OK, My lat project car was a g-60 powered 260 hp Golf. Lots of easy bolt ons. I just picked up a 74 2002 thats mostly ti stuff. I need an exhaust! The car came with a brand new one...it was in the trunk. Its factory.

I guess my big question is who-if anyone- still makes a nice bolt on system? I am just gunna be doing some street stuff. Maybe an autocross here and there.

Supersprint? Scorpion? Fox? ANYONE?

Thanks!

Look under exhaust-performance exhaust.

Factory stock exhaust with a tii manifold is MORE than enough for anything nearing 150hp. Most 02 builders and racers will agree.

ANSA = A
New
System
Annually

They rot out like mad. Very low quality. Stick with the good OEM stuff, and be happy.

I think the older ones are supposed to have been a little bit better built. Seems more recent years have really gone to pot. We bought an OEM style Ansa system for my wife's VW a couple years ago. It gave us ONE year, and then fell apart. She drives a lot, but we don't have snow and salt here.

I guess I am sorta anal about sound-no jokes here :) . I see I can get into a Scorpion from one of the links above for $420.00-THANKS! Anyone have suggestions on what to stay away from? How's the Ansa at $100.00? I don't want to sound too much like a stickered up civic...but I want a little gain.

PS- Anyone want a new factory system?

Thanks again lads!

What about a sebring muffler? Its only around 110 and its made of stainless steel. Thats what I have on my car. Check 2002 haus.

here is my reccomendation. Tii exh manifold, 2" tubing from downpipe to 2" Magnaflow muffler in the back. It wont set you back much, sounds great, and flows very well.

At $100 the Ansa is a good buy and the sound quality is stunning!
Here is a recent video with sound. Not the best quality vid but it may give you a idea of the sound. Im the third car (the only '02).

No, not at all. It's a freeway commuter, so plenty of time to warm up and rid itself of condensation. Ansa exhausts are simply made from really crappy steel. Sure, the "sport" one is only $100 for an 02, but you have to as why? You DO get what you pay for! I'm not the one who came up the 'A New System Annually' acronym for them. Must be some truth to it.

Big question to ask is, what are you hoping to gain from the exhaust swap? If it's power you want, keep the stock system. They have been constantly proven to make good, reliable power. If it's just for the extra "power sound", then that by itself is pretty ricey already, no?

I really would like a bit of power, but just the same looks and a good sound are important. I guess I am after the all in one package!

Thanks for all of the advice. I think I will do some shopping tonight!

Wetest regards from the midwest!

I've not heard a lot of good things about Ansa quality. I had a supersprint on my '02, but had a shop build a custom set-up with a magnaflow after I got tired of having the Supersprint repaired. It kept cracking where the piping enters the muffler. I really like the Magnaflow. Not sure how loud it would be on a stock header/cat set-up. I have Stahl headers with a straight pipe to the magnaflow and it is very loud.

2nd on magnaflow. those are what Ireland sells and I've been pretty happy with it, but mine has a resonator on the ireland step headers. -- the stainless steel package from Ireland. Not too loud when cruzing but you can hear it growl when you stomp on it -- not farty but deep

I'd point out these are not 'bolt on' -- you gotta get and bend pipe, make hangers, so some welding etc. Any muffler shop or good mechanics shop can do it for ya tho

i too vote for the magnatone set-up from ireland...did it for my tii, awesome sound, deep and throaty. just take them (center resonator and muffler) to your local muffler shop. the stock tii set-up is also a good choice too a bit quieter but long lasting and tough. whatever you do you don't need more than 2" up to about 150-160 hp.

SOOO...I was ready to start shopping for a new system when I was driving home from a spirited country drive in my 02...I slowly approached my driveway when all of the sudden I hit a dip in my road...mind you...my road is an old time "historic" brick road..this dip I speak of caused the bottom of the exsisting muffler to smack the ground and snap the pipe right under the back seat! NEEDLESS to say I needed to do something asap!

Saturday morning, I drove the car (my neighbors HATE me now!) to my local muffler shop with the factory exhaust that came in the trunk...dropped her off and waited by the phone.....

4 hours later I get a call..."Sir, I need you to come down here...we have a problem..." When I show up, The car is up on the rack and the exhaust is sitting on the ground below. :mad

The toothless wonder working on the car say..."ya gots a header on this here thang"...HUH!? I never looked! I just got the car and the previous owner didn't mention it!

:buttrock Long story made short, The toothless wonder is now a toothless exhaust bending MESSIAH! This new pal of mine bent me up a beautiful header back system to the factory muffler in 2" and the car sounds AMAZING! :buttrock

From what I can tell its a Stahl header, but it might be something similar in desgn. HAPPY FIND OF THE WEEKEND!

PS_ Anyone need a factory down pipe?

Mandrel bent pipes with magnaflow

Did he weld it directly to the header? If so, take it back and ask him to put a flange in there. If you ever want to remove the exhaust as it is right now, you'll have to cut it. Also, make sure he braced it. if the weight of the entire exhaust is on the header, it WILL crack. soon. Other than that it sounds good!

Righton dude!

I ended up welding a cowguard on the bottom of my Ireland headers just to save them from the backwoods roads I drive. The other week I had it up on the rack and checked it out -- its been doing its job. Lots of little dents that would have been right on the bends of the header

Maybe ask your guy if he thinks you need something like that. I just took a 4 inch exhaust pipe cut in half and made a shield -- your new buddy could do that in about 10 mins probably

glad it worked out for ya!

I have a follow up appointment with him. He just left the 2" piece of tube coming out under the bumper. I am just a few miles away from Summit Racing, so I am going to swing by there and pick up a tasteful tip and some type of joint for between the header and the rest of the exhaust. He has a total of 4 hangers holding the exhaust up from the header back. I think for a short time it will be plenty sturdy.

Any suggestions for a tip?

Thanks!

I just cut the pipe off at an angle and called it good

Wow, interesting thread. Makes me kinda wonder if we could get audio of the different exhaust setups...

Anyone try a Bor- la muffler?

alfamitch
09-07-2005, 02:04 AM
Borla is too loud and not necessarily flows the best. I’ve seen borla XR1 cut apart, and it shrinks in diameter down the middle, so its not a true straight flow design. Magnaflow on the other hand does not do anything like that. And not to mention that Magnaflow is also cheaper. Dynomax is also very good, but maybe too quiet for some likes.
