View Full Version : Rims leaking air?
Boomer 09-06-2005, 09:42 PM I fill up my tires with air, and depends on the rim's mood, they leak from over night to 2 weeks... so sometimes they get flat over a night and sometimes they dont at all.... for the past few days, my pax side driver keeps going low over night.... last week 2 of my rear tires kept going low, but this week they are ok...
I have BBS RX which are chrome(yes ugly) my mechanic told me that aluminum and chrome coating dont mix, so when chrome bubbles up the rims starting to leak air from the side....
so is there a solution for that?
thanks!
hnoppenberger 09-06-2005, 11:34 PM alls i know is i have that same problem on my left side front tire if i hit turns hard, like im flexing the sidewall of the tire and its leaking out air... if i take it really easy on the right turns it leaks no air... my tires are done though... buying new ones soon.
Boomer 09-07-2005, 01:55 PM hm, probably somehting else. my tires are new!
dman it.... im hoping its repairable because if the rims is cracked or that gay lookin chrome is comming off, im pretty screwed!
sirtiger 09-07-2005, 09:53 PM no solution. get new rims.
r u sure its leaking air? It would take a hell of a hit or a crappy rim to make it leak. Double check if its really your tires that are leaking.
m3mobbin 09-07-2005, 10:15 PM There are a couple of solutions actually :rolleyes . The first, and best, is to go to a wheel refinishing shop to get you chrome stripped and either have your wheels powdercoated (stronger but more $$) or painted (weaker but less$$). The second fix isn't as orthodox but you can bring your rims to a tire place and they have this black goop called bead sealer which they slop over in inside lip of your wheels. I bent on rim and even after I got it straightend it wouldn't hold air, after a year of bead sealer it still holds are like new.... Hope this helps.
m3mobbin 09-07-2005, 10:16 PM The leaking has nothing to do with the shape of the rim, its tiny air spaces in the finish that the air escapes from.
no solution. get new rims.

Boomer 09-08-2005, 08:20 PM cool thanks for all the answers guys.... unfortunately i am going with the cheapest solution and gonna try to seal the bead with that bead sealer
thanks again!
btw, my rims are BBS RX, should be top quality if its bbs, aint so?

i have the same problem, but the guy at the tire shop says fix a flat residue is slowly causing air to leak and he can grind it off but it usually comes back. he actually did a quick frind but it started leaking again. this bead sealer shit sounds awesome. is this a common thing for tire shops? which shop did you go to? thanks.
Boomer 09-11-2005, 07:14 PM BS!! tireshops in my area are tottaly gay!! I explained him my situation and he immmediately told me that i need bead sealant, because the leaking is inconsistent so that must be it.... but guess what, my car is too low for them to jack it up!! WTF! i guess they only work on 4X4'rs!! UGH!
SilverBeam 09-11-2005, 07:24 PM I have heard of this happening before. Chrome finish CAN cause wheels to leak air. Only solution is to refinish them or get new wheels.
Boomer 09-11-2005, 08:38 PM i wash i was as rich as you implied :)

Powdercoated is stronger and more expensive than painting? Thats the first time i've heard that...
