View Full Version : What's going on with the price of gas?

This morning gas was between $2.59 and $2.67, now cheapest I see is $3.09 with lines up the ass. I've heard the airlines are cancelling some flights for lack of fuel. I've heard rumors of rationing too...this sucks!!!!

- Some distributors are rationing their supplies to their retailers, but not everyone is doing it. Some retail outlets may be raising their prices as something of a hedging move against possible future supply prices, but they shouldn't remain that way forever.

- Ga. itself has ~10-day supply of gas on hand in storage tanks locally. If the electricity can be restored to the pumps coming out of La., the supply from there will resume.

- The US strategic oil reserve is loaning oil to refiners to help keep supplies moving.

- Just within the hour, the US govt., EPA, and DOT have temporarily waived certain regional fuel type requirements, as well as rules on trucking hours, to allow more gas to go to more places, more quickly.

So basically, if people are panicking, it's because they're buying into the hype, as opposed to knowing the facts. But then, the way bread and milk flies off of store shelves when one snowflake falls around here, I can't be too surprised.

$3.00/gallon at the BP on Haines Bridge Road. Both Regular and Plus grades were already depleted. Premium was all that was left. Good for me since all I pump is 93 octane. This pic was taken at 3:30 pm today, right before I filled up. (camera phone)

Here here...I'm draining a margarita bucket as I type.

Just watched CNBC, an oil pipeline that stretches from New Orleans to NYC (thru Atlanta) is shutdown indefinitely. The problem apparently is not a lack of gas but you would need 11,000 tanker trucks to transport what the pipeline can. This could definitely be a long term problem.

I actually heard one radio reporter this morning nearly arguing with the hype-monger anchors who were all but shrieking about this. Funny to hear a field reporter trying to talk down somebody back in the studio. On the other hand, it's nice to hear someone in the media who actually gives a damn about the facts, rather than just being a cog in the scare machine. :rolleyes

Even traffic? You wish. People wont learn from their mistakes cause they'll only look forward to cheap gas prices and disregard any new ways to commute or change. Pretty soon it'll be 20xx with gas at $10 and people will remember the good old days, sort of how oldies remember gas being a quarter.

Exactly. I can't believe everyone is doing this. I was coming home from work, pointing my fingers and laughing at all these idiots waiting for gas. It was like they were wasting gas waiting for it. There was an accident off of 29 near 285 at the Quiktrip just because they wanted to get gas. There was a Marathon off of 29 right down the road selling regular at 4.50 a gallon and there were still cars lined up there. I love how they can just change the price of old gas that they already bought. Talk about a rip off. They should only be able to change it based off of the cost of the current barrel, not the next. Everyone one is scared thinking that gas will just disappear into thin air, hence the hype about no more gas, so they went to go buy it before it did. The only good news I see about this is less people on the road and less SUVs. I think I only heard of 1 accident on 285 today though and that was because someone ran out of gas.

This non-crisis should abate within a few days. Just give the tanker trucks enough time to bring in more gasoline from Georgia's ports.

Had a chat with my friend who owns 2 gas stations outside of atlanta. He confirmed what we all know already: there is no basis for the run-up in price and that as soon as people come to their senses the price will drop a little and the hysteria will end and things will be back to status quo.

One interesting thing he said that i heard on the news a little later is that our governor froze gas prices as of 6 PM. So nobody is allowed to price gouge any longer. Only danger is stations running out only because of a relative spike in demand.

One interesting thing he said that i heard on the news a little later is that our governor froze gas prices as of 6 PM. So nobody is allowed to price gouge any longer. Only danger is stations running out only because of a relative spike in demand.
Actually, what he did is declare a state of emergency, which allows them to apply price-gouging laws.

Now, this does not mean prices are absolutely "frozen." If the price of wholesale gas goes up by "x," for instance, then the retail price can still be adjusted accordingly. However, any price increase has to be provable to authorities that it's a result of regular cost fluctuations. Prices are trackable by a number of means, but the gov't is also actively seeking input & reports from the public.

One thing they do say is that if you see anything much beyond ~$3 or so, you need to be very skeptical that it's legit.

If you see something you think is actual gouging, the number for the Govenor's Office of Consumer Affairs is (404) 651-8600.

Perdue signs order allowing sanctions against gas gougers

ATLANTA (AP) With some retailers advertising gasoline prices as high as $6 per gallon, Gov. Sonny Perdue signed an executive order Wednesday authorizing state sanctions against gas stations that gouge consumers.

"I do not believe there is an energy emergency in this state but we will not tolerate our citizens perceiving the fact there is by exorbitant price-gouging prices,'' he said.

Perdue's order allows the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs to seek civil sanctions against retailers who can't justify their prices based on the price they paid at the terminal for the product, adjusted for their normal markup.

"Frankly, when you prey upon the fears, the paranoia of citizens, it is akin to looting in a different sort of way,'' Perdue said.

As he spoke, long queues formed in Georgia's suburbs and cities, rural towns and backwaters, as drivers scrambled to fill their tanks with gas priced well over $3 a gallon at some stations.

Police in Sandersville had to direct traffic during a mid-morning rush on the pumps after two small stations ran out of gas, Police Chief John Harden said. In Washington, long lines for gas stretched into the town's main street, disrupting traffic.

