View Full Version : Amp install
Evill1 10-24-2005, 05:41 PM I am adding (or want to) a second amp in my car but 2 things.
1) Most places here are scared to touch the car.
2) I want to keep the stock HU.
SO:
I am going to do a line out from the rear deck (HK) speakers to the amp RCA's, but I need to know if there is a place in the trunk that I can connect my remote wire to turn on the amp...??? :help

The Beastmaster 10-24-2005, 06:16 PM Use your power antenna lead. :D
Evill1 10-24-2005, 06:17 PM Great!! we are on to something here!!! SERIOUSLY!!!
Thats what I keep in hearing!
Where is it? what does it look like?
The Beastmaster 10-24-2005, 06:38 PM Since BMW uses head units from other manufacturers, there may be a power antenna lead on the back of the deck. It is usually yellow and has a label on it.
Evill1 10-24-2005, 06:50 PM Thanks, I really don't want to go anywhere near the deck, I would like to keep this install in the trunk, but at last resort I will go to the HU

I am assuming these are the same wires/colors that are hooked up to the amp in the trunk?

thrlls 10-24-2005, 10:32 PM Did you try going to Certified Sounds?
PH# 841-9077
Addy 1095 Dillingham Blvd I-2, Hon. Hi.
Location is across HCC just after the Kapalama canal.
I never did use them, but I did see them installing some sound systems in a car while I was there getting a quote for window tints.
808323I 10-25-2005, 01:27 AM My friend got his sounds installed at Nu Image in Waipahu!
He did the works Deck, Amp, Subs, Mids and Highs, Separates.
They did a good job the guy there isn't scared to go at it.
The only thing I didn't like was the dash kit it is off centered.
They said thats how all the dash kits are for Bimmers.
Easy,
Shane

This is the easy thing to do... just replace everything because they cannot deal with the BMW system. Not knocking them but the radios already come with pre outs and there are wiring kits so it is basically plug and play. I just wanted to keep the stock look and hide everything. I did the ipod interface today off the cd changer output so I will figure out the rest during the week.
dirsh 10-25-2005, 08:58 AM If you use the power antenna lead then the amp will only turn on when the radio is on. If you only want to listen to the radio then that is OK. If not I would suggest hooking up a remote wire to the fuse box on a connection that is hot when the ignition is on..
Evill1 10-25-2005, 02:39 PM Now that is thinking outside the box!

If you're listening to a CD. I don't listen to the radio

Wouldn't the head unit have to be on? I think the power antenna lead has power as soon as the head unit is powered up.
Evill1 10-26-2005, 02:58 PM Very true if you are listening to CD/MP3 or what ever you have. In MOST cases the head unit has to be on. Unless you are one of those strange people with headphones on in the car...
Well anyways, If anyone wants a short version.
The amp is turned on when the H/U is turned on.
1) By doing this you will need to locate the unbraided white wire on the amp input wiring harness.
2) I am have the HK upgrade :rolleyes so I tapped my subs to the 2 extra rear speakers so I can turn them on and off as I please.
The subs hit a lot harder than I would like but I ran the amp remote wire along my ipod connection (RCA adapter and Mbus to the factory cd changer out).
If any of you know anyone that is selling an LCD screen pls let me know 6/7inch. This is my next weekend project.
Anyone know where I can buy fiberglass mix?

No
The power antenna lead is to "power the antenna" when the radio is on. It is not on when the CD player is playing.
