MAkard 10-09-2005, 10:37 PM what kind of radiator is it?
It is a Behr core that has had Aluminum tanks welded on rather than the plastic stock tanks. I was planning to install it (still new), but I got a factory Euro radiator (another row) when I got the S50B32 engine.
MAkard 10-09-2005, 10:42 PM who made the crank and rods? 3.8" whoa that is LONG!!!
Crower.
They quoted 5-6 weeks originally. Then changed to 16 weeks upon receipt of the order. They finally shipped the parts 27 MONTHS after receipt of the order (recently) after I had already put the S50B32 purchase in the works.
The parts are VERY nice. Only issue whatsoever is the fact that the crank will require the use of SAE bolts for the flywheel rather than metric OEM bolts.
Amazing how light they are considering how much longer stroke.
The pistons were designed for the longer stroke to increase dwell time at TDC.
Engineers say this is really trick setup.
NoSoup4U 10-09-2005, 11:26 PM pm'd you about the radiator mike.

The reps at the PRI show told me no problem. They do custom race work every day. Every phone call for 2 YEARS it will most likely ship next week or the next week for sure. Sort of like Free Beer Tomorrow signs at the local watering hole.
At least when they finally got here they were everything we hoped they would be. Really nice parts.
like2short 10-10-2005, 02:20 AM Marco romani had similar problems building his motor. Pistons and Rods took forever and they always sent the wrong part the first time.

Turbo331is 10-11-2005, 10:48 AM Was this built for a US spec engine? Any pictures? The reason I ask is because PTG uses a 94 or 96mm crank in the engines they built, but it was my understanding that it won't fit in a US Spec engine. On an S52, the rod big ends come pretty close to the block wall, maybe 3mm. With this crank being +6mm, I am pretty sure it would hit without doing some extensive work. So with that said, I am assuming its for a Euro engine?
With the engine complete, $20,000, how many hours was this ran? Is the price negotiable? Engine built, or is the price assuming it needs to be built? If its going to be built, who is the builder?
Last but not least, the Ti rods? Do you know the manufacture? or did Crower do them? I was quoted I think $980/rod from Crower or Pauter, not sure. I have another source that I can get 300gram Ti rods from, so my question is would it be possible if the engine hasn't been built to substitute those in if I were to ship them? What are the specs on the rods, length, design, exact grams, journals? 150grams less than stock is about 450grams, which isn't to light for a Ti rod, so thats why I am wordering all of these questions.
If you don't know, thats fine...I understand completely, just questions someone who is about to drop $20,000 on an engine would like to know!
Thanks,
Wes

Originally a US Spec engine.
Very minor additional machining to block required. I can provide more details privately with deposit.
No pictures at present time.
Engine has not been assembled.
Pro NHRA Engine Builder/Crew Chief for Matt Hartford/SUMMIT Racing Mr. Mylon Keasler / Hitch Race Engines is planned engine builder.
I have also discussed the assembly with Sunbelt Engines for additional $$$$.
Parts could be shipped to builder of your choice at reduced price.
They are Crower rods. 372 grams each according to the card. 5.400" length.
The journal sizes are not typical BMW sizes by design. We chose another size with a wide variety of bearing choices including special (alloy? hardness?) race bearings available in tighter increments than BMW bearing sizes. I can provide details concerning these sizes privately with deposit.
I said lighter than stock by mistake, but I meant lighter than some Pauter rods.
Turbo331is 10-11-2005, 07:12 PM Thanks, passing the info on! ETA on build time? I know several builders in the states are a couple months past due.

I have taken the pressure off now that I'm situated with my S50B32, but I can get the project back on the front burner when someone is serious. For now, it makes more sense for me to see if it will be parted-out or sell as a complete engine or somewhere in between.
DRC10 10-12-2005, 01:49 AM Just curious, what kind of power does something like this put out. Also do you have a dyno sheet?
MAkard 10-12-2005, 11:02 AM Just curious, what kind of power does something like this put out. Also do you have a dyno sheet?
The engine has not been built yet.
The custom tuned Aluminum intake & throttlebody, and AEM were used on an 11:1 3.2L US engine with solid lifters and smaller cams in 2004 that produced in excess of 300 rwhp for an incredibly wide rpm range up to 8500rpm.
At 12:1, with the additional displacement, greatly reduced rotating mass, tricked-out head, Sunbelt cams, and some dyno tuning to dial it all in, this engine should make serious power!
DRC10 10-12-2005, 03:36 PM Wow. Bump for some awesome parts. Someone needs to buy this.

