Tony George and the IRL... breaking backs and crashing cars since 1996.

I saw that on the news last night. At first, when I saw the front half of the car fly away I thought of Zanardi's accident. Briscoe is lucky to be alive and in one piece.

at least the car did what it was designed to do in an event like that. imagine if that was 10 years ago, he would have been dead then.

Pretty sure that a fireball isn't part of what the car is supposed to do... nor is it supposed to become an airborne missile in a fence.

I was there yesterday it was horrific to see in person. The flame ball really had me thinking that something seriously was wrong. Amazing that he is alright. Chicagoland is a great track to watch at it was an amazing race.

the fireball isn't the dangerous part. the cheese grator fence is the dangerous part. and the car did what it was supposed to do, break up and keep the driver safe. i am aware that it was an auto race and not an airshow. :rolleyes
but they do need to do something about how close they run together. before this season i have NEVER seen a donought mark on the side pod of an open wheel car. how come we never saw these types of accidents when cart was at chicagoland or other high speed ovals? someone will get killed in a year or two if they keep this up.

A friend of mine who is a pilot for Chip Ganassi said he came away with a bruised lung and a broken clavacle. You can do that falling off a bike! Amazing what kind of safety they can engineer into those thinks.

The only motorsport accident I've seen in person is the 2001 Australian F1 grand prix when Ralf launched up and over Barrichello at the first turn taking out 6 or 7 cars. I was at the corner and when Barrichello went running past back to the pits you could clearly see the black tire mark on the top of his helmet. I have a scanned pic somewhere i will post if possible.
Briscoe was lucky, thankfully I think motorsport safety is slowly getting better.

They already have, it's called NASCAR.
