long story short, i have a 2002, im 19 years old and i have put a fair amount of money($3k) and time(whole summer) into my car since i bought it earlier this year. Im at college 5 hours away, and im not sure what to do with my car anymore, im going to stay here awhile(roanoke college) but i rather not have my car sit at home in my garage(needs more work for me to feel safe taking it away from home). It hasn't been insuraned yet and won't be unless im living at home, which i won't be for a while....

I can't even afford my addiction to cigarettes anymore, even with a stupid campus job, what do i do with the car? hold on to it or sell it, and buy another one later? thoughts and ideas would be great, thanks

depends on the amount of rust, and its value to you.

Personally, I'd hold onto it, quit smoking, and just leave it sit in the garage... but be sure to do lots of rust prevention. Selling it would only give you a temporary fix. If you want a temporary supply of money, get a small loan from the bank/credit union.
I've currently got a very capable miata thats sitting in a garage in ohio thousands of miles away. It's not worth it for me to ship it over here ($2K), it's not worth it for me to sell since there's no way I can get back what I put into it, but it'll be there for me when I move back to the mainland.

KEEP THE CAR MAN!!!

I also go to college, and i put my 02 away in the winter. Luckily, my dad has a customer that lets us keep a lot of our toys/cars in his garage for the winter since he is never there. It helps keep my car clean(er) than if i kept it in the yard all the time.

If you sell the car, you will regret it.

Definately hold onto it, especially since you've already put so much into it and have a garage to store it in. I am in the same financial situation, but I am still keeping mine even though the restorations have not even began. Believe me, there were a few that I sold that I've kicked myself for ever since...

Your still young and at this point in your life if you need money and the '02 isnt reliable enough for you to drive far from home I would say sell it. You can always get another one when the time is right.
If you dont need the money than keep it.

I am a broke college student as well (Washington State University) and I spent pretty much all the money I had made during the summer aquiring my 02, I drove it around over here for awhile and then garaged it. If you can keep it like others have said selling it is only a temporary fix. I went the student loan route to cover for school.

man its hard to tell someone to sell their 02

What are you going to do next summer? Can you get the thing on the road for next year?

as for poor student been there man. I used to work a few shifts at the food services so I could 'borrow' a few days worth of bagels etc so I could buy beer (rather than food).

I had mine in a garage while I went back east to school and did all my training. 13 untouched years later, it's in great shape and running well. What seems expensive to a struggling student eventually becomes affordable. If you really love the car, keep it. You won't regret it. Oh yeah, and quit smoking so you can enjoy it longer.

Get a job where you get more money......server/Valet/ bartender. Your on a college campus, there has to be a need for some of those jobs there!

I feel your pain, I'm a college student to. I think the time that 02s require is even a bigger issue then the cost. As classes get harder it'll becume impossable to find time to keep it on the road and if that effects your
grades...like it did mine, its definitly not worth it. That being said my 02 is no more and it sucks!

thanks for the ideas guys...

the more i think about it, i will hold on to it, its a really solid car with not alot of big problems... and now i maybe going back home next year for school, so i will be able to get it on the road, legally at the least...
