These are two items that I created myself in my personal woodshop.

Does anyone think there would be a market for these with E38 owners ?

The first is a custom enclosure that can be mounted in the otherwise useless
compartment over the 740iL's battery (won't work for 750iL, most of them have
DUAL batteries)

It can be used to mount your MP3 CD Changer, or your trunk mounted DVD or
VCR.

The second item is what I like to call a "curtain wall", made especially for
the E38 to hide your subwoofer / amplifier install.

Price would be around $50.00 for the enclosure and $75.00 for the curtain
wall.

Comments ? Suggestions? Questions?

Just regarding the "curtain".

The cost of a sheet of 3/4" mdf (retail) (if thats what your using) ~ $20.00
This would be enough to make at least 4 maybe 5 units.

Box carpet (retail) ~ $3.00/linear foot and 4 ft wide. So enough carpet to cover all 5 pieces ~ $60.00.

So for a monetary investment of ~80.00 (retail) you would make $375.00 total off the sale of the 5 units. Less the investment of $80 yeilds $295.00. Labor hrs to cut/ carpet all 5 curtains approx 1 1/2 hours. Ill toss in a R/D cost of $40.00 to make the template (approx 30 mintues). So now we are at $255.00.
This gives you a rate of $127.50/ hr  thats a pretty sweet gig.

I suppose for a person without the basic tools needed (jig and skill saw) and/ or the time, some sort of monetary charge would be fair but I think you are a bit steep. :help

Other then the $$$ I think they are both very clean pieces.

We could do the same breakdown for the cd changer/ dvd player/ etc box as well..... :confused

Not bad for the changer holder but if size permits, I'd rather put a changer in my glove box (that's what I did). The box you made looks stock though and is very clean so anything that can't fit in a tight spot and go back there. Nice work!

I think my main beef is, whenever someone tries to offer this forum something that is a HELLUVA lot cheaper than anything that is on the market, you STILL get bashed for it.

Take for example, my local Best Buy wanted $250.00 (without tax) to fabricate a curtain wall and an additional $150.00 to come up with some means of mounting the 2nd CD changer.

I was under the assumption that since most of us have spent excess $30k on our vehicles, $75.00 wouldn't be so bad.

Trust me, this is by NO means a way for me to make a full time living.

I have a career for that.

This was just a hobby, and a way to help out members that either don't have the time, the desire, or the tools to make something like this.

Gee, thanks.

hah!

the difference between you and best buy doing it is that the best buy guys (ugh) are (and i hate to say this...this is the loosest definition of this word possible) professionals.

if you think you've really got a hot product, buy a banner ad. people can't reply to banner ads. ...and it will give you more credibility. just my $0.02.

oh, and i paid just over $4k for my bimmer.

5k here, just a reliable car to get me through my last couple years of college then I will be buying a significant upgrade. Can't beat 4 or 5k for a Bimmer though, they are sooo freakin reliable.

What's the difference between communist russia and bf.c ca&e?

Communist Russia was less oppressive.

So now you are calling it non-professional, shoddy work? Give me a break. Credibility? Do you not trust him? You paid $4K for your bimmer, maybe that’s the problem buddy.

You want him to buy a banner so he will have to charge more and get bashed on price again? :confused

Don't take offense to these guys tdaniely, we e38 owners are a bit more anal about our installs being clean vs. a hack job. $50 - $75 also isn’t that bad to us compared to your typical e36 driver. Pssh, I pay $75 for a tank of gas for this beast.

that's a cool ladder truck you got there mang.

Ben could make the argument in turn that the e38 is for a less skillful driver who cannot do anything for themselves. Hence automatic transmission only. Also that they may be too fat to fit in a smaller 3 series.

If you got mad there, drop it.

Peter
E23, E32, E38 owner (and I would have another 740 if I could afford a tranny swap, mmm 6 speed)
E34 M5
E36 325is
E36 M3

And just as lazy and picky and cheap as anyone else on this board
!

JPWheelr

and those beauty boards do look much nicer than a lot of the home-grown ones I have seen on here before, and nicer than a lot I have made. That the shipped price?

Here here.....I don't get anywhere NEAR a full tank unless I take a $100.00 bill out of the wallet.

......And with any LUCK, i get a $20 back

Obviously not a diverse BMW enthusiast, the e38 was offered with a 6-speed (just not in the U.S.). If YOU are mad, you should see how mad stock 325 drivers get when I rape them with a 4300lbs car.

Benny Z

i did not call his curtain non-professional, shoddy work. don't put words into my mouth. state your case, but don't twist what i said. go back and re-read.

what i DID say was that one would expect to pay a pretty penny for a piece like this made by a car audio installation professional. this gent, as nice as he seems to be, claims to have another profession. put 2 and 2 together.

with his profit margain, there should be no reason not to have advertising fees cushioned into the price.

...you should see how mad stock 325 drivers get when I rape them with a 4300lbs car.

no, what's sad is bragging about raping a 325. period.

So are you saying a 325 is slow? My apologies, I didn’t mean to sound like I was putting words in your mouth. I just don’t think advertising is a viable option.

Benny Z
09-29-2005, 11:51 PM
So are you saying a 325 is slow?

i would laugh at anyone who tries to convince me otherwise.

don't get me wrong, i have a lot of fun in my 325. it's a hoot for a family sedan. ...but it is hardly a straight-line stoplight racer.

i dont think $75 is unreasonable at all. I would guess around $25 for materials to purchase. Thats $50 worth of labor. I wouldn't mind paying someone $50 to make that for me, if it took 20 mins or 20 hours, $50 to make it is NOT that much...probably spend more on an OEM BMW lightbulb.
