I ended hitting 225 KPM (135 MPH) and then it cut off on me. I didn't push after, was a bit nervous, Anyway, whats the deal, I though The limiter cuts it off at 155 MPH. Not that I care so much, not planning on traveling that fast any time soon, but still kind of curious.

Is this correct on a 02 540i Auto, sport pkg. ?

I've found it varies from country to country. In the US, the limiter is set to 127 or so. I think in germany and other countries, it is set about 10 mph higher. If you want to go faster, get sharked.

Make sure you get some tires rated that high, too (if your's aren't). Ive seen videos of tires coming apart at 150+, someone ALWAYS get's hurt.

Mine has Dinan engine software, but I was able to take mine to 150 easily (but I slowed down...didn't want to go 150+ through an intersection)

on my car in the navi display it says 186mph...as limit whats that all about?

e39 540 limit is 155 I know for the manual and I cant imagine why it would be different for the auto.

ive hit a little above 150 in my 97 540 auto. had more in it, but it wasnt a road that was meant for that kind of driving, so i'd say my auto would probably hit the 155 limiter.

I had mine up to I dont exactly what but it was a pretty scary speed.
speedometer arrow went well over 140 mark. I believe I was doing 155-165.
I have a 00 540i manual. I bought my car used and I am not sure why it doesnot have the governor.

One dude says 127, and another guy is certain its 155 lol.

this one claims 155, 128 without the sport package on the 03, dont know if it mattered on previous years, as mine is a 97 and i dont think it is a sport package.

so i'd say 155 until they brought it down for non sport packages

I can attest my 97 DINAN 5 has been 165-168 one time. :devillook (at a closed course of course).

if DINAN could do it means that physically E39 is capable of achieving that speed. if we take max rpm 6500 and gear ratios. also guys remember that
all E39s have 282 horsepower but ones with double VANOS (TU engine)
produce 282 horsepower at lower rpms.

Once I had a rented 1994 F-348 Ferrari doing 168 mph. fifth gear, floored the gas pedal and thats all it could do, 168. so cheers guys, E39 bimmer is a super car disguised as a family sedan.

I didn't run up to the speed limiter on my car yet, but with my GPS, the speed meter is about 14% faster than real speed. FYR only!

06 330 & 530i's have 255hp

I've taken my stock 540/6 up to 155mph.

me too- many, many times.........

98 540i6 bone stock and no cdv

I topped it at about 220kph...this is the 525i though...so most understandable that she would not go faster than that - i got the feeling that except for some engine management system "Angel" probably would go a little faster though ;) no way to confirm or deny that

our 99 528 hit the wall at 128 (claculated, speedo said 134 or so)

my Z3 read dead nuts on 128 when the limiter came on.
