View Full Version : Valve cover gasket done at Knightwerkes
Astroboy 10-06-2005, 04:19 PM Since there's been some off and on discussion about reputable and reasonable independents, I just thought I'd post the cost breakdown for a valve cover gasket replacement and REPAIR work done yesterday at Knightwerkes. IMO, the job was very reasonable and fair. You know when you talk to Tim that he is very honest, reliable and will back up his work.
The e34 is known for crappy valve cover paint and what happens is the paint peels over the top and around the gasket area. Once it starts peeling, the oil tends to leak out from there. Tim's work wasn't the normal replacement of gasket. It included cleaning and repainting the valve cover and cleaning the spark plug well areas that were saturated with oil.
Valve gasket set $48
Spark plugs $39
Labor to R & R ignitors, valve cover, spark plugs & gasket plugs $175
Total $262
Hope that helps some of you.

Whoa, that is NICE! Is that a straight polish job or did you get it coated? From what I gather from the thread, it sounded like it was a straight strip and polish, but it looks like it is chrome plated or something to that effect...Very nice.

BMW brakes are easier than a Las Vegas hooker.

stripped the old paint, repainted the whole thing except the vanos portion. that part was hand polished. that's bare aluminum, no chrome to be found :D
98M3_4 10-07-2005, 03:29 AM Desombob, Valve cover looks great!
Thanks for the write-up Astro, looks like I'll be taking my car there for future work.
mellowMpowered 10-07-2005, 04:14 PM desmobob,
how long did it take you to polish?
what grit sandpapers did you use?

D,
I'm not sure if Tim has all the high-tech electronic analysis stuff. You may need to check first. If it's mechanical, I would think he wouldn't have any problem being able to do it. If it's an electronic problem, you may need to check with him. My car is an earlier generation car so it is no problem for him; your car is much newer.:cool

set aside at least a day. 90% of the work is prepping (stripping, sanding).
the rest of the time just depends on how long it takes for the paint to dry.
warning:
if you do polish it, you will have to do "maintenance polishing" every week with mother's, or it will slowly lose its luster. be sure you want to devote time to do that. :embarrasm
