Hi All

Trip meter reset knob turns but has no effect - trip meter and odometer work fine. Any ideas on the fix on this problem - thanks as always.

Zambo, I'll swap with you, my trip meter reset works great but the odometer has only clicked over 79 miles in 11 years. I'm tipping you'll need to pull the speedo out and check to see if the knob is engaging the reset gears. When you take the speedo off the back of the instrument cluster the knob stays with the housing and may not have been aligned properly after checking/cleaning. While your there remove the Clock/Tacho and fuel/temp gauges from the housing and clean the glass. It gets dirty/foggy after a while - You'll be amazed at the difference.

thanks Shaun - I like this idea of yours to do a swap - it's one way of keeping my genuine 82332 miles car a low mileage car forever!

The glass on mine looks good - not as foggy as some - is the removal of the instrument pod a bid job, or not too painful?

Pulling the instrument cluster is pretty easy. There are two screws at the top of the gauges (see pic) remove them. Then remove the two panels either side of the steering column (I think you can do it with just the left one out) follow the speedo cable up to the back of the cluster. Undo burled nut, untill the cable can be removed from the cluster. There are 2 more thumb screws about 10cm either side of the speedo cable, (they should have a rubber washer). Then push from behind/pull from the front tilting up as it comes forward. When its all out you need to disconect the wiring. Instalation is the reverse. The 3 gauges are held in by 8 screws, I think you need to undo 6 of them to get the speedo out. It should take less than ten minutes to have it out. Good luck.

Today my odometer and tripmeter both ceased to work - spontaneously! So I now wish I hadn't bitched about the reset knob not operating! Now the speedo HAS to come out.

I don't have the two screws on the dash as per Beaner's photo, so am I safe to assume that it's just the speedo cable and a nut either side of the cable that needs to be lossened/removed to get the instrument pod out?

When this issue happens, is it usually bits that are broken inside or just a disconnect? if it's a breakage, are the bits hard to get to set it right.

Thanks

Zambo, if your speedo still works its the gears inside that are worn or broken, if the speedo stopped too it's the cable. You may need to find a good speedo place, preferably one that specialises in VDO gauges. You could try a 2nd hand one but that could be the same, or you could live with out an odometer like me and just think, you will never put any more miles on it.

Speedo is fine (a the moment!) so the gears it must be (sorry, that sounds like Yoda doesn't it?).

There is a good instrument place here so will get the thing fixed once I figure out how to remove it.

Thanks Beaner

On later 02s the two nuts to remove the cluster are behind it. You'll have to reach under the dash to the back of the cluster and remove them by hand, which is really easy since they are made out of rubber. The whole job really isn't to hard at all. Good luck

Zambo, This was from the archives on Roadfly. Apparently odo repair is not difficult.
1. remove speedo head
2. remove galvanized sheet metal at back of head
1. Remove the drive gear from the odometer shaft.
2. Wipe shaft and gear I.D. with alcohol.
3. The grey gear without numbers at right (looking forward/at face of speedo) is the one that slips. remove the number wheels axle and lightly peen the shaft where the grey gear sits or lightly stake the gear near the shaft hole with a center punch to shrink the hole diameter.
4. Put a tiny drop of green Loctite (red if it's all you can find) inside the gear (or supa glue).
5. Press the gear back onto the shaft, so that the grey gear is tight to the shaft.
6. Reinstall the speedometer in the instrument cluster.

Note that the sprockets go on only one way.
You can reset your mileage to 00000 or whatever

Hope it helps, you may have even inspired me to fix mine. At least you worked out your MPG before it died. Beaner7102. :D

Thanks Beaner - that's an excellent little how-to list. BTW, does peen mean to roughen up by striking (lightly I assume)? Once I get it off, all will be revealed no doubt.

As an aside, I took the afternoon off here and pulled a goldie sunroof from a donor car to replace in my sons Volvo 142 Grand Luxe - another nifty sports sedan (no groaning on the forum please!). Sunroofs aren't the black magic I thought once you are pulling them to bits BUT how many screws and fixing points for attaching hardware, cover strips, etc are there - but all pretty logical inclusions once you're into.

Looking at the pics from Keith's mega project the sunroof set up looks very similar on both cars, not a surprise given they're both Goldie products.

Thanks again for all the info on fixing the odometer.

Cheers

Zambo, your definition of peen is correct. I hope the sunroof on the Ovlov goes ok, do they have a leak problem like some of the 02's do? I will have to crack open my speedo next week, off to the Murray this weekend, should have the carb ready by then too. Beaner7102
