just curious how bad they get in the colder temps?

is it just snow that a big deal or does the temp matter...
i have michelin pilot sport on right now, and my fronts are cooked but i have ok tread left in the back...

now my spare tire is a michelin pilot sport as well so i'm wondering if i can just throw that on and get only 1 new pilot sport for the front instead of 4 new all season tires...

any thoughts? :confused

everyone has an opinion on these boards... lets hear some

At 32 Degrees the performance tire will take approximately 25% longer to stop than an all season tire. How long you can wait depends on mother nature. Don't get caught like I did last year and have to drive in the snow.
A 2 mile drive took me a half an hour.

Is there a temp that the rubber changes and the performance of the tire is permintaly changed?

or if it makes more sense.. at xtemp does the temp change the tires and they no longer perform as well as they would if the tire was never exposed to that temp?

What's the optimal temperature for the summer tires?

I run them all year round.

Same here in Socal... As long as the summer tires aren't bald they'll work. Lucky me.

Im going to be an ass here. All year round baby :alright. With the amount I drive, I tend to get a pair in fall, and another in spring. All summer tires.

I always put on studded winter tires but since they are a lot softer and studs are very noisy on asphalt I always change them when the weather actually turns to winter. Snow tires are generally a lot softer (in a bad way, they "bend" under hard braking) than performance tires and that is a bad thing on dry asphalt so I'd keep the PS:s on until forecasted snow. What I'd be worried about is your thread if you get lots of rain in the autumn...

4 seasons > 4x summer :devillook

The rubber on the tire will not change permanently. As a performance tire gets colder they will get harder. At that point they will loose traction. Once the temp goes back up they will soften up again.
If I can help let me know.
Thank you

I just bought a set of Blizzaks for the winter. I will wait until late October to put them on the car. And then probably run them until March. Like the previous guy posted, watch the forecasts and don't get caught with them in your garage.

I got caught last year and drove home from work in about 5" of snow. It took me 30minutes for a 2 mile drive.

That's quite a while on snow tires just for Kansas City. I guess you guys do see a lot more than we do here in Tulsa, though. I'm not planning on any snow tires here, we can just take the civic when it snows.

Last year we had an October snow, then it was dry until December. So, it is hard to predict. But the new tires are mounted and balanced on an old set of rims I had and I can get them on the car in very little time. Now after spending $300 bucks I don't want them in garage while digging myself out of ditch because I wanted my car to look better for one more week.