These are absolute top quality custom goodies priced right as completely assembled engine, complete list readly for assembly, or individually. My wife says these goodies have to go to a new home soon now that I've made the switch to euro engine format.

Why did you switch??
With so many members here constantly stating that there's no point in spending the $ on a euro motor since there are so many power options for the US motor, I'm interested to know why you switched.

Probably because of the knowledge now known on the S50B32s and the type of power levels which can be achieved without spending a fortune. I believe Mike is running a similar setup to Alex Lipowich and is making some great power. It seemed like it at the Glen atleast..

Amazing results but, unfortunately for me, far from a street setup. :(
OT - Did you see my thread about the LTW carpet, Jared? If not, do you know if the LTW carpet is any different (ie. lighter) than regular production carpet?

Proven reliability and reasonable price for performance level. My S50B32 is stock from a breakyard imported by ABL ORIGINAL PARTS (Alex Lipowich) with Schrick cams (installed by Al Valenzo at Patrick BMW in Chicago, IL), carbon airbox, and some custom tuning with the OEM Siemens engine management system (both VANOS still active). It doesn't have the bottom-end grunt that the monster race engine I'm selling should have, but it is ready to go racing right now without having to wait. I've missed too many races and this just seemed like the best bang for the buck to be competitive again.

Alex hooked me up big-time! He's the man to call if you want the S50B32 goodies. The engine seemed to pull right with the big boys at WGI. Anxious to see what it will do at some tracks I've driven a lot more. Maybe I can keep Watts, Bassen, and David Daniel in sight for a change!

Do you mind telling me where you acquired the custom software for the Schrick cams? I've been searching for someone who can tune the MSS50 for over a year. :(

I don't have photos. They are stock M calipers. Perfectly clean. Now bright red with fresh rebuild. My set is in the display case at Treehouse Racing, so I can't get photos of them with ease.

I'm sorry for the delay while I was travelling to and from NHIS BMW CCA Club Race.
The stock head has been sold and shipped (list now edited).
The tricked-out head is still available, however I have been receiving some interest in the entire engine package in the $15-17k range (asking $20k obo). If you are interested in that head, it will have to wait to see what happens with the complete engine.
Still some great parts available!

The parts listed are not in use with my racecar. These are spares from when I was using an S52 powerplant instead of the S50B32 engine I'm using now. But, you are right...it is a great list of parts to build a screamer!

MAkard 02-18-2006, 12:37 AM I'm interested in the S52 head, if you still have it. What does it need?
The full race head needs nothing, but is still on "hold" for interested parties buying the entire engine. Willing to consider selling if I don't get a deposit within next few days.
Stock head needs valve job and replacing of some bent exhaust valves. No damage to head. Has not been machined previously, so it can still be used in Prepared class cars since it can stay within factory rebuild spec limits.

newjersm3 03-13-2006, 06:11 PM would the s52 lightend crank be able to just be put in a s52 motor or would there be more that would have to be done? can it be run with a supercharger , lightweight flywheel, and underdrive pulleys? i have all. and about how much does a stock crank way? will this make a real big difference? thanks Brian
stevenoid 03-15-2006, 06:50 PM I might be interested in the crank and rods, but have some questions regarding the sanity of what I'm thinking of doing. I want to build a monster sleeper street car/daily driver (91 octane, stock exhaust). I'm quite comfortable installing bolt-ons, but I haven't worked with internals since I was a teenager (20+ years ago), so excuse me if I show a bit of ignorance.
I was thinking of using the crank and rod set (since I need to have some bottom-end work done anyway) mostly for the increase in displacement and the decrease in weight. Will the rods attach to readily available aftermarket pistons? -- Pistons that will get my compression ratio down enough for pump gas and a supercharger (~8psi)?
Also, assuming proper maintenance, would you expect the crank and rod set to have at least reasonable longevity (100K miles) in this kind of application?

Yes. JE and others will supply what you need.
Yes. Lighter and stronger than stock should result in long life assuming proper assembly, use, maintenance, etc.
There is no better setup available for US engines!

BeirBrennerE30 06-09-2006, 11:16 AM what is max rpm with that long of a stroke??

