View Full Version : Good spot for beers and dinner in downtown?
krisko 08-30-2005, 12:49 PM I'm meeting an old friend tonite in downtown, says he's working near the capital. Where's a good spot nearby for lots of good beers on tap and a casual dinner? I'm thinking a 'rock bottom' type of place but I don't want to go to buckhead.
Keechy E36 08-30-2005, 01:05 PM the vortex in little five points or midtown has alot of different beer, and pretty good food
Try Gordon Biersch on Peachtree street. It's right down from the Vortex and a lot nice than the Vortex. They brew their own beer. Good food too like the garlic fries! It's not far from the Capital.

jgerry 08-30-2005, 01:43 PM Just say NO to Gordon Biersch. No chain restaurants!!!! Hate 'em.
You can try The Highlander pub, 8th street and Monroe, next to the Midtown Art Cinema. It looks like a dive, it acts like a dive, but they have great food and an interesting clientele -- rock & roll meets goth meets hippie. I recommend getting tater tots, they're awesome.
Vortex is still a good choice, absolutely. Go to the one in L5points on Moreland and not the one on Peachtree.
The Euclid Ave Yacht Club in L5P (on Euclid Ave, obviously) always provides interesting people watching and plenty of beer, cheap (think PBR) to fancy. Food is just OK though.
If you want somewhat nicer, you can try Front Page News on Moreland. It's kind of commercial (almost a chain restaurant, danger!) but still pretty good. They make a mean bloody mary too.
kdavis 08-30-2005, 01:58 PM Righteous Room in the highlands. Good food cheap. Good drinks. Ask for Pat. He'll hook you up.
delgadoduvidoso 08-30-2005, 02:01 PM The Inman Park Patio is pretty good. There's a new place in Cabbagetown called Milltown Arms that would fit the bill perfectly as well.
krisko 08-30-2005, 03:22 PM Thanks for the advice, we settled on Gordon Biersch. I know, I'm a sellout to big business.

Smart choice. Forget those hole-in-the-wall run down crack houses. You will like GB. Good home made beer and good food with a nice looking atmosphere that's not surrounded by ghettoness.
krisko 08-30-2005, 04:20 PM I hate to say it but an upscale chain is usually a better bet than an independent restaurant. I'm not looking for fine cuisine here, I'm looking for good cold beer and decent food. I have to say the garlic fries pushed me over the edge though.

The ghetto is good! I have to say that because I live in-town. It's the law. I live in what most would probably consider a "ghetto-fied" neighborhood (Ormewood Park / East Atlanta) and there's a lot of great local places to frequent. I make an effort to eat, drink, and shop locally. Because if I and my neighbors didn't, there wouldn't BE a local pet shop, a furniture store, restaurants, bars, etc. I frequent and shop at those places because it makes my neighborhood a better place. We also welcome OTP (Outside The Perimeter) visitors. :wave :wave
But seriously, if you spend your whole life going to chain restaurants and bars, you're really missing out. Some of the very best eating, drinking, and meeting people experiences happen outside of the surburban "comfort zone". Not everyone will look and dress like you. There may be foreign people and black people and gay people. There may be foreign black gay people. When you live in a diverse area like I do, first you learn to tolerate all the weirdness. Then after a while, you learn to embrace it fully. I couldn't live out in the 'burbs ever again, I'd be bored to tears.
All in all, to each his own! Enjoy Gordon Biersch, it's pretty good (I used to go when I worked at The Biltmore right nearby)
count_schemula 08-30-2005, 04:58 PM Chains blow knob.
delgadoduvidoso 08-30-2005, 05:32 PM ...There may be foreign black gay people...
Oh noez!!!
We need to schedule an in-town ghetto meeting at some point. You, me, The Count, JoeCool, Karl...maybe some of the GT folks if they live in a really shitty dorm...
count_schemula 08-30-2005, 05:35 PM w3rd.
I've been a regular at the Righteous Room, but they just got a new cash register and the staff was shaken up and they were told to control alcohol costs. So, I'm kinda bar homeless... again. :(
If gasoline triples, whatever, I can deal. But when my bar tab triples... well, that's a pretty serious issue.

