I just came across this product by accident, and it sounds like a good idea, but would it really work? Has anybody used this in their race car, or for that matter in any car/truck?
I was looking into buying oil filters for my Land Rover, and one site had this product in addition to the regular filter, and they said it's a great addition to a regular filter, and show a cut-out of the oem filter with the little metal parts attached to the side were the magnets were attached, it looks like to much metat to be running around an engine.

i've had a few mechanics warn me of magnets like that.

you run the risk of having a large chunk of metal break free from the magnet and start to float around the engine. lets face it, a bunch of little pieces are better than 1 large piece of metal.

but thats a worst case scenario, and my guess is it would only happen if you hit a bump in the road really hard (enough to break a charged chunk of metal free from the magnet)

EDIT: he may have been only talking about drain plug magnets, because it just dawned upon me that if a chunk broke free inside the filter it would just get stuck inside the filter fibers.

Just get a magnetic drain plug.

It seems like a good idea in theory, but wouldn't any metal shavings the magnets be able to pick up just get caught in the filter anyways?

Just seems to be more of a heat sink. I haven't seen any testing on whether or not it makes a difference.
