BMW's heritage department was obviously clearing out it's parts cupboard, when the engineers realised they have 90% of the parts needed to create a 2002tii. So that's what they are doing! Some engineers are building a one-off model from scratch, with red bodywork. I have no idea if it will be for sale or not, but I thought that was pretty cool.

I took a picture of it last month when I was in Munich. If anybody wants to host it I can email it.

Nice pics. Too bad it'd be illegal for them to sell new '02s - they'd have to tool up to some degree but I bet they have a lot of the original dies and stamps. I wonder what it'd cost to produce them now, just like they built them then?

Yep, when I saw this project, I thought that I could totally relate - to being a BMW assembly line worker!
I wish I had access to their parts stash :D

Rich Stern has more data on the project on his web site here:
The new 2002tii at Mobile Tradition (http://www.bmw2002.co.uk/news.htm)
They are building it for the Bavaria Tour in Germany next year - to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Neu Klasse cars. It would be cool to see it in person, perhaps I should start saving up for that trip!
