2002, 07:48 AM Actually even that Turtle Wax Tire Wax stuff has kept them black, no sign of brown at all...
Hyperion 08-28-2002, 01:47 PM Yes, quite strange. I have never experienced browning tires.
And I cannot see spending extra for a Zaino product + shipping in most cases when Meguiars Endurance can be bought at any Kragen or Pepboys... and provides equal if not superior results.:dunno
Bozo325 08-28-2002, 09:01 PM At first I thought sending away for little plastic bottles of Zaino car polish was silly too... what could be that much better than products from the big companies at just about the same cost ?
At any rate, and just for the hell of it, I wrote a check, printed the silly hardcopy order form, sent it off in the mail and got some.
I'll just say that if the Zaino tire dressing works even HALF as well as their polish, it's worth every penny. I'm about to order more Zaino polish and will try the tire dressing this time around too.
Zaino is simply amazing.
Freshly waxed.. face it, the shine is similar to other quality products... but as the months go by, the Zaino still looks absolutely 'fresh' and sheets water off.. while the conventional waxes look dull (or are gone) and water is wetting the paint.
I'm so impressed by it that I'm getting several bottles of Zaino as gifts for my friends... which is a pretty strange idea... gift bottles of car polish.
Did I mention that I like Zaino?
Hyperion 08-29-2002, 12:44 AM I am about ready to start coining the phrase InZaino....
I swear people bust a nut over this shit for no reason. Yes, they make a product that works... But is it the end of the world? No... And actually there are many other products out on the market which can do just as good a job and outlast Zaino not to meniton are more affordable. Not to mention that the Zaino system is an entanglement of product after product, one requiring you to buy another to buy another to buy another... Good marketing not a good design.
I don't know why people go InZaino, it is a very weird phenomenon...:dunno
SilverStreak 08-29-2002, 08:19 AM Yes, I too, have heard that Zaino (and Griot's products, for that matter) are wonderful, but that they do not last that long...
Bozo325 08-29-2002, 09:40 AM Hype (or anyone)... Ok I give up, what outlasts Zaino, costs less (say $10), can be applied in any weather and doesn't chalk your trim ?
Heck, I'll try it too.
Also, what's the product entanglement you speak of ?
I use clearcoat Zaino with nothing else. They do make a pre-cleaner for the first coat...and an acellerator agent (I guess if you're in a real big hurry), but they are not required at all.
Are you thinking of Zymol where they have the big multi-step system?
Ok, so why such enthusiasm?
I live in car maintenance hell... 'on the beach'... . Almost every day the car is coated with a nice salty haze. After 35 years of waxing cars and trying literally dozens of products... finding a wax that lasts for months is a real godsend to me.
myred318i 08-29-2002, 12:04 PM Eagle One - Doesn't make a cheap "shine", doesn't sling, and doesn't turn my tires "brown"
Hyperion 08-29-2002, 07:37 PM P21S... Endurance, Stoner, Aerospace 303...
The list goes on and on.
Product enganglement is there. If you go to their application page it says you should be using this product with that product and so on. You obviously can use them as stand alone products, but it is just their entire marketing scheme that is flawed.
I am just getting really tired of the people who go InZaino. They do make nice products, but I have seen FAR too many people who act like it is the end of the world if it is not Zaino, which is just foolish. There are many other companies out there that make better or comparable products... P21S Blitz, Blackfire, Autoglyum, Klasse, Nu Finish, Pinnacle... and about a hundred others. So I am just saying I don't get it and I have no clue why people are so out of control towards a product when it is not that special.
I would just chalk it up to a coincidence, but it is not too many times I have seen people go InZaino.
big A 09-01-2002, 04:57 PM It is a great product at a fair price that does an excellent job.
You complain that no one posts here and now when they do, you complain about the products they post about.
You like your stuff and other people like their stuff.
Hyperion 09-01-2002, 05:55 PM My friend has it. Personally I think it is overpriced and hard to obtain when you consider shipping costs.
It does do its job though, I will give it that. But there are also so many other products out there that I think it is a little out of its league.
That is just my personal opinion, and yes, I like my stuff and others like there stuff. I guess that is what it comes down to.

I would never use NuFinish. Yeah it works. Good luck trying to paint your car if you ever need to. Those "space age polymers" create such a bond that paint won't stick to it.
Have you ever tried one that was called "Mirror Glaze" or "Miracle Glaze" or something like that? A friend of mine bought some quite a few years ago. He treated his refrigerator with it, and then challenged anyone to put a scratch on it with a set of car keys: no one was successful. Very interesting stuff. I have a feeling that refrigerator is sitting in a scrap yard now, a shining avocado green beacon amongst all the refuse.

