Hello Everyone,

First, I would have to say that I do LOVE the stereo in the Z4 - it's probably the best stock stereo I've ever heard in a car (except in the super luxo cars).

So anyway, I was playing around with the "Fade" part of the adjustments and faded all the sound to the rear speakers only. It sounds seriously WEAK! What's up with that? Yet, when I put it back to 50/50 front to back, the stereo DOES sound nice. I just expected louder and better sound to come from the back since there are 4 fairly LARGE speakers back there.

Can anyone else try this and tell me how the back speakers sound to them?

Thanks!

I dont think that the rear speakers are hooked up to the rear channel. If i remember correctly try moving the fade to the front i think that may make it better. In the rear there are two 3" mid ranges at the top and two 6" sealed subs. All the speakers are made by audiophile.

The sound system is the best i have ever heard and owned considering there are 10 speakers in this tiny car. I also have my ipod hooked up to the system, never using the cd player anymore.

The rear speakers are definitely hooked up to the rear. But it's just that the sound does not seem loud enough when the music is faded to the rear completely. I would have thought that most of the bass would be coming from the rear by the appearance of the size of the speakers. Instead, it seems like most of the bass is coming from the footwell speakers.

Could you try playing music and fading the sound back and forth from the front to the rears? Thanks in advance!

First off do you have the upgraded sound system?

Yes, the 3.0 has the Carver system as standard. I also found out that the rear bass speakers are actually TIED TO THE FRONT speakers when playing with the fade controls. If you take off the speaker grills, you'll see that they move LESS when settings are faded to the rear and move MORE when faded to the FRONT! Go figure...

I would guess if you were to remove the seats and alow the rear speakers the room you might just hear a difference. Hmmm . . . .

No mods...I think the only thing I've done to it is add the chrome tail pipe tips, the Valentine 1 hardwired with the stealth display thingy, the storage box under the seat (why this didn't come standard, I don't know), and the windstop. The storage box is coming in at the end of this week.

Other than that, the real mods I will be doing is selling it for the M Roadster (or a Boxster S - ahhh sacrilege!). But I really really like the look of the Z4 whereas I'm so so with the looks of the Boxster S. But it "feels" so much better except for the shifter and the throttle control.

Look for my post in the audio section. I drove a 2.5 for about a week and traded it back in for a 3.0. When I got the 3.0 the bass was nothing like the 2.5. I took it back and they claimed it was the amp and replaced it. Got it back and still wasn't working. In fact it got worse. A few times the audio cut out completely. This time they said they replaced the amp again. Seems to be working better, but doesn't have the punch of the 2.5. Not sure what to do at this point.

That must be the Carver system. My 2.5's stock system has more bass than I want, though no one else seems to share that opinion. On a song mixed for heavy bass (Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On", for example) it's annoying.

Yeah Carver is std in the 3.0. Harmon Kardon in the 2.5 I believe. I think I'll go to an aftermarket setup for the subs now. It's one of those stupid situations where the "upgrade" is worse.

Not everyone agrees that the upgrade is worse. Some of us really like the system in the 3.0. :stickoutt I have only heard the 2.5 from outside the car....does it really thump hard? I think the Carver in the 3.0 is pretty damn good. :cool One Caveat: I hate that thanks to the DSP amp in the "upgraded" system I CANNOT iPod my Z4! I would have done this already and don't feel like doing the work arounds. :mad I've been away for awhile, has an easier work around come about for this?

Oh and I agree that the speakers behnd the seats are a little weaker than can be expected but they will sound alot better if you pull the seats foward just a little bit.

The premium system is growing on me a little, but there's a noticeable difference between the two. My salesman and service writer agreed it didn't seem right at all. I think the amp was really shorting out when I first got it because the mid-range speakers behind each headrest were completely dead, and the entire system would intermittently cut out altogether. After putting in a new amp it's better, but sounds nothing like the 2.5.
