View Full Version : What a sprinkler system did to my car....
DuctApe66 09-23-2005, 03:38 PM Here is my car after it was sprayed with a sprinkler system. Apon noticing the hard water stains I then washed the car properly and dried it and then snapped this photo because the mineral deposits wouldn't budge.

And here is a close up. The deposits are embedded within the clearcoat and wax.

I have just spent the better part of 3 hours performing the following in an attempt to remove the water stains from the rear quarter panel of the drivers side.
After washing it I "clay barred" the rear quarter panel. Normally a clay bar last over the entire car but this one was toast after just the quarter panel.
I then masked the black trim with masking tape.
Then I applied a mild abrasive polish using my Porter & Cable orbital sander and McGuires heavy sponge. I hand buffed it afterwards using a soft microfiber detailing cloth.
Using the P&C again I applied a polish and sealant with a McGuires medium sponge and again buffed it with a MF cloth.
I then applied a coat of pure carnuba wax with the P&C and a McGuires soft sponge and buffed it with a MF cloth.
Here is the result - notice the difference between the door and rear quarter panel.

Needless to say I'll be spending the weekend doing the rest of the car.
sparticus 09-23-2005, 05:32 PM Try using some vinegar on it. It will desolve some of the mineral deposits. May make using the PC a little less time consuming?
Since your in Sac take a little break tomorrow and try to hit Vally Motorwerks show and shine.

I tried distilled vinegar yesterday with no success hence my absolute resolve to try to remove it today.
Unfortunately, we're attending a gallery artist expo tomorrow at our local dealer.
Thanks though.
Brent_Vino 09-23-2005, 07:35 PM was it YOUR sprinkler system or your neighbors?

It belongs to the Home Owners Association and although I've chatted and filed work orders at least half a dozen times, they have yet to be aimed correctly.
After washing the car yesterday and again this morning I took the car through the HOA office to show them the damage. They wouldn't even come outside to look. Their response was: "There is nothing we can do".
However, they "promised" again this morning that the spinklers would be adjusted today. So far no luck.
bmwpower 09-23-2005, 07:44 PM Get a lawyer. See how quick they get up off of their ass.
I suggest busting out the PC and some 3M FitII and a cutting pad. I had some nasty water streaks on a my side panels and doors after two $tealer paid for car washes. It took some time, but they came out.

I wish I could but they've covered their asses pretty well.
I checked through the CC&Rs and unfortunately any legal action has to be through their attorneys. I must pay upfront as well and they have the right to decide if legal action was necessary.
I'm forked, I know it, and now I just have to live with it until we can sell the house - which will be going on the market in November.

That doesn't sound right at all. So if one of the maintenance workers smashes your car with a weedwacker, they're not liable? Total BS. You have legal rights.
Take a sledge to the sprinkler head.
I've never looked at one of these sprinkler heads... can you adjust it instead of waiting for them?

It's the type that is in-ground that raise above-ground when water pressure is present. To get the water pressure a valve needs to be turned on with a special tool. I don't have the tool and the guy who's job it is doesn't speak english and unfortunately I cannot speak Spanish.
I'll wait until the next board meeting and raise it the issue there - if it isn't corrected in the mean time.

A cement block on top of the sprinkler head would do the trick nicely :)

MP525i 09-24-2005, 11:04 AM dude, i'm so sorry. i've had sprinklers hit my old avus m3, but after a good buffing with the pc, they came right out. i can't believe you did all that work and it's still there. :(
i wonder what the hell is in that water??!!! :confused
like mentioned above, try the 3m FI2.
and if that doesn't work, i'm pretty sure you can take legal action since you've already requested them to make a change and they are obligated to comply in a timely fashion.
good luck bro.

I used to have to park my car outside. My bmw car cover was my best friend. :)
AuburnGrad323is 09-27-2005, 01:48 AM If they won't do anything, try and fix them your self, and if they break thats their fault for not fixing them sooner, like you asked.

DuctApe66 09-27-2005, 04:18 PM I've just finished claying, cutting, polishing, sealing, and waxing. Total elapsed time to do left hand side of car: 6 hours and used 2 full bars of clay.

I'm off to buy a new "locking" car cover because my last one was stolen.
And I've just found out the HOA managers and staff have all resigned. :D
breden 09-28-2005, 10:21 AM great well at least the car is back to spot free condition, and good luck with the future managers even though you might be leaving that area soon. car looks great!
