hey guys :) just wondering what your experiances have been with your e21 in the snow.

do they start good in the cold? my e30 does fairly well.. but not perfect

my new e21 is auto, i plan on getting really good winter tires and putting weight in the back. i dont suppose mines gonna have LSD being a 320i auto huh..

Highly unlikely that your E21 with have a LSD unless someone worked on it a little. You can drop one in, but you have to battle with the 2002 guys to purchase one.

I can't be much help on the snow question. My car used to be Auto, and it shifted nicely, no jerks or anything. I live in Arizona, never seen snow.

These e21's are actually very good in snow. It was better then my 4x2 truck wiht 400lbs in the bed. I was impressed. I try not to drive it in the snow when I can to keep it rust free. I had regular tires on it with no weight and I had no problems going in the white stuff. I also honed my rally driving skills around corners with it too!

My car is never going to see SNOW!! :lol

I would only imagine this Joe! I think it will never go in the snow because by the time it's actually complete and driving, so much time will have passed that global warming will be so bad, that there wont be anymore snow on the earth's surface! :D

i kidd.. :devillook

I drove my BMW for fun in the snow last year during a huge snow storm. Even though I didnt have much weight in the rear and had really cheap tires it still drove fairly good. I wouldnt want to rely on it as a snow driver but it is possable.

I drove mine in the snow a few times, I can't actually drive my e-21 from nov 1 - march 30th unless I can get it to pass smog, so I hit a few April snows with it and it did ok, it had studded snow tires on though...actually it still has those tires on I just pulled out the studs with a screwdriver so I would be legal for summer driving...

The worst part about those cars is no ABS, my e-36 is much better for snow driving it seems than the e-21.

One word for driving in the snow and ice "Blizzak".
You'll thank me later.........

i am about to ship out a set of brand new blizzaks that i was gonna use on my e30 but have decided to garage it instead, what size are turbine rims?

edit: 185/70-13 ?

i know if you just put winter tires on the front wheels of a honda, the back end will swing around consstantly from experiance.. what if i just had the blizzaks in the back and new all seasons in teh front of a e21?

if you only do them on the back you could probably get by, but what would happen is the back would stop faster than the front since the back tires grab better, and you might have problems staying straight when you stop....

E21's are good in the snow compaired to a street bike, other wise, anything else is better. I've driven many different cars in the snow, and the E21 was by far the worst, but if you must drive it in the snow get 4 good winter tires, not 2, and put at least 20kg of sand in the back between the wheels.. and buy a little compact shovel. thats what I did. have fun.

see where i live it snows like hell, but then its pretty much all melted by teh time you wake up in the morning for work.. i think last year i had to drive on snowy roads about 4 times total... so im not gonna go buy a whole car just for those 4 days like i did a few years ago, i bought a blazer and paid out teh ASS in gas but it went liek a bastard in the snow! lol but commuting back adn forth in it was torture and barely broke even with work

so the basic consensus is

-avoid if possible, not "good" at all in the snow

however

-with blizzaks, weight in the arse, and a tow chain, it is doable..

I drove mine 75 miles a day (to and from school) through 2 winters with all-seasons and 160lb in the trunk. It got a little crazy on occasion, but no accidents. :alright Just be careful not to lock up the brakes

If I was going to do it again, I'd definately go with the Blizzaks.

edit: I'm sure NY winters are much worse than OH winters
