View Full Version : possible bad paint on my 2006 525i
Billysunshine 09-10-2005, 04:16 PM I have had my car for 11 days (375 miles). I first noticed a small discoloration on my hood 2 days after bring it home. The discoloration chipped off my first wash. It is 1/16" in diameter. I started inspecting the car and found 12 similar disclorations. They appear to be small peices of debris that have then painted over. I used my fingernail to softly remove one and it popped off leaving another chip, down to the primer. I have set an appointment with the dealer.
Has anyone had this problem, or heard of this?

sounds like a big problem, and they should take that car back and give u another.
Preppy 09-10-2005, 05:45 PM Yeah, pictures would help with your situation. I hope everything is taken care of by the dealer.

hookem12387 09-12-2005, 01:58 PM Wow, has anyone else heard of this? I agree with mp525, this could be a bad sign...

it's probably just one bad paint job out of thousands. i'm sure there's nothing to worry about, but it is something to consider. since back in the day mercedes were built like tanks.

Billysunshine 09-12-2005, 03:23 PM Just got back from dealership, met with manager and service manager. They were both perplexed about the paint. They agreed something was wrong. Here is my problem, I told them I wanted another car. They told me they would do everything they could to resolve the problem but they had to follow steps. They want to clay the car and paint the chips.
Should I let them do this?
I told them that is a temp. fix and I would not be happy. They said they had to try to identify the problem before we could move forward.
Should I allow them to do this or not. If not, how should I proceed.
Any input would be helpful.
I tried to take pics of the affected areas but they would not show up, too much glare.
SilverBeam 09-12-2005, 03:33 PM Does someone have the info on the lawsuit somewhat similar to this? I don't think you will get a new car, but I'd fight for a full repaint of factory paint.
MP525i 09-12-2005, 03:42 PM she's right. you might not get a new car... but fight for a respray.
if there is large oxidation and chipping, then clay baring the car will NOT help.
tell them you want to respray the entire car. to make sure they've done this, make a tiny scratch in a place that isn't too noticable and that isn't by any of the damaged area's. if you get the car back and it's not fixed, then you'll have another case as to them not painting the whole car.
go in prepared. hopefully more people can chime in as to arm you before talking to them again.

Billysunshine 09-12-2005, 03:49 PM I have found 2 similar cases of paint problems. One person claims he recieved a new car, the other is still fighting it.
I will keep updating, thanks for any info.
There has to be some sort of Lemon Law that would come into effect there. If your dealer does not solve it I would go BMW NA directly.
Billysunshine 09-12-2005, 03:53 PM Thanks, I am reviewing the lemon law book I got. I wonder if I should be proactive and contact BMW NA anyways to inform them of the problem and what the dealer wants to do. If I can get their opinion, maybe it will be different and they will want to see the car.
I will see what happens, all I know is I have a 2 week old 525i and the paint is crap. I should not have to be dealing with this at all.
builder 09-12-2005, 03:54 PM Ouch. For that kind of money don't settle for anything less then a full paint job
Lawrence1 09-12-2005, 06:59 PM call BMWNA and tell them you will not accept anything less than a new car and that a problem of this sort is UNACCEPTABLE on a brand new car; not to mention a brand new BMW in the year 2006. I mean every automaker makes mistakes sometimes but that doesnt mean they shouldnt step up and take care of them.
FYI, a repainted car will be worth less than a comparable car that has the original factory paint job.
butterm3 09-12-2005, 07:35 PM just keep in mind that if you deceide to either repair your car will always have a depreciated value, so I would go after that as well if they do not give you a new car.....
Gene V 09-12-2005, 08:01 PM a respray will never be a good as the factory paint job...
SilverBeam 09-12-2005, 09:59 PM a respray will never be a good as the factory paint job...
Unless it is factory paint.
The other case was a car being damanged in shipping and it was repainted. The new owner found out and sued. One court awarded him over a million dollars. Another court found this win to be way too much and cut it down to 50,000, enough for him to buy a new car.
It sorta seems like we're jumping the gun. The dealership barely has time to react here. Let them investigate, offer solutions, and then see if they can get it the way you want.
But yeah, id be def. going with a replacement car, or a full repaint - the issue is that its a brand new, defective car, which you would not have purchased knowing the defective condition of the paint (or so it seems).
Billysunshine 09-13-2005, 09:32 AM Well, I contacted BMW NA and got a pretty quick response.
They advised me to let the dealer do what they can.
If I am not satisfied or have any problems, they want me to call them
I guess that is a good sign.
I will post results of my next appointment on Tuesday.
They have a paint specialist coming to see the car.
This really sucks.

i doubt they give a damn. they will try to solve the matter with least expensive method possible.
i recommend you talk to the BMW NA directly just to see what options you have and to let dealers know that you ain't settling for knock-offs.
khmernathan 09-22-2005, 05:51 PM I noticed on the hood of my titanium silver 325. It's like a speck of dust was painted over. I'm not sure if I should contact BMW about it becuase it's not really noticeable unless u look for it. It does bug me that a 36,000 dollar car can't have a perfect paint job