"People are beginning to panic over the gasoline already,'' said Wilkes County Commissioner Donna Hardy. "People don't know what to expect at this point.''

John Harper, an east Cobb County resident, pulled up to a gas station in Stockbridge Wednesday evening when he saw an enticing empty parking lot. He promptly turned around once he the manager told him the gas prices $5.87 for a gallon of unleaded fuel.

"It's highway robbery,'' Harper said.

He was one of a half-dozen people who left after pulling up to the station. Soon after, the gas station manager decided to lower the gas prices by $2 a gallon.

The governor gave no specific examples of price gouging but said prices at some stations rose from $3 per gallon to $5 and $6 per gallon by Wednesday afternoon.

"We should not even have to be doing this,'' he said. "I'm frankly embarrassed for our state and some of our businesses that we have to do this.''

He acknowledged consumers may not always know if they are being gouged as gas prices change. "You just have to report this and our Office of Consumer Affairs will investigate,'' he said.

The Consumer Affairs office number is (404) 651-8600.

Hours before announcing his executive order, Perdue called on Georgians to remain calm over rising gas prices and fears of short supplies, saying, "This is a temporary problem due to Hurricane Katrina and will be resolved soon.''

He asked the state's drivers to alter any discretionary driving plans they might have for the Labor Day weekend and stay home with their families instead.

"There's no reason to panic. There's plenty of gas on the way, and the only reason we would have problems locally is if we rush out to hoard and try to accumulate gasoline that we won't need for a long time,'' he said during a news conference with Red Cross officials.

Perdue said gas distributors assured him they were working around the clock to restore service to two major gas pipelines that serve the state but he added that another major source of supply through the Georgia ports hasn't been hampered.

"Fresh fuel is continuing to reach our ports and Atlanta and other markets throughout Georgia,'' he said. Dick Pettys has covered Georgia government and politics since 1970. Associated Press writer Daniel Yee in Atlanta and photographer Gene Blythe in Stockbridge, Ga. contributed to this report.

I know we have gas, but I will still limit my self to walking for now. I washed my baby tonight, and I am going to cover her up. Sad day, but just so I can keep my gas, and safe my money. I know we have it, but screw paying 2.90 for regular around Auburn. I feel for ya'll in the ATL. I am the poor college student that can't afford to pay the price they want for 89, and hell no to 93. I filled up yesterday at this little hick station for 2.55. That will last me a while. People just need to calm the f@ck down. I just laugh at the kids filling up with daddy's credit card in their Tahoe, and F350's. I would choke on that bill. And then there are the rich people running the generators on the RV's for the game, and the H1 outside my window.

So basically, if people are panicking, it's because they're buying into the hype, as opposed to knowing the facts. But then, the way bread and milk flies off of store shelves when one snowflake falls around here, I can't be too surprised.
Exactly. I've been pissed off all day hearing about the inflated prices of gas. :mad

Actually, speaking of the bread thing, the day before Katrina hit the coast, I did stop in to my regular grocery store for a few things, and guess which shelves were picked nearly bare...

...yep!

Bread! :rolleyes

Sometimes, I laugh to keep from screaming... :shifty

I went into QT yesterday to get one of those delicious hotdogs and a dr. pepper, went up to the counter and the guy said "Which pump were you?" i happily said i got gas on monday and that it was all a hoax...the people around looked at me like i was nuts, and the cashier looked at me like he wanted to argue with me, but he shut up, and i ate my hot dog...

I never knew how much fun people watching was when you have a bunch of idiots in line to get gas at $4+/gallon. I saw people talking to each other telling them all the rumors they had heard...hahahahah, i cant even remember them now but it was funny, i happily got into my 325 and cranked the a/c and lead footed it back home in honor of national "Scare the shit out of idiots with gas prices" day...i think we should have a national holiday each year to do this, so everyone can just watch these jack asses.

Personally, I think the gas stations should have been able to set their prices as high as they wanted. I mean if there wasn't a shortage yesterday, the hysteria was bound to manufacture one. What better than $6 gas to dampen that panic? Good ol' capitalism can take care of this kind of stuff all by itself. It's all about supply and demand....a healthy supply of panic-driven sheep demanding a cliff to run themselves off of.

I looked at all the lines yesterday and had a good laugh. I got up this morning to drive in to work at about 10:00, pulled right up to a pump, put in 5 gallons (into my rental car) and took off. Yesterday that same gas station had a line stretching down the hwy about half a mile with about 20 SUV's, mini-vans and other guzzlers sitting there idling and wasting gas with their A/C's blowing full speed too (I'd imagine).

Hours of family fun.

Took a drive around my 'hood last night to check on the situation. The Kroger shopping center was still selling for $2.89; of course, you couldn't pull into the parking lot, idiots were blocking all 3 entrances/exits. Want food or take-out chinese food? Too damn bad. The BP closest to my house was $3.09. The BP up on Boulevard at I-20 was selling for $4.29. The Shell station on Moreland right at I-20 was selling for $4.99 (bastards, I don't get gas there anyway). Freaking morons EVERYWHERE. I'm glad I still have half a tank in both my cars.

I was listening to WSB radio last night about 7:00, and Clark Howard, the dorkiest man alive except for perhaps Bill Gates, said "Everybody take a chill pill". When Clark talks all hip and cool, you know sh!t is screwed up.

I'm just waiting around watching the insanity.
