View Full Version : Olympics, freaknic, and now the flood...
count_schemula 09-01-2005, 08:05 AM Prepare for the third major population increase in Atlanta in recent years.
Atlanta will now be Fulton, Gwinnett, Dekalb, Cobb and Clayton and Rockdale counties.
Doctor Wha 09-01-2005, 09:12 AM Um... huh? :confused
Might want to throw in a few details there, Count. ;)
BimmerDawg 09-01-2005, 09:15 AM So with the flooding of NO ATL will be populated by those seeking refuge from the waters and will put up shop here, thereby increasing the size of ATL tenfold?
Got it! :clap

That would certainly increase the customer base for your shop... :devillook :D
We might get some overflow, but from some of the news reports I'm seeing & hearing, the SuperDome people are being shipped to Houston, and many other evacuees are making for TN.

Freaknik didn't really cause a permanent population increase in Atlanta - just a temporary influx of a hundred thousand people in the downtown area during Spring Break.

Not to mention the same increase during that ridiculous NBA All Star game a few years ago.....

I thought that it already was this.
I heard, a few years ago, that a county will become a part of "Metro Atlanta" when a certain percentage of residents from that county travel to the existing "Metro Atlanta" to work. I do not remember they listed as the percentage...but per those rules...all of GA could some day become a part of "Metro Atlanta".

My employer has (or, rather, had) offices in NO and Baton Rouge. All of the employees from those offices are accounted for, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them transfer to our office.

count_schemula 09-02-2005, 01:05 AM Freaknic absolutely increased population. I dare say freaknic made Clayton county.
Black college kids from all over the east coast came here to party, and after college they moved here. I went to the first few freaknics, or more accurately, the first few freaknics came to me, and my impression from talking to the freakers was that compared to wherever they were going to school in West Virginia or Ohio, Atlanta was the hot place to be.
New Orleans will have the same effect. People there have no jobs, nothing to go back to. They will just move to Atlanta. Some texas cities will experience this as well.
The Olympics brought the Mexicans for the construction and they stayed.

I agree.
In addition, NNO will not be like NO for quite a while. Jobs thrive around big cities and Biloxi is also gone. Im thinking more than half will wind up in TX because they're already at the AstroDome. They'll most likely leech as long as they can there and seek for opportunities around Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worthless and Dallas.

Q: What's the best thing to ever come out of Georgia?
A: I-20 West. :D

Mostly I just like pimpin' Clayton. It has been the fastest growing county in the area.
Out driving I used to hate Gwinnett and Cobb plates, and I still do hate Gwinett plates quite a bit, those people will do the stupidest things in a car... but Clayton? Been hard hatin' on that plate for a while now. It's the new #1 suck plate.
Good call on the Douglas and Henry.
JuliusPleaser 09-03-2005, 10:51 AM Julius, do you know why the trees in georgia lean to the east? Because Alabama frikkin' blows!
You're wrong.
The trees lean to the west because Alabama sucks.
krisko 09-03-2005, 12:09 PM I didn't want to go there. I'll be racing Barber in November with PBOC, are you and Tim coming out for that one?
JuliusPleaser 09-04-2005, 11:29 AM Tim is planning to run the 924/968/951 at Barber in October, but I'm not sure about November.
I'll have a friend from California staying with me, and I'm trying to convince her to do a track day in my M3. If she decides to stay through November, I'll try to talk her into doing the PBOC event. If she's gone by then, I'll probably be there - just to hang out.
adeelpowers 09-04-2005, 12:28 PM When I was driving through Alabama to get to Mardi Gras two years ago there was a engraved sign at a rest stop that said "Alabama. We dare defend our rights."
WTF?

Might have been something to do with that redneck superior court judge who wanted to put that big carved sculpture of the Ten Commandments in some official building or other. :dunno
Not that I have a problem with the Ten Commandments per se, just anybody who tries to cram his or her religion down the throats of others. :shifty
JuliusPleaser 09-05-2005, 12:04 AM When I was driving through Alabama to get to Mardi Gras two years ago there was a engraved sign at a rest stop that said "Alabama. We dare defend our rights."
WTF?Alabama is full of religious/political crackpots - it's even worse than Texas.
Alabama is a lot like Georgia. There's Atlanta, and then there's Georgia. Same deal here with Birmingham. This city is actually very progressive, and quite civilized. The rest of Alabama is not.

While that may be the case for Alabama. Georgia has tons of great cities that are developing very well that are worth living in.
Alabama is the arm-pit of the US. :D

Name anything besides Atlanta?
Athens? if your in college maybe
Columbus? nope it sucks
Albany? nope it sucks
Augusta? Better than Albany since it is somewhere close to Columbia SC, but still sucks
Macon? surely not as it sucks big time
Valdosta? only if you are 19 and dont get sick listening to FL hottie bitch about the humidity
Gainesville? only if you know spanish
Savannah? After the downtown area tourist stuff wears off, it actually is a very dirty place, so nope, it sucks

I went to high school in Atlanta, and traveled the rest of the state extensively. It's exactly like Alabama - once you get out of the metro ATL area.
Besides, Alabama consistently beats Mississippi, Louisiana, & Arkansas in most categories. Mississippi is the armpit of the US. ;)

You guys are wrong if you think that I am talking about cities with high-rises. You don't need high-rises for the area to be nice. You were talking about civilized and progressive areas.
Georgia is WAAAYYY far away from a state with nothing to offer to people wanting to find nice places to live. Georgia is one of the top 5 places in the US worth living imho.
Anyways....do you guys really want to argue over opinion? :rolleyes
Doctor Wha 09-05-2005, 11:44 AM Mississippi is the armpit of the US. ;)
I used to think so, until I saw Oklahoma. :eyecrazy
The road conditions alone in that state is enough to make me never want to go inside those borders again. :thumbdown
Besides, Miss. has the Natchez Trace parkway, which is a great drive. :buttrock
