View Full Version : M3 CSL in America??
///MDriver 08-16-2002, 11:42 PM Is this coming to America? If so, how many and at what cost?
In an unrelated question, does the M3 convertable come with the homelink buttons on the rearview mirror?
Not suppose to be coming here, SUCKS.
Kevlar 08-17-2002, 11:39 AM as of this months roundel... M3 CSL will not make it to america.
Just read in a British car mag that it may cost 50,000 pounds!!! Thats about $100,000!!! and it doesn't have the carbon fiber roof and won't be 400lbs ligher like the concept car.
Ben FR 08-18-2002, 11:42 AM I look at the M3 CSL like this. It's going to cost a lot more than a a regular M3, and the performance upgrades aren't worth it. BMW only managed to cut 200 lbs from the CSL, and the upgrade in HP is minimal. I'd prefer a used 993tt at the price.

///MDriver 08-18-2002, 02:46 PM I think that the CSL could have lost more weight. 50,000 pounds is more like 60-70k. Still, I do not think it would make it to america because the front Carbon Fiber bumpers would never pass the 5 mph crash tests. Also, the fact that it is SMGII only cancels any hope that I would have of buying one.
jblack 08-18-2002, 02:51 PM As of today, 50,000 Pounds is $76,231.13
///MDriver 08-18-2002, 02:56 PM Thanks, but why does a stripped car cost more???
jblack 08-18-2002, 02:59 PM Two words.... Carbon Fiber
It's not really stripped - it has lighter seats, and lighter body panels, among many other things (non-automatic cliamte control...etc, etc). I think it goes by the "triple constraint" - Light, Strong and Cheap: you can pick two.
///MDriver 08-18-2002, 03:10 PM Well, it has no radio, no A/C. I think that it shoudl cost less, if they really want to sell some, but then again they sold plenty of Cobra Rs.
jblack 08-18-2002, 03:21 PM I don't think they will have much trouble moving them. But, they did have trouble moving the E36 M3 LTW's - some stood on the showroom floors for a long time. It is dificult explaining to an American why his $75,000 BMW has no A/C, tunes and Sunroof!
I don't think BMW expects to sell many - and I don't think they will bring them here.
///MDriver 08-18-2002, 10:15 PM If they brought them here I would be on the list for one, but I am considering a Cobra R. Any opinions???
jblack 08-18-2002, 10:18 PM Have you driven one? I hear it's like driving a jackhammer when compared to an M3 - lots of power, but pretty crude in it's delivery. From looking at your list of cars you own, I wouldn't think you would be comfortable in that car. You do need a car with a hard top to take to the track though.......
///MDriver 08-18-2002, 10:24 PM I dont go to the track with the exception of the 1/4 mile, though none of these have been down the strip.
I dont think i would mind the ride, besides, it wouldn't be my daily driver or anything. I am just looking for something quick to mess around wiht on the weekend. The CSL would have been perfect, though there is no way that i need SMG, even though it may be the best thing since sliced bread. The Cobra R is a MANUAL 6-speed, with torque and hp. Plus its stripped like the CSL, which i really like......
shahin 08-18-2002, 10:32 PM SMG is a lot better than you may think. Unfortunately you dont want to give it a try.
jblack 08-18-2002, 10:34 PM To each his own - I have the SMG, and still am trying to decide if it is the worlds best thing. It is nice on the track - when you figure out you are in the wrong gear in the middle of a turn, you can just grab the paddle, and boom, there you go. No way can you do that with a 6 speed - too much stuff going on in a turn to downshift, turn and not upset the car.
You should try one of those driving school/track events. Most fun a guy can have with his clothes on!
If you are looking for fast and bang for buck, the Cobra R is very dificult to beat!
///MDriver 08-18-2002, 10:37 PM I have no problem with the SMG, only when it cuts into them wanting to build stick models. I am afraid that BMW will consider the SMG the next stick, and i am upset with that. However, i would probably like it, but i cannot see spending $2400. But hey, thats why it is and SHOULD BE an option.
They may make it the next auto but not the next stick.
and remember that F1 is full auto for most drivers now.
///MDriver 08-19-2002, 06:27 PM I truly hope that it is not the next manual. I will have no problem if it is the next auto.