In testing, we were twisting it 8500 rpm with a vastly improved valvetrain, intake, and head porting. Those lightweight Ti rods and lightweight pistons enable some significant rpm improvements when properly balanced.
No, the euro pan will not fit to put the S50B32 into an e30. We had to use the pan and pickup from an 525. Bolts right on and because it is front sump rather than rear sump (like the e36) it does not require any special baffles to prevent oil starvation issues.
BeirBrennerE30 06-09-2006, 11:31 AM wow quick reply... 8500 rpm in an 3.4L is tempting but like you i was thinking of ditching the us e36 motor in my e30 for the euro counterpart
any more pics of your car?? looks great in your sig

Just happened to be on-line when I saw your post.
It was pretty sweet power too. The main reason I switched to euro will show up soon. I wanted to de-stroke the euro to go racing in DM at similar power to what I've been seeing from most folks in CM. I'm building another lighterweight e30 chassis right now for use with my new 2974cc dual VANOS euro motor variant that should be in the car in time for O'fest (knock on wood).
May issue of Roundel shows the car pre-widebody kit.
Thanks!
like2short 06-09-2006, 12:47 PM Does the stock S50B30 (Euro 3.0L) crank have sufficient rod journal material to offset grind to a shorter stroke? Or do you need to get a custom crank?
I've noticed that the rod journal on the S50B30 is very "beefy" at 50mm diameter compared to 49mm of the S50B32 and S54. "Regular" BMW 6 cylinders have 45mm rod journal diameters.
Seems like there is plenty of material to do the offset grind, but I don't know about special surface treatings or coatings that might need to be done.

Yes, mine has been offset ground to meet the very minimal requirement to get below the Zilinsky rule 2980cc. Very simple machine work. Still using OEM bearing set (smaller size now of course). Anxious to see how she does.

Are you using the Euro 3.0 rod undersize bearings? they come in 49.5mm, and 49.75mm (IIRC) or did you move to euro 3.2L bearing, 49.0mm, 48.75mm or 48.5mm?
What did you chose for rods?
I had this destroke idea for awhile, good to see somebody is doing it. I figure even if you just use stock cams, and stock compression and use stock programming you should be able to make 255-260 rwhp quite easily, which is right up there with a lot of good S14s and have more reliablity and torque and all you need is an offset grind and some custom pistons
And of course, change the cams, raise the compression use a bigger plenum, custom programming and bingo you can have a 380 - 400 hp engine.

ABL Original Parts...Alex...is providing the engine for me. I'm sure Al Valenzo at Patrick BMW can get the job done on the assembly. It has higher compression, coated, lightweight pistons, some good rods, I don't know which rod bearing size, Schrick cams, Carbon plenum, dual VANOS, and custom tuning. Should make a few ponies in DM. We'll soon see. :)

FWIW: using the BMW GrpA Cams, big air plenum, special Bosch HFM (that is NLA, but looks like Jack Money has one), stock ecu, but with different software for engine and VANOS....the 3.0L produced around 380 hp. I think with alpha N you could see 400hp out of the 3.0L.

If you made that kinda power, the issues will start becoming, close ratio gearing. The GrpA cars used Hollinger boxes, and of course the bottom end issue we're seeing could become an issue, but with a shorter stroke might be ok.
BTW if you go with single vanos and the stock ecus, I have the GrpA code for the ECU and the VANOS, that could help you "baseline" the mapping.

Thanks, but we're planning to use the dual VANOS head from my current CM engine with all its goodies and custom tuning of the Siemens ECU. However, I'm also planning a rebuild of the bottom-end of my CM engine with install of the single VANOS head with all its goodies, a Carbon plenum, some hot cams, etc for a solid back-up engine should I need to go playing around in CM anytime soon. Valenzo tells me that I have virtually everything I need to duplicate the setup that Larry Wright used (then Jack Money's car) in the past in the spare parts bin...so we thought that might be worth doing. He says he still has access to chip(s) etc to make it good to go in short order. Who knows, I might just slap it in a sleeper 318ti and go picking on kids around town. Many of them don't yet know to BEWARE anytime a grand dad wants to race their rice rocket!
like2short 06-10-2006, 08:51 PM sounds like a good plan...use dual vanos on the smaller engine where torque is going to be more of an issue than on the big motor.
how about putting the big motor in a E34 wagon for a real sleeper.
