i just won that, going to pick it up next week and start tearing cleaning degreasing and rebuilding for after winter early spring. anyone think it was a bad choice?,
anyone know where i can get a cheap management system, or a turbo exaust manifold for cheap (used would be good as well).
thanx toots.:redspot
my plans are..
-De Grease the hell out of it.
-clean it up, very little surface rust on cylinders.?
-change the cracnk main bearings and the piston rod bearings.
-new seals
-fairly larger pistons,
-maaaaaybe go with some better cams>?
i want to rebuild it all motor to transplant when we start getting nicer weather. and then maybe if i fall around to it, build up the rest of the turbo parts..ex the turbo exaust manifold, make the oil tap etc etc. yada yada..anyways..
hope to see you at next seasons auto x (GJ). i dont mean to be a pain in the ass but, i will be asking some questions during the build, so please dont yell at me?. haha well you can but i wont get mad. thanx guys.

Sounds good, this would also be an opportunity to fix things up that might need to be. Post up how you like.

One big problem - building an engine for NA performance vs. forced induction performance is different - at the most base level of pistons, compression ratio and cams.

Decide now and build accordingly. Turbo CIS is easy, and Megasquirt is inexpensive. The pieces missing from that setup are significant.

I guess its a good starting point. Keep in mind the turbo will most likely need to be rebuilt, the head redone, the bottom end gone through, the flywheel resurfaced, and lots of other misc things you are going to need.

You also have to decide what class you want, turbo is going to throw you in with the big dogs.

I think CJ had a turbo kit as well, that I liked for some reason better than the one you bought. I think he was more complete or something.

The one I have is the stock BAE/RayJay kit, and yes it is complete, and in excellent condition.

This was on eBay once before. Basically, it is a M10 in need of a rebuild and then just a miss match of parts to create a turbo system. I think the price paid was fair for the parts. It’s an ambitious project but cool if you can pull it off!

what i plan on doing is building back to stock, (like i said) maybe cams pistons..nothing toooo crazy. and then later on down the line throwing the turbo in. on a scale of a 1 to 10 what do you guys think of this project?.

rate on..

difficulty 1-10
Finding parts for turbo 1-10
Parts givin to me 1-10
price 1-10

and any other subjects..

1 meaning the easiest/most amount of things and 10 meaning the hardest/least

(kind of hard to understand i know..give it a try lol) please i would really appreciate some feedback

Decide now and build accordingly.

Agreed.........

I've thought long and hard and have decided to go N/A with my rebuild.
Have even got a guy who has a few sets of S14 TB's for sale :)
We'll see how that goes!

Good Luck whatever you end up deciding to do :cool

Cheers

How difficult something is depends on you more than the job. I am doign a 16 Valve conversion on a friends Convertible VW. Easy for me, almost impossible for him.

Doing something like this if you haven't before isn't impossible, but it will take you more time, and it really helps if you have a friend that can help and keep you away from disasters.

Cost depends on a few things - how resourceful you are (how often do you scan classifieds, ebay, craigslist, salvage yards, etc) and how much of a hurry you are in. If you can wait for a good deal to fall in your lap, you can get something for a great price usually. If you need it yesterday, you are going to pay whatever price you can find.

If this is your first engine build, before you start buying any parts I would recommend reading several books. Corky Bell's turbo book is good (he is opinionated and makes lots of errors, but a great resource overall) plus some books on blue-printing and building engines. David Vizard is a great writer with lots of books out there. He can communicate it quite well. Also, a book about the M10 engine or 2002/320 in particular might help (on pistons, cam selection, etc) - not sure, I don't have one of these. Would love a recommendation from someone.

I built a 1.8 8V VW engine for my pickup when I was 19 in college while working at a VW/Porsche shop. I was dirt poor, and built it for the cost of rings, bearings, head milling and a gasket set. Got a couple bad engines for free, and disassembled them and put them together with enough good parts to make one good one. I was lucky to have been reading for a long time about it, and the owner took time to help and guide me when needed. With a flow-bench mild ported head, factory mild cam, little more compression, it would better all my friends GTI 8V engines.

My point is, it isn't impossible, but approach it slowly and deliberately, and plan it out. Asking questions on here seems like a great first step.
