I said this in one thread, but maybe someone else will notice here...

I really want to change my center driveshaft support bearing this weekend. I just need to pop loose a big-ass 12 point nut that goes into the U-joint. You can't fit an air tool in there, or anything else. I've got a wrench that I can fit in there (after modifying it with a grinder). I've given up on trying to remove it while its on the car. I've blasted it with PB Blaster plenty of times, tried heating it with a torch, and then putting all my leg strength into it, but I end up just barely rotating the driveshaft and squeezing the tires against the wheel chocks, but never breaking nut free.
So, I think I cna just unbolt the driveshaft at both ends, put one side of the U-joint in a vice, and break it free then. I can also heat it some, and then use a big-ass cheater pipe.

So... I could remove the driveshaft at my place, and then drive it over to someone's house in my Dodge, and then use the vice real quick. Or, if you wanna help more, and actually see the 2002, then I could just take the driveshaft out at your place. :D

Thanks in advance if you got any ideas.

I have a small, light-duty vice, jaws open to 2 1/2". If it's big enough let me know.

Sorry can't help you there. However, you might want to check if it is a reverse thread pattern. I really don't know or ever heard about reverse pattern on drive shaft, but never heard about it being that tight.

Good luck!

I can mount it real fast if you want. I removed it from the bench when I moved and just didn't put it back.

oooh, 2 vices. I'm not sure if the 2.5" will work. I'll try to measure it in the morning, and let ya know. 2xM, is yours a little bigger, and will it be fairly sturdy to put some force into it? and what part of the island are you on?
Kailua is kinda far, but I might do that.

The spec on the nut says 130 lbft of torque, plus its got 30 years of rust. In the manual it doesn't say anything about a reverse thread. It just shows the U-joint in a vice and somebody popping it right out...
Thanks much for the help, I hope to drop by sometime this weekend. :)

and if I got no other choice, my backup plan is to do it at work.... but that wouldn't look good. I'd have to call ahead to get a boat, drive to Kaneohe, then hope I can get a boat driver to not notice that I'm carrying a big-ass driveshaft with me. :shifty

Argh, I'm lazy. :(

I wanted to do it today... but too much other little stuff to take care of.. it'll have to wait. On a better note, I manage to get the car idling much lower and quieter. I just leaned out the carb some and turned the idle speed way down. It was easier to do that now that I got the timing advanced more than stock.
Now you can barely tell if the car is running.
That should improve my mileage over the 16 mpg I was getting.

I also got my new caliper bolt and tightened the fuck outta all of them. :buttrock

I got your phone number 2xM, and I might give you a call sometime. Wanna do it on a weeknight? I work in Kaneohe till 5pm, but they owe me some hours, so I can skip out early one day and do it at your place. :redspot

I hope you used a little blue lock tight!
That will help to prevent it from coming out!

not yet, gotta pick some up from the store.. Then I'll take them out and do it again, cuz i'm weird that way....
I still gotta do the master cylinder, so I'll be under there bleedin everything again anyways.
For good news, I now have a working choke control! :buttrock
I had to pull out the fuse panel and thread the cable thru the fender, and down next to hood release cable, then mounted it under dash. It makes it nice for gettin the engine warmed up quick without having to heel-toe everytime the engine is cold.
