View Full Version : H&R Springs??
I've read the threads on the M3 boards but I want to know what you guys think...I have a set of H&R springs for my M3, should I install them? Anyone know how much stiffer is the ride going to be? Keep in mind that I like the stock set-up but would like the car to be a bit lower.
IslandS62 10-05-2005, 10:35 PM This might be MCoupe specific, but the H&Rs are STIFF. I used them for a while with the stock shocks, and I thought the car felt terrible. The rear end was all over the place and the car rode poorly. It was low though.
Later I added Bilstien Sports, and while it handles much better, the ride is much harsher than stock (as was made clear when I went for a ride in my stock 2002 Coupe)...this sort of solidified my desire to install Konis and Eibachs when it comes time to do the gray Coupe's suspension.
YMMV
K Funk 10-06-2005, 12:13 AM Did you find a good source locally? as I just made a thread below...... I need some H&Rs for my 2002. Not too many other options, but I'm also considering B&Gs for a bigger drop. Ride comfort be damned. :buttrock
The cheapest option I've found for H&Rs is from optionimport.com for $180 plus shipping.
thrlls 10-06-2005, 12:13 AM I have H&R/Bilsteins on my Roadster & 318is. The cars are much lower then stock, and much stiffer IMO.
Look around, I think there are springs that will lower the car, but not give such a stiff/harsh ride.
I like the NHV the springs give me, as I use it as part of my weight loss program!:D

By the way, I still really wanna take ya up on the offer for the use of the vice, just things keep coming up.
This weekend I gotta change the timing belt on my roommate's corolla.
But I got till Oct. 11th for the next AX...
If ya need a hand with installing the springs, I can drop by and help ya out and then do the driveshaft on my car. This weekend might be busy tho, as I got t-belt thing and a going away party for a friend.

From what I have found only the Eibachs are designed to work with the stock shocks, so going to the H&R's you are going to get new shocks as well. I have a set of Eibachs that I am going to be installing tomorrow along with the H&R front sway bar. I will give you a full report of the ride this weekend.
CobaltFire 10-06-2005, 12:46 AM Oct. 11 is the next Auto-X? Or is that some kind of deadline day? How do I get in on that, BTW? I had a blast at the A500, and now I want to start doing Auto-X, too. :)

Tom just show up before 0800. You will have to in-process and it may take a little longer for you since this will be your first autox.
My recommendation would be to give yourself plenty of time before the 0800 start time so you can get somewhat adjusted to whats going on in addition to the sometimes long check in line.
There are all sorts of people and cars there, your car will be a minority... and so will you!!:D But thats par for the course almost anywhere though.
Lots of good people to get to know, and there is lots to know too! Its typically a long, hot day so go prepared.
CobaltFire 10-06-2005, 01:51 AM The reason I asked about oct 11 is because that is a weekday. Is it really on a weekday? But thanks for the info! Will you be out there? Would be great to see another 5er out there!
808323I 10-06-2005, 02:12 AM I have H&Rs installed in my 323. Personally I like the ride and height!:D
Got them at Nu Image Wahiawa installed for 400.
Easy,
Shane

H&Rs will probably overwhelm the stock shocks, but they are reportedly great when paired with a set of Konis. I would avoid a Bilstein Sport/H&R Sports combination...I ran this set up for a couple of years and it is pretty uncomfortable on some of our rougher roads.

all you had to do was use the bf.c "search" feature...:D
H&R sport or race? I had both.
H&R race-Very low. I first had the race springs with stock shocks, struts. They were horrible. Very bouncy. You feel every bump in he road. Then got a set of Bilsteins when the stockies bottomed out. Better and smoother ride, but still low. I got tired of the slammed look. Sold the set to Donovan aka Topspin.
H&R sport-Nice lowered height. Got these from Gene V for a very good price along with a set of Bilsteins. Better ride quality than the race coils. Not stiff at all. Better than race, imo.

Yea, what's up w/ that?:confused
Haha, Hi Gene!:)

sell the springs and buy a complete h&r coil overs you won't regret it.
I got h&r coil overs on my car and I really like the ride.

ah crap, I meant November 11th, not October 11th. But then I still would've been wrong. :(
Yes, November 13th. Still a long ways away, so I got time to do what I want first. Come on down and run!
CobaltFire 10-06-2005, 04:21 AM Hopefully I can get my new brakes installed by then, otherwise I'm not gonna run. I had 20% on the rear pads before the A500, and I wasn't easy on them there... My time to install right now is limited by 2 special order parts: my rotors (should be shipping this week), and my brake pads (have to be made by cobalt, said 2 weeks).
EDIT: After reading the rules, it seems that I will be in SP for the most part, though I am unsure on if my brakes will take me into the next level...

Just don't say anything. ;)
K Funk 10-06-2005, 05:37 AM people only question your class once you start beating them.... don't worry, it'll take ya a little while before that becomes an issue. :)

i'll second that.
i got h&r c/o's, too.
love it.
imo, they are "sporty".
not too stiff to the point driving becomes a hairy ordeal.
and no ghetto bounce.
808Cardinal87 10-06-2005, 02:12 PM If you want co's I would go with Ground Control. Great guys to deal with, superb customer service, and they know what they are doing.

Hey, no problem. I understand. Just give me a call whenever you want to use the vise. As for the springs, I still don't know if i should do it. I still have to put my CSL brakes on.
Thanks for all the advice. They are a set of sports, not race. Seems the majority feels they are too stiff for our roads. Guess I'll wait a little while more.
808Cardinal87 10-06-2005, 05:13 PM My $.02, I have H&R sports with Bilsteins and have been very happy with them, don't think they are too harsh.

I guess the older you get (my case), the less you can tolerate...:stickoutt
