I'm building a custom box for my L7 and kicker manual states that I can put the sub in a ported or sealed box. I've heard the sub in a 6.0 cubic ft. ported box and it was very boomy. I don't want mine to be that boomy and everyone at the stereo shop says a small sealed enclosure tightens the bass up a bunch.I'm looking for your expert opinions. I'm doing the install tomorrow.

yes, sealed is what you're looking for.

6.0 ft3?!?!?!?! holy frickin box!A much smaller vented box tuned nice and low will give you much more output and play low, smooth and tight. Kicker has some good vented box recomendations on their site and in their manuals.

As a side note..
Im in the process of building a 10 ft^3 box for a customer for two TREO 15.22 SSi subs. It is a bandpass enclosure with six 4" ports going up thru the rear deck. I had given Craig at TREO my "max space allowance" in a diagram I sent to him for what I was thinking of building..... I didnt expect him to use every bit. :eyecrazy As far as the computer modeling says it should be one mean street beater. :redspot Only downfall is I need to make some door pods to hold some serious components for midbass as the box rolls off sharply at around 80hz. It will be fun to build but Im glad it isnt for my car. :D

ok, I'm still at a loss. I want tight bass but I still want it deep, the L7 I heard in a 6.0^3 box was very deep but it was just too boomy. It made my eyes shake in my head and messed with my heart beat. I still want that I just want to tighten it up. the box I'm building is roughly 3.0^3 ft box custom built to fit in the trunk of my e39. Would a sealed box with poly fill still deliver deep bass? :help

sealed will go deeper than ported, but will require much more power to do so.

it will also be much tighter.

you should try to couple it to the cabin via the ski pass if at all possible.

I'm powering it with a Hifonics brutus class d amp rated at 1500 watts RMS when dropped down to a 1 ohlm load. my L7 is a dvc, each rated at 2 ohlms so I can wire it for a 1 ohlm load or a 4 ohlm load. I hear running a 1 ohlm load laeds to overheating though?

Wire that sub in parallel... get it to a 1 ohm load. Thats what the amp is rated for. Heat will always be made its a necessary evil to audio amplification. With ample power, grounding and ventilation the amp will be fine.

I have lately prefered low tuned vented enclosures over sealed. Still very tight and smooth, not boomy at all. But to each their own. Three cubes sealed should do ya just fine with 1k watts to it. :cool
