I read through the rules, and it looks like I'm legal in SM?

can some one clarify this.

Car: E36 325is (D stock)
M3 Cams (bumped to SM)
from the rear seats back completely removed (including rear deck, tools, insulation etc.) allowed in SM? if not where does this class my car?
removed door panels, removed glov box, possible remove airbags. no carpet.
x-brace - allowed in SM right?
everything else I know is legal in SM/SP.

I might be heading down to Topeka next year for some fun. that's of course after I get owned at the Canadian Nationals... I mean when I own at natio..n.a..ls :alright ;)

Interior.

And why do people give a shit about PAX? It's a useless system.

Nope. F Prepared

isn't my car classed as DS (unmodified), and if I remove the interior I get placed in F preppared.. uh. ok, can you explain or point it out in the rule book?

Prepared classes do not follow the street classification.
http://www.scca.com/_filelibrary/File/2005SoloRules.pdf

I would look at putting parts back on your car and/or removing some and shoot for DSP. FP is a tough class for a "streetable car" and SM will destroy you on the National level (ask me how I know).

ok, thanks. unfortunately my car is prepped for the Canadian Rule book, I could still put stuff back in if I'm heading down to Topeka next year and still compete in SM. this would be the best I can do, because of the cams.

Yeah, the cams are a killer. If you are going to try SM at Nationals, you had better toss in a Twinscrew, 285+ V710's & put your car on a diet or don't plan on getting anywhere near the trophies. I drove a BSP[+] car in SM for the last two years at Nationals and have been completely spanked both times.

if can't pull the cams, you're correct best you get "down" to is street modified. it's a fun class, so come on down! :D

as for competitiveness on a national-level
we went with a basically BSP+ car in 04 and got 5th and 11th.
we went with a lighter car in basically superlight DSP+ trim in 05 and got 14th and 17th.

driving had a lot to do with this (both for good and bad), but in both cases, it was a knife to a gunfight. class is evolving fast.

that said, i think the fast dsp and bsp guys would have easily trophied with their cars in sm, so driving like senna is also good.

Hey Ryan. What's up Bizzaach? Glad you chimed in here. But I can't agree with the whole DSP woulda troph'ed deal. Vic drove a DSP car his last run and sucked. Bob drove the "Daddy-O-mobile" and didn't adapt well either. This is a HIGHLY MODDED M3 CLASS for the time being. Besides, this gentleman is NOT in a Evo III with shit-loads of boost (to the moon Alice). He is in an underpowered (for the class) 325is. Trophy = skill + car. <= Period.

BTW: I have taken my personal car down from SM (it was actually a BSP car) to STU for next season. I was only running SM to have fun with my "buds" here locally. Screw that. I don't have the $$$$ to compete in SM & don't like being a loser........

what's been up jason. hope things are good down there in the M\\\ID\\\W3STSIDE.. or would that be GULFSIDE? i dunno anymore... :D

dsp ran i think within a tenth of fp on the south course. ben ran a time that would have been 2nd fastest in sm on the south i think. granted they had some major rubber laid down there, but those dsp guys know how to flog a car!

it's takes a bit to adapt to an evo from an m3. the m3 slaloms like it doesn't care but the evo just has gobs of grip everywhere and you can take it sooo much deeper into places. i drove my friend's evo in stu at the tour here in seattle and while good enough for a 2nd place trophy in stu, it was like on total 3 seconds off the car owners pace! i think bob and vic did fine jumping in those cars on 3rd runs.

but seriously if you look at the numbers both lee piccone (bsp) and a good number of the dsp guys would have trophied very high in sm this year. there is still a pretty large gap between being able to trophy and being at the top of sm. not only from a prep standpoint, but from a pure driving standpoint. i can say with conviction that personally i know i'm nowhere near that elite and really need to work on driving if i want to get there.

SM is evolving at an un-Darwin-like rate. It's pretty incredible.

To be fair, though, your 5th place finish last year was, uh, pretty amazing considering you brought a dull knife to a machine-gun fight. At least in the horsepower and tire department.

I prolly agree w/you Ryan. I just know that I have re-thought the whole deal and have moved to STU. My primary reason is $$. This is actually my daily driver (to and from the law office & the grocery store). My secondary reason is the absolute killer competition here in STU in the SW Region (Texas). It will be good conditioning for Nationals.

jason, yah if we had a bigger stu field up here, it would be fun and cheaper to run in stu than sm. but the gearhead in some of us just want the baddest azz cars evar and street mod is where is at for that. but most definitely agreed, stu is one of the best things to happen in autocross for the e36 m3 owners.

john, while the run in 04 year was good, it was still way off of where the top 4 guys were. in very early 04, tony and i were somewhat keeping up with the west coast cars, but vics car had just come back together and gary was having some early season cone-troubles. by mid season, gary and vic got everything sorted out and were running away. after getting a sumpreme arse whooping in atwater 04, i just started going to every single event i could. porsche club, scca, local clubs, whatever. 2 day race weekends, sometimes 3 day race weekends every single weekend. i think that really helped.

of course in 05 i didn't run at all before nationals, so we had no idea what we were getting into going there. my car only a tad faster than the year before, maybe, but everyone got much faster. it didn't help that i wasn't really driving so well either. my point is that in a builder-class like sm, we forgot that you still have to drive the thing. that the dsp guys were running trophy-level sm times just makes that clear. even in a unlimited class like sm, it's important to work on the driver as much as the car. :D

edit: speaking of porsche club, john is that a fly yellow 996 in yer sig!?!?