Stay away from Armor All, first up.
I used to use Black Magic Tire Wet on my Talon, but I experienced the "brown tire" thing there. I found that most tire treatments were petroleum based, which was what caused the browning. It also caused the moisture in the rubber to get pulled to the surface, which is where part of the "wet look" came from. Of course, this eventually dried out the tire, causing rot. Armor All is the worst of all of these. They had one product I would consider using, and that was the "Low Gloss" line - of course, I think they pulled it off the market or seriously reduced production, because I never see it anymore.
I switched to Meguiar's Endurance Gel, which works very well, and its silicone/polymer based, so it doesn't rot the tire or cause browning.
Prep is everything with a tire treatment, so follow these steps:
1. Wash your wheels and tires first. I'll say it again: first. If you get any overspray, brake residue, splatter, or the like on your paint, you'll be washing it off in a matter of minutes. Just give it a rinse until then.
2. Don't let your wheels get caked with grime before you wash them. I hit mine at least once a week. If I don't let the brake residue build up, I can use regular car wash suds to clean the wheels. I can also use my most recently retired cotton detail mitt to clean the tires and wheels, instead of a brush.
3. Scrub the tires thoroughly. Then scrub them again. Every bit of grime and residue you get off now is a bit that wont screw with your tire treatment.
4. When you're done, go around and dry each wheel and tire with a soft towel. Do it a second time when you finish, because there will probably be some drips.
5. Use a tire gel applicator pad, which most parts stores sell. Its a rubber block fitted with a curved sponge. Keep it in a plastic bag when you're not using it. Once its saturated, you generally don't have to keep applying gel, because there'll be enough in the sponge to last for a while.
6. Let it sit for a few minutes to dry. If you notice unfinished areas as it starts to dry, wipe it down and apply a second coat.
7. Wash your car.
netgeek 09-03-2002, 06:00 PM The Endurance works great IF the tires are clean to begin with. There's some stuff called Purple Power (at Pep Boys and elsewhere). Spray that on the tires (especially if they're browning), wait about two minutes and hose it off. You won't believe it. Then follow up with Endurance (or any of the other things mentioned above). But try the Purple Power first!
Brent_Vino 09-03-2002, 10:51 PM This is the stuff I use and get no splashes after I drive...
This stuff is purple and smells like Grape.... good enough to eat!
its a bitch getting it off ur hands though, i use comet to remove the stuff.
best stuff ive ever used.
///M3ryder NY 09-16-2002, 12:00 PM Eagle One Tire Gel is good stuff. Don't drive immediately after application, obviously... Everything needs a little time to settle.

Oh thats because the slippery feeling you get from it isn't actually the Purple Power. I believe all the purple "solvents" are actually base pH, which has a rather disgusting affect on adipose tissue...
The slippery feeling is actually the subcutaneous fat in your hands after its dissolved and brought out of your skin.:D
Kyle K. 09-22-2002, 09:56 PM Ok.... about the Meguiars Endurance Gel..... how the hell do you guys apply this stuff? The bottle I bought didn't come with any applicator or anythign so I just took an old rag, folded it up, slapped a line of gel on there, and proceeded to try to get it onto the tire... the problem was that the rag kept bunching up and rolling over itself and whatnot. What do you guys use to apply this stuff?
Chuck 09-22-2002, 11:31 PM Kyle, you need a tire and wheel detailing sponge. Its a curved bit of foam attached to a rubber block. Pep Boys and everyone else sells them, usually in a two or three pack for a few bucks.
Kyle K. 09-23-2002, 05:19 PM Yeah, I figured I needed something like that. Thanks Chuck :)
big A 09-24-2002, 10:04 AM I use a 2" paint brush. You can pick them up for a dollar or two. Put it in a plastic bag when finished until the next use.
Those foam applicators get so nasty over time.
abellofi 10-17-2002, 01:53 PM Keep your used applicator sponges in a Zip-loc baggy and they will never dry out and go bad.
Madman 10-17-2002, 04:50 PM One thing that I use and does not come off and does not leave a fake shine but leaves a new tire look and lasts and lasts no matter how many times you drive in the rain and wash is LEXOL VINYLEX I use it on the inside dash and plastic parts and on my tires. It is the best stuff I have ever tried and it never turns the tires brown I just spray it on a rag and redo the tires once a month . The tires look brand new not overly shiney but new looking just like the dash. It looks like it is brand new even on our sons 6 year old 3 series.
joe325i 10-17-2002, 07:08 PM i first used the armorall spray... it stained my driveway, and my dad made me reseal the whole thing...
armorall pros: cheap pretty (2$ at walmart), good shine, no work spray on your done!
armorall cons: stains driveway, lasts for a few days, turns sidewalla brown, only lasts 3-4 times
then i moved to meguiars high endurence tire gel the high gloss one i belive.
pros:awsome stuff!! extremly nice shine, very wet look, keeps tires looking new, dosnt crack the tire. lots and lots of uses
cons: more expensive 6-7 dollars, smells like grapes and i want to drink it
the megiures stuff is amazing!!!!!

Just make sure you don't drink and drive.
joe325i 10-17-2002, 08:45 PM hehe i wont... im not into that stuff tastes bad and im already crazy enough to have fun... lol find another 18 year old like that
but it smells sooo good!!
fragzem 03-23-2008, 11:24 AM i just use bleech white to clean tires.

Yeah that's what I have been using for years, and I use the Endurance as well. Now one might ask, "Why the hell hasn't a company came up with an applicator for tires that aren't tall as hell?!" Especially for lowered cars, I have to use a rag to apply the gel to get under the fender. The applicators are just to big for most guys running our types of setups.:help:
Boosted 04-16-2008, 01:55 AM Yah so anyone? Is there a better solution for 40 series and less profiles?
Petrucci 04-16-2008, 03:40 AM Mmmm 2002 :)
I use Surf City Beyond Tire or something like that. Autogeek sells it.
