I have a 1997 740i and looking at adding a subwoofer.
From what I read here and e38.org I might need to reconfigure the whole system to get correct frequency response due to DSP.(replace stock amp use adaptors from head unit to convert to RCA's, add crossovers for mids highs, run separate amps, and adapters for CD changer, etc)
Are all 740's stereo systems DSP. I have to guess that I have DSP. I have the base model stereo, no sub, no Nav, and have CD changer?
Am I DSP?

Not all E38s had DSP. Up until around 99 or 00 it was an option. Best way to tell if you have DSP is to see if you have an EQ setting with Echo/Delay. If you have NAV you will have a DSP option on the menu. If you do not have NAV...it is somewhere in your controls. Maybe someone has a picture.
Bottom line is that you will not get the full range of bass until you start spending some serious money and start replacing. I've decided that the engine is the best stereo I have.

I had a local auto sound shop install a 12" JL 12W0-4 Sub (single enclosure) with a JL Audio 250w monoblock amp driven by the rear deck speaker inputs (high side).
I like the added bass and it was a done deal for @ $850 per car (Baby & Mommy).

I think that I do not have DSP. I have a 1997 and I have not noticed any EQ settings on my radio. I also do not have NAV.
I will check my amp connectores to see what I have. Maybe I will get some pics.
Just maybe I will get lucky and have the rear deck option.
