View Full Version : Install of illuminated Gear Knob
Rich1983 09-29-2005, 12:23 PM Hello,
I wondered if anyone could help. I have a BMW Z3 2.8 '98 model, and i have just purchased a BMW m tec gear knob, the one that illuminates.
It has come with its own cradle, like a harness, which has a patch style cable on it. I cannot find where to install it though, can anyone help?
I will try to get a picture to help.
Rich

Post a pic of the wiring and connector that came with the shift knob.
My '93 325is has a random two-lead connector under the sunglasses tray that isn't attached to anything. One of these days, I'll measure the voltage across it and see if it comes on with the lights, but I assume it is for a lighted shift knob.
Your car may have something similar hiding under the console.
morganbressler 09-29-2005, 05:58 PM Im not sure, buy my 325i has a light under the cup holder console addition meant for an ashtrey to come on with the lights.
Also, i never metered it, so its worth a shot. That is your bizzatchy right there.
Rich1983 09-29-2005, 05:58 PM These are the 2 pictures i have taken of the cable, hopefully somebody will be able to point me in the right direction as to where i can plug these in?
ASCH MAN 09-30-2005, 10:28 AM The pics are kind of small, but from what i read in the past, it plugs in somewhere around the dial to turn on the lights. However, most people just tap into the lights for the controls in front of the gear knob. You can cut it and use T-Taps.

That's a huge harness for just a lighted shift knob!
Benny Z 09-30-2005, 11:26 AM lighted shift knobs are for japanese compacts and cornfield corvettes.
they have no place in a fine german automobile.

I disagree as longas they light up oem amber. I believe they come stock in e46 and e39 m's. I think they look very sweet at night.
Benny Z 09-30-2005, 11:48 AM really???
wow
i guess amber wouldn't be so bad. i'm picturing red, blue, and purple flashing LED.

Naw, just a simple illuminated shift pattern. No LEDs or anything obnoxious.
They are indeed standard on the E46 M3 and E39 M5. Also, I think that the rest -of-the-world E36 M3 Evo had it as well.
kosta 09-30-2005, 12:41 PM those connectors look weird
for the e36 the connector goes to the cig lighter and your done
Rich1983 09-30-2005, 02:43 PM So if I just patch from the cig lighter, i should be fine?
With most of the wires around the car though, there are 2 wires. Brown, and a grey/red. No grey/black which is on the harness.
taseal 09-30-2005, 06:37 PM damn i'm gunna get one of these, but that wire harness looks like it plugs into a comptuer or something
maybe this knob shifts for you too? :D
i dont see why it would need so many wires for like 3 LEDs lol

Came stock on my car and I believe it is also stock on late model E36 M3s.
Rich1983 09-30-2005, 06:46 PM lol, i know what you mean, but apparantly its just a amber light below, a soft finish, not these bright leds from japanese gear knobs, so i dont really understand it.
awahl63 10-01-2005, 12:24 PM I think it's pretty cool...the oem amber that is
Mike 91 318ic 10-01-2005, 02:23 PM It's actually more red than amber but it still looks cool. I added one to my car years ago, I bought it new on Ebay for less than the dealer or other online parts places, I think it was $120. As for the wiring it's just two wires and you can patch them into the cigarette lighter wiring this way it'll dim too.
Sorry the pic is blurry
