View Full Version : rough finish surface?
olega_ts 09-27-2005, 09:17 AM Hello guys,
kind of unusual problem here, the finish on my car looks good, but it's very rough on touch. I detailed the car around 3 weeks ago - removed swirls with 3M FII, coat of Z1, a couple coats of Z2 and then Z8. After that finish looks great, was very ... very smooth to touch, but now all of sudden I diskovered that it feels like almost worn out very fine sandpaper. Any clues what that could be? Thanks!

Dod you clay it?
cosmom3 09-27-2005, 01:41 PM Clay=glass....
olega_ts 09-27-2005, 02:44 PM I did clay it before 3M FII, the finish was unbelivable when I was done with Zaino. When I've found this problem,at first I thought - I'll just put another coat and that should fix the problem - but it didn't help. Had to do it the hard way - I just finishing it now, washed it with Dawn (btw, it didn't remove Zaino completely), clay it and I've found one interesting thing - finish felt rough only on horizontal surfaces, so my guess is that maybe dust got embedded into fresh wax, not even wax - into Z8 or something, that's why it looks fine, but feels rough on touch. Claying it now, it definately helps.
Thank you guys!
MP525i 09-28-2005, 08:41 AM logically the clay bar should take care of that. if like you said, it feels smooth after you detail it, then maybe the problem is where you're driving or where you park it.
i'm only saying that because i find it hard to believe that after you clay a car it still feels rough. this problem has me very puzzled.
maybe it the type of clay you're using.. how old is it? how many times has it been used? :dunno

olega_ts 09-28-2005, 09:41 AM Sorry for the confusion, here is better explanation - the car finish was smooth as glass, after Dawn, clay, 3M FII and 3 coats of Z2, but two weeks later, while washing it I've found that finish still looks great but feels VERY rough, it felt like car was not detailed for years. I tried to fix the problem by applying another coat of Zaino, but it didn't help, then I tried to polish it with 3M FII - didn't help either, only the clay bar solved the problem. I had to do the whole detailing process again, spent all day doing it and it's raining today ...
Still don't know how is it possible for finish to look great and be very rough at the same time.
MP525i 09-28-2005, 10:00 AM well after driving for 2 weeks, what you may be feeling is all the dirt and debris from the road. although, if you went through the whole process, i don't see how only 2 weeks of driving can make it feel like that.
this is very strange. i detailed my car 3 weeks ago and it still feels soft.
do you always wash the car with dawn soap? maybe try a different soap.