Hell yeah we should! In-town meetup. Let's hook it up.
jgerry 08-30-2005, 05:46 PM Chain restaurants be damned! All this talk about good intown eating has got me hungry. I'm going to The Highlander right now for dinner -- Tuesday is chicken pot pie day (yummy). Tater tots and Jaeger bombs for everyone! :beer :chicken :drink1 :woot:

Sounds good. I propose next Thursday evening (Sept. 8). Hopefully that'll give enough notice.
Suggestions on place? Lack of centralized parking kind of puts a damper on most East Atlanta, Highlands, and Cabbagetown joints (although Estoria has a fairly good sized lot). The Righteous Room has some parking (depending on time), IIRC. The Local may also be a good option.
Any thoughts? If we get some quasi-consensus I'll post a "Be there or be square" announcement.
BruceWayne 08-30-2005, 05:51 PM Thanks for the advice, we settled on Gordon Biersch. I know, I'm a sellout to big business.
FYI: Gordon Biersch is the same thing as Rock Bottom. Same home-brewed beers, same menu, owned by the same company.

Next Thursday works for me. Anyone else?
There's plenty of parking in East Atlanta on a Thursday night if we want to go there. Flatiron or The EARL maybe. 97 Estoria is one of my normal hangouts, I'm cool with that. I'm avoiding Righteous Room b/c I'm not really down with seeing one of the bartendresses (she pisses me off and owes me lots of $$$, that's what you get for loaning money to friends I guess).

Ohh! juicy! Martha? Becca? That witch looking woman on Sundays? The new hottie one that everyone is always mentally undressing?
Weird that our paths are so close to crossing.
I'm down. I prefer L5P or VaHi or Ponce so I can ride my bike, but wherever is cool.

Same suck?
I left the meet we had at rock bottom. I was getting a bad vibe. Sure enough, the next day, everyone was bitching about the place.
Learning to leave on bad vibes is a great new thing I've started doing. Saves me the stress.

You're Dolph Lundgren?
count_schemula 08-30-2005, 08:27 PM You're Dolph Lundgren?
I get that a lot from the older crowd. The kiddies just think I'm the guy on the Abercrombie and Fitch home page.

That's certainly what I thought...

Our sigs are tonally similar.

You mean you're not?????????
jgerry 08-31-2005, 02:47 AM Ohh! juicy! Martha? Becca? That witch looking woman on Sundays? The new hottie one that everyone is always mentally undressing?
I'd be willing to guess the new hottie one? I think she hasn't been working there too long, just saw her a couple of weeks ago out and about and she told me she's working there now. Think blonde, curvy, big boobs :boobies ... Her name is Heather.
Honestly, I could go to RR and not care; once you've been without your $$ for a few years, you kind of get over it and you don't really expect to get it back. Sad but true.
Doctor Wha 08-31-2005, 04:33 AM Our sigs are tonally similar.
This is very true...
...when mine is working, anyway. :rolleyes
Hopefully, I'll have that fixed soon enough. :shifty
Oh and a hearty welcome back to THE Count... Bwahaha! :D :buttrock
zeit00 08-31-2005, 07:59 AM I should be up for a meet. Especially downtown.. :buttrock
delgadoduvidoso 08-31-2005, 09:48 AM OK, here's what we got so far. It seems the Count prefers the Highlands/Ponce/L5P area. Righteous Room may best saved as a last resort because hot waitresses owe jgerry money. Here's a list of things that come to mind:
Ponce: The Local, Manuels, Righteous Room, Clairmont Lounge
Highlands: Neighbors, Dark Horse, That Irish Place whose name I can't remember, that other place next to Neighbors whose name I can't remember.
L5P: Brewhouse, Vortex, Euclid Avenue Yacht Club.
Anything jumping out at anybody? Left anything off that may be interesting? Karl, aren't you close to Magic City? :)
BruceWayne 08-31-2005, 12:47 PM ...
that other place next to Neighbors whose name I can't remember.
...
Hand-in-hand?
You also forgot Atkins Park!!! How could you do that???! :eyecrazy
I had my 18th, - 22nd bdays there! :stickoutt
delgadoduvidoso 09-02-2005, 05:08 PM You also forgot Atkins Park!!! How could you do that???! :eyecrazy
I may not be allowed there...mistakes were made...
Anyway, anyone object to the Brewhouse in Little Five? It seems like it meets all the usual meeting place criteria (save for the "either Buckhead or OTP" standard).
Let me know.
krisko 09-02-2005, 05:16 PM A follow up...Gordon Biersch is 'da bomb. Real good beer (enjoyed the Mertzen) and decent chicken marsala. I'll be going back sunday with friends in town for DragonCon.

krisko 09-02-2005, 08:42 PM They're pathetic but they are my best friends...there I admit it.
For the record, I was never into the 'scene' even when I was younger.

Don't forget it was my awesome idea.
krisko 09-03-2005, 10:16 AM Yup, it's a good place...we should plan a meet there (closer for me than buckhead).
2K5 325i 09-03-2005, 06:52 PM i dunno about places to get beers ( :devillook ) but if i were you, i'd avoid Vortex..... i got some serious food poisoning there.
