View Full Version : HELP! Just found window open! Is my interior ruined?!
99E36M 10-08-2005, 11:47 AM I'm shaking right now I'm so upset. I just looked out my window to gaze at my newly aquired M3 and I noticed the window tint didn't seem as dark...well that's because the window was OPEN! It has been raining here since last night! The passenger seat, door panel, and front and rear floor is SOAKED! I don't know what to do!
I just towel dried the interior. The leather is very soft and wet feeling. The rugs are just a very wet f*&^ing mess. What can I do to save my brand new car?!
themadhatter 10-08-2005, 12:43 PM go buy a bottle of febreeze and unload it in the car. your car is going to stink like a flood damaged wreck if you don't.
get a hair dryer to dry the carpet and mats.
the seat leather will surive, just treat them with a conditioner to prevent rot and the foam of the seats will need to air dry.
the door should be ok, just follow the same treatment as the seats.

do exactly as he said, and when it gets sunny again, leave ur car outside all day with all the windows or preferably doors open to let it air dry on its own...you can also get a wet/dry vaccuum to suck most of the water from the carpet. Good Luck, its not as bad as u might think, though i'd be pissed too ;)
Steve530 10-08-2005, 01:48 PM I have an alternate plan for you. Take it to a pro detailer and have them work on it.
At least, try to find someone with a wet/dry vacuum to remove as much water as possible.

Well luckily I have manual vaders...but I'm nervous about the window motor and door speakers.
I dried as much water as I could with towels. I used a hair dryer to attempt to dry the carpets, and I put a good amount of leather conditioner on the seat. When I first lifted up the rear carpet it was very wet, but when I was done it was much much better.
I ran the AC for awhile and drove around. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed the leather doesn't start to harden....
Robert 10-08-2005, 07:51 PM I doubt much water could get into the window motor, its closed up pretty good. I would be worried about the speakers if they are paper. If they have a silicone touch to them, they are fine.. Pop off your door panel and use hair dryer to really dry out the doors.. I wouldn't be worried about alot of water still in the doors as the doors have drain holes at the bottom..
Don't feel bad, crap happens. I rather have your problem anyday than get my car totally flooded in the streets during a hurricane..
Roffle Waffle 10-09-2005, 07:28 PM your speakers will take the most damage
themadhatter 10-09-2005, 07:29 PM no loss there, the factory nokia speakers sucked anyways.
332 RustBucket 10-12-2005, 12:30 PM If I were you I would look at lifting the carpet up and letting it dry out. You can remove the side door sills and then let the suckka dry.
JeffBlue 10-12-2005, 12:57 PM You can leave a 1/2 in crack on your window when you park. This helps the moisture evaporating and making the interior smell. Rain water is like distilled water. It would only start smelling if it starts growing mold or bacteria. You can also get a couple of paper bags and fill it with charcoal and leave it in the floor of the backseat. This will help absorb moisture. I would just wet vac it and let it dry on its own. Keeping windows rolled down in your garage would help a lot. Shutting all the windows will make it start to smell. as far as the switches and motors, I haven't had any problems with these on the controls being wet. Maybe I was just lucky.
Don Nguyen 10-12-2005, 02:42 PM Any updates on this? Did you get all the water out?

Thanks for asking. I did, I think. I was driven to remove the seat, and I'm glad I did! I thought all was fairly dry...boy was I wrong! After I got the seat out I discovered how much foam BMW uses under the carpet!!! Holly hell! Some spots have 3"-4" of foam! And it is like a sponge! I spent many hours wringing out the foam and letting a hair dryer run under there. The door panel and arm rest was fairly wet too. I also found the BMW choose the same foam for the seats....yay for me:( That wasn't as easy. The seat sat in the basement (quite dry for a basement) for a week and it was still kinda wet. I did my best but I didn't want to pull the seat apart. It has been back together for a week and I don't smell anything...I'm crossing my fingers. I spent a lot of time drying with a towel then putting coat after coat of leather conditioner on. After using cream three times I still had the leather getting hard once back in the car, but I hit it with a spray on product and it seems to have softened up a lot. This certainly wasn't the best case scenario for my brand new (to me) BMW but it could have been worse.
Oh and I don't have stock speakers...not be far. The PO installed three ways...but they have high quality rubber surrounds and metal drivers, I think I'm ok.
