I was reading on the 320i forums that a 3.64 ratio would be better for my car. Currently i have a 3.91 LSD and its good and all but 1st gear sucks. Anybody know where to get a 3.64 LSD or even the 3.45LSD??
Thanks, James

Hi, don't no where you get them but finding either of thoughs in a lsd might be hard. But the good news is all you need is a regular open diff in 3.64 or 3.45 and you can make it a LSD with your current setup by swapping the lsd unit into it. Hope that helps alittle.

Hey Blue. Hitch on over to http://www.kormanfastbmw.com/ . They have everything you need bolt in. The web site is a breeze to use and includes a chart with stock to suggested rear dif gearing.

Any idea on how hard it is to switch and what is too be switched. I never knew that I could just switch something to make it an LSD. Also does anyone know where to get a 3.64 Differential then?
Thanks, James
EDIT: I'm heading down to L.A area and want to see if they have any down there. thanks

I think early 320i had 3.64, best bet would be a pull a part lot. I seen a bunch of them on ebay, but they want $150 for a open diff. To swap you need to take out lsd unit with spacers and install onto the open diff ring gear. I haven't done it yet, but i here it's pretty straght forward. I also have a 3.91 lsd and a 3.45 open that i probably will make a 3.45 lsd. Theres a right up on tricords sight that will help more.

I've got another problem now. Just was driving around in my e21 when i hear some sort of clicking from the rear end of the car. i recently put on bbs 13'' rims and thought that was the problem with the long studs and all. I switched back to my Alpina rims and i am hearing the same clicking. I recently put in a different differential because i had to change the oil on it. So i just put my spare in there instead. Both are 3.91LSD. Any imputs on this clicking? Now i'll have to be riding in a Cadillac to L.A and not my bimmer :(

one option would be a torque-biasing quafie differential. It's better than a limited-slip but it costs like hell.

If its a stock one then it should have the 3.45 LSD. Thats what i had in mine until it froze up and i've been looking for a differential that works for mine since. I currently have 2 3.91LSD's. Ones in my car and ones a spare. And i also ave a 3.91 open diff. Now i'm looking to get a 3.64 open diff. and make it a LS...........
EDIT: you can also check by jacking the car up from the rear end and have it in neutral with the handbrake down. Then just spin a tire. If both spin the same way then its an LSD. If one spins forward and the other backward then its an open.

ohhh thanks for the tip. I am looking at autocrossing the hell out of this car and a 3.91 upgrade might be worth doing. Would you be willing to sell your spare?
