View Full Version : What kind of tires do you run?
flyeryan 08-23-2005, 10:17 PM All there in the title. I'm thinking about Bridgestone Potenza G009's. I've heard they're pretty good, and everyone I've talked to has told me that the 5er tire size is rare (on the stock e34 anyway). They are 225-60R15.
So, opinions/experiences please. Thanks.

Nitto NT 555's
245/40/18's at the bow
265/35/18's at the stern.
Great grip in dry, probably same in wet (don't rain much here); quiet, cool directional tread pattern; Z-rated.
Your tire size don't sound too rare to me.

I didn't think so either, but today I went to a tire shop and the guy told me that no cars came from the factory with that size, and it is really rare for any car to use that size. I told him that's what my car came with, and he said "oh, well a bmw might come with that size". He was kind a dick, too, so I won't be going there for my tires.
Thanks for the reply, btw.
liquidtiger720 08-24-2005, 01:19 AM On my 5er- Falken st-115's. I've only had a couple miles on them, so no comment about anything.
Moms 740i - Dunlop sp sport a2 plus. Which I think are darn good tires. The look good, and handle pretty well for what they are. Not to mention a 50,000 mile warranty. Much better than my old michelin mxv4's. But the sidewalls are a little too not-stiff.
BeBeBloo 08-24-2005, 01:53 AM I'm running the 225/60/15 size and it's a falken ze512. I just got it about a month ago so not much to say about it. As of impressions, the ride is good and quiet. I did a test run on it doing about 80mph and accelerating on a curve and it stuck on the asphalt like glue. Haven't played with it much on the rain so no comment on that. So first impression is pretty good and the price, i got it for around 80usd each, dunno if that's cheap or not. oh, it's unidirectional too. Hope that helps. ;)
darkness95m3 08-24-2005, 08:49 AM I'm running Yokahama AVS100 255/45/17 rear and 235/45/17 fronts..
Hmm let me go and check ...brb....
Yes thats what I'm running on my car.
BMW 5 SERIES 08-24-2005, 08:54 AM Fulda Extremo 240/45/17
Kdog2112 08-24-2005, 09:55 AM On my stock wheels I ran michellin mxv4's 15" I think they were 205/60 or soemthing like that
On my upgrade wheels I run 235/40/zr18 front (Sumitomo HTRZ II)
and rear 265/35/zr18 (Sumitomo HTRZ II)
On my old bottle caps I ran Michelin MXV4 Energy. They were great non-sporty tires. Very quiet, lasted forever, pretty good in the rain. I now run Bridgestone Potenza SO3s. Very sticky, good in the rain, blink and its time for a new set.
Phat Ham 08-24-2005, 11:34 AM I'm running Toyo T1-R 265/35-18 all around. Good dry grip, unbelievable wet grip. I almost think they grip better in the wet than in the dry. Can get a little noisy on certain surfaces. The sidewalls are a little on the soft side, so turn in isn't as good as it could be, but it does give a smooth ride. Overall a great street tire and they are relatively inexpensive.
shragon 08-24-2005, 11:54 AM falken azenis st-115 in 245/40-18.
pros:
good tire for a daily driver. good dry grip and good wet grip. very quiet, even to the end of the tire life. lasts fairly long for a low profile tire (got about 20k on my last set). low price. beaded rim protector. good looks.
cons:
there are of course better peformance tires on the market (but others may not be the best choice for everyday driving because of price and them wearing out too quickly). compared to some other brands, in the same tire size, the falkens may run a little narrower.
Bat Guano 08-24-2005, 03:04 PM Just got these ..handle not bad really, interesting to see what the wear pattern will be since the tread is deeper in the center of the tire
snaybird1000 08-24-2005, 04:37 PM I'm running Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s. 225/55/16. Great budget tire, but they don't preform great.
Andryuha 08-24-2005, 04:49 PM I got some shitty all-season cooper tires. Bought them in january and they do just fine in the snow and dry pavement
photoz 08-24-2005, 06:30 PM Conti ExtremeContacts... just got them, they're nice so far. Some minor virbration when cold, after they warm up it goes away. something I read about them to make them do this, forgot the verb used.
MartinV 08-24-2005, 10:10 PM Pirelli P-Zero Nero, Great Tires, Lots of grip, very low noise.
318qship 08-25-2005, 01:08 AM 245 / 35 / 20 Nitto 555
275 / 30 / 20 Nitto 555
Not bad tires at all, except that mine in the rear are all sliced up from my car be to low. :eyecrazy
SpecRaceM5 08-25-2005, 01:32 AM Falken Azenis sports rt 215's. Great grip. Over heat easily though. Noisy. Terrible tread life. Were cheap when they made them though. Getting new tires soon. Next set will be the cheapest ones I can find or what ever has the best tread life, depending on price. I have some other things I need to do to the car and cant afford to get tires every couple months. After those, I will probably get the new rt615's. Talked to a guy at the auto x about them. Supposedly they have as good if not better dry trip, better wet grip, better endurance. (this is the biggest problem with the 215's.) But they cost alot more. Cant wait to get some though....oOooh on second thought. My next tires after my cheapos will be a good set of r compounds for racing.
Summer: Michelin PS A/S
Winter: Blizzacks WS-15's
5mall5nail5 08-25-2005, 01:46 PM Kumho 712's
235/45/17 front

silverE39 08-25-2005, 03:22 PM Bridgestone's S03s. Gripy, stiff, looks good. Expensive......
sdwhitney 08-25-2005, 03:38 PM Toyo TS-1 Proxes
235/40/18's front
265/35/18's in the rear
Stickiest I have ever had.

When I bought my e39, the previous owner had these tires on. Rears were worn badly on the inside, fronts worn almost as bad on the outsides.
I put an extra 1K on them before replacing them, right before I got the new shoes, I noticed the Toyos were already exposing steel braids!!!
Very sticky, but very poor treadlife, thats the tradeoff.

PS2's!! :buttrock
