View Full Version : bored throttle bodie
e21bimmer 10-05-2005, 09:21 PM anyone on here have a bored t/b? i was thinking of getting mine bored out, how do they do this? can it be done to the t/b of the 2.0? or is there one i can buy, and if i do get it bored out what mm should i get it bored out to?
greggearhead 10-05-2005, 11:00 PM I think a better quesion is - What is the weakest link/biggest cork in the intake setup? On early CIS VWs it is the airbox. Anyone know on the M10 E21?
blitzed310 10-05-2005, 11:06 PM Im pretty sure its the 9 bends or so it has to go through until it hits the TB. I've heard of people using MB/VW/Audi TB's.
DJProfessor 10-06-2005, 09:31 AM the audi ones would be the ones to get. the vw ones are a primary/secondary staggered setup and you don't want that crap. we use to grab up the audi 4000 throttle bodies for our 8v's........now i don't know if it will fit a BMW mani.......i may have a vw throttle body sitting around that i could test fit.........and logic dictates: if the vw one fits the bmw mani, then the audi one will fit the bmw mani........
greggearhead 10-06-2005, 10:07 AM Couple things - I asked what the restriction was, because having spent a lot of time on the flow bench, and testing all kinds of throttle bodies on VW setups, I know that putting a larger throttle body on when there is another restriction won't do any good at all.
Also, Audi & VW throttle bodies are both primary/secondary progressive - most VWs after 1985 came with the "larger" Audi 5 cyl sized throttle bodies anyway.
I am 99% sure it won't fit on the BMW, as it is a rectangular pattern, where the BMW looks to be an almost perfect square pattern.
Has anyone done any flow bench work on the M10 CIS intake system?

you are 100% incorrect on that first part..... the VW CIS cars (8v's) are the four bolt pattern as is the audi 4000. the audi 5 cyl is the three bolt pattern however. and the 85' year vw's didn't come with the audi throttle body. the vw CIS cars used a primary and secondary plentum always. the audi 4000 used just one (big) throttle plate instead of two. now one of our "cheap" upgrades was to steal the throttle body off the later model vw motronic cars, still a primary/secondary setup, but bigger than the CIS ones.........i have more than dabbled in vw's and with this mod so i got to know my way around it. :buttrock
however you are 100% right on the last part.......so that answers that, the vw ones will not work.

Um, you could not be more wrong.
4 & 5 cyl VW & Audis use the same bolt pattern throttle bodies. The later 4 & 5 cyl throttle bodies are the larger size. The Audi 5 cyl throttle bodies are NOT 3 bolt. Some of the Audi later 5 cyl Turbo throttle bodies are singles, but not NA 5 cyls. And that is what wewere talking about (I assume).
VW 8V & 16V & G60 throttle bodies all have the same bolt pattern as well, same as early Audi 5000 turbo TBs.
I have a box of VW & Audi throttle bodies in the garage, as well as a late 5 cyl intake and throttle body, as well as an ITB setup for 16V,etc etc etc.
I have flowed Neuspeed, Weber, Solex, early & late VW, Audi, etc TBs on the flow bench. I have worked in a VW Audi Porsche shop through college, I have built and raced VWs - on twisty tracks and on the salt, I have parted out approx 20+ VWs & Audis in the last 4 years, and done countless engine swaps, fuel injection swaps, etc etc etc. The 1990 Audi 80 3A engine in my Dasher - progressive throttle body with the rectangular bolt pattern. The Passat 2.0 16V engine in my pickup - progressive TB same pattern. The 5 cyl Quantum Syncro parked in back - progressive TB, same pattern. You get the idea.
I don't like puffing up my chest, but being that this has been how I make my living for the past 15ish years, I know what I am talking about.

that's all well and good, and i was wrong on one part and right on others, so be it. only human. but i do know that there are those audi single set ups that are the four bolt pattern that people would run. i was always told (and let to believe) that they came off the audi 4000 motor. now if this isn't the right source and those others were wrong, so be it.
