would this be worth paying over kbb for..?
it has ~120k [mainland] miles.
and someone has already offered him $11k.
it has a decent list of mods, too.

:dunno

i think this was in the buy & sell a while back.

Personally, I wouldn't pay over book, but then again, I am poor :( and on the bottom end of the financial spectrum of this board.

In any event, when I was faced with a similar dillema as yours, I looked at the cost and value of the vehicle from the standpoint of if I had to liquidate it immediately, would I be able to strip off the mods sell the mods, then sell the car and be somewhere in the ballpark of what I put out in the first place to purchase it? This will give you a worse case scenario value. In my case the answer was "ahh sort of" or for the most part yes, then the emotion-factor overrode everything and closed the deal for me....so much for careful cost analysis.

You know the general rule with mods is that you don't make back the full cost and only realize/recoup a fraction of the cost. Maybe the seller is attempting to recoup most of the mods cost and it results in the cost being higher than book? Maybe it would be a good idea to cost out the mods and add it to a base kbb value and see whether the asking price is fair or not...

Of course you know the other factors:
Maintenance records
Abundance/Availability of '95 M3s
and the overring Emotional Factor - ugh!! Keep this factor in check.

Good luck!

good points.

i am almost tempted to jump on this..
just because e36 m3's are kind of hard to come by.
dennis from bme just sold his pristine '98 for $18k.
i wish i jumped on that :(
but at that time, i wasn't ready to buy.
i know ja///mnn just sold his for a very good price.
but at that time..
i actually had my sights set on a g35.
i wish i jumped on that, too.

this car is very tempting.
high kbb is $11k.
the seller basically said make him an offer.
someone already offered him $11k.
which i guess is a good price with the mods.
i'm not sure i want to pay $12k for it..
considering it has ~120k miles on it.
but i want an e36 m3 so bad.
what to do, what to do..

have you actually gone to see the car?

I can't stand sellers that wait around for weeks looking for a best offer. if they don't give me a price, I'm gone. I know what its like to find a car and really want to just buy it, believe me, in the past 3 years I've probably bought and sold about 10 cars.

To me, an E36 M3 is neither a rare or a hard to find car. They come up relatively often, unless this one is perfect for you I'd pass and wait for the right one. Use the time to make sure when the right car comes you have the cash you need in hand.

Sup C,
I've talked to the owner and seen the car in person. If you haven't seen the car, from what I remember, there is rust on the upper corner part of the windshield, driver's side.

Just take your time in finding the right M3 for you. I just did that when I found the right M3 for me. It was harder for me to find the right M3 is because I wanted a 4 door model with a stick. :)

This says it all...time to move on with the hunt for the next E36 M3.
Even without the rust, I wouldn't pay 11k! There are many E36 M3s for sale on the mainland, and the cost to ship them here are not that high. The benny here is, you get what you really want.

Actually rust was on the passenger side but I fixed it after I bought it from the previous owner. I didn't say I was selling it for $11k I just stated that I might potentially sell my car and someone offered me $11. Well thanks anyways for the interest guys.
