Hi all, noticed a rear noise whn making sharp turns (IE u-turns or urns where the steering is almost rotated to 1 side.)

It seems to be coming from the wheels well, maybe the tires? car behaves normal, no issues with it.

Wondering if anyone has an idea of what could be causing this.

It is probably your rear diff. There is a service bulletin on the rear diff. fluid. It should sound like a grind, just take the car to the dealer and tell them and they will switch out the fluid for you.

yes sounds like a grind like tires rolling against the fenders or some like that...

thanks for the tip! ill take the car to dealer soon.

Since my '01 is out of warranty and would prefer not bring it to the dealer to have it fixed, what fluid is supposed to be in there? Anyone know? I have the lovely crunching sound coming from the rear diff and would love for it to go away!

Original fluid is SAF-XJ.
New specially formulated diff oil, BMW part number 83 22 2 282 583.
Diff fill capacity=1.2 liters (1.3 quarts)
After changing to new fluid with the vehicle at operating temp, drive in tight circles (20 circles in each direction) allowing the oil to coat the locking clutch discs.
NOTE: if you go with the special oil, you have to continue to use the same kind whenever you replace it next time.

Thanks for the great info! Mine seems to be better worse and worse every day over the past week...trying to stop it now before it gets any worse. 285 Hoosiers aren't helping the problem, I'm sure either...lol.

Thanks,
Mike

Btw, anyone run Redline 75W90 Diff oil? Any thoughts on it? That's what Turner recommends, that's why...

i use the 75w90 diff oil in my 300zx.. It works great but i was wondering the same question on this car. If you use the redline in the diff then definetly get the mt-90 tranny oil while your at it. That i would have to say is the best for your tranny and shifting issues.

I might give the diff oil a try next week.
