View Full Version : SL65 v E60M5
Ibiza 08-23-2005, 10:13 AM [- This was a week ago, when I was in Europe. The SL belongs to my mother (her 'weekend car'). ]
So my girlfriend and I are driving to Algarve Portugal from Marbella Spain (about 6 hr drive)
Im driving the SL on a backroad in a small town called Faro, arriving to algarve - and this M5 turn in from a sideroad. His angel eyes are on, and im just cruising- probably 60meters head of him by the beginning. Then he approches and switches his xenon lamps on (it was about sunset, not quite dark) and as he approches, he just overtakes me in the highrevs and continues to accelerate.
Moments go by, and i notice he slows up, being held up by a 320d, with a truck on the otherside, disabling him from overtaking... so I catch up, and wait for the truck to pass, and I take the opportunerty before he does, so I overtake both bmws. He quickly follows, and at this point im 'flooring' it. I remember taking a turn at 115mph, almost getting off the road and decide to slow down- of which he appears to be on my tail. At this point i am coasting at 110mph and a peugeot hatch is in front....obviously i have to slow down- so the m5 gets beside me to overtake, but only reached the rear tire by the time i was right behind the peugeot - i had to let him by to avoid contact.
eventually i overtake the hatch and notice the m5 waiting, not letting me back on the right side. I see a truck approching from a distance, so i need to make a move quick and it just turns into an outright drag between the m5 and myself. Luckily it is a straight road for a few miles up hill terrains here and there but straight road for the most part. The m5 started ahead, but as soon as i gave fully gas, the mercedes began to walk. by the time i was side by side, the walking was even quicker because of turbo lag im guessing... The truck is very near at the point and honking... I overtake the m5 and switch lanes right on time, and was probably inches from contact with it. The truck never slowed down (european drivers are crazy) and expected me to make a move....
So basically I continue to speed, and the M5 follow and drafts, until he switched off his xenon lamps and flashed his angel eyes....
We actually stayed on the same road together until reaching algarve, and actually saw the car at the marina, parked. It was a guy in his 40s probably, good driver, beautiful sounding car, - and i must say, very wealthy as I saw him driving a murcielago roadster, which was more sexy than Brooke Burke.
thought I'd share - I wasn't expecting to see the new M5 so soon, but in Europe perhaps some have received their orders.
Sorry no pics of it...
fastdream 08-23-2005, 10:23 AM That sounds like fun. I'm kinda annoyed at the guy for forcing you into a game of chicken, those are some high stakes to be playing with - but the heat of battle can cause some strange behavior.
You never mentioned what your girl was saying during all this, was she passed out from fear or what? :)
Amazing cars...I'm jealous.
slickav 08-23-2005, 10:24 AM Awesome!
What kind of times do SL65's put out?

high 11's or low 12's depending on traction with trap speeds ~120mph iirc.
BimmerLover84 08-23-2005, 10:46 AM R&T quotes 12.0 at 122 mph. I've read some times in the mid to high 11s.
Ibiza 08-23-2005, 10:47 AM You never mentioned what your girl was saying during all this, was she passed out from fear or what? :)
My girlfriend was actually very calm. But when we almost got off the road, she only said "dont go so fast", and in an indifferent tone of voice, then continues to read her Vogue magazine. But shes from Lisbon, where you have some of the worst drivers in Europe (worst meaning, careless and offensive.)

Those guys are probably close to right - but i have no idea.
Its pure power though, very good speed and torque. But the M5 did extremely well, for an N/A car with over 100hp disadvantage. The SL65 has around 605hp while the M5 is, as you know at 500hp... But the torque of the SL is the most amazing part.... Im quite positive it would beat a SC'd M3 with 550hp...(if that much hp is even reachable for the m3)
abtmuda 08-23-2005, 03:07 PM What kills the SL is the 4700lbs of weight.

I saw high 11s in one magazine with the AC on and the seat massagers going.
sl65 is truly overkill, and I can't get enough of it. :D
mihalis 08-23-2005, 04:50 PM I'm just reading this in pure amazement...the new M5 a 500hp car, being overtaken by the SL65 AMG...WOW!!! Now that is a serious race, I can't even begin to imagine how to drive a car with that much hp. Awesome race, what speeds did you guys finally get those cars up to? I'm assuming you stayed below 155mph? :)
sexy325 08-23-2005, 06:20 PM What kills the SL is the 4700lbs of weight.
i don't think it matters when you are putting down 700 pounds of torque at 2000+ rpm and 600+ hp coming after that.
they trap mid 11s given right drivers/traction.. even if you mess up, you will trap in the 12s... read it in Automobile...
SL65 traps like sprayed vettes..
Let's not forget price:
$185k v. $90k
BTW, marry that girlfriend of yours.
zeidakiss 08-23-2005, 06:46 PM honestly the sl65 amg is my favourite car in the world and i would take it over any bmw... i think. that car makes me go nuts anyways i still love bmw's and ima true fan.
I am still about 20 years to young to drive a Mercedes--even one that can suck my eyeballs out. Just not my kind of car.

all i remember actually seeing was 115, of which i took that turn at.
i am definate we hit higher than that, possibly 130 (on a small road it looked and felt like 180)
I never knew i'd drive one..and i dont know how my mother handles the car either....

you're absolutely right, ,there is a huge price gap... with 5 extra grand, on the SL65 money, you could get 2 M5s... But the SL is surely a proper exotic, despite it looking just like an sl55... but this car can seriously give a murcielago a run....But weight will always drag this car, when compared to other exotics in its own range....
for the record, its probbly 5 times better than the SLR.
m3rdpower 08-24-2005, 12:38 AM One thing he got guts, that truck woulda ran over the SL easily. :eyecrazy
thegman1234 08-24-2005, 12:42 AM great story man awesome kill, im jealous the sl65 is my dream car dude.
Mikael 08-24-2005, 05:35 AM I would also take the SL65 over any BMW anyday. The SL is much better looking than any current BMW. Sure, some BMWs handles better but the SL65 is more than enough for me anyway :)
thedude 08-24-2005, 06:19 AM Wow, what a race. And what a douchebag M5 driver for not letting you overtake him as a truck is coming head on!
for the record, its probbly 5 times better than the SLR.
Why do you say that?
giterdone 08-24-2005, 06:40 AM Hahaha, at the end of the story I was like "WTF? Where is the statements about the girlfriend squaking in the ear?"
But that sounds bad ass. Almost like out of a movie. I know I would've raced right down the straight toward the oncoming traffic (I've done stupid things like that before :( ) But damn, SL65 is the best AMG out right? I think I'm remembering correctly.
I forget his name, but doesn't a guy on the board have a SL55 and a Viper or maybe it is a 65.
Ibiza 08-24-2005, 07:47 AM Why do you say that?
Well maybe not 5 times better, but I prefer turbo from supercharging. Plus this is biturbo V12, versus a supercharged v8. Im really not sure which is better out of the two but the SLR should have been a v12, in my opinion.

agreed, the slr has more horsies though, but the sl65 has more torque, but the slr was better designed for performance than the sl65 was(not saying that the sl isnt designed to perform), so it's probably faster than the sl65, but the sl65 is still blazing fast.
nomoreM3 08-24-2005, 05:53 PM haven't you guys seen that post of the SL65 at the drag strip...i think it was at the sears strip
stock tires n everything...11.7 1/4...beat a modded Z06
the vid was on here a while ago
now that i've said that...i've never been more jelous of a kill-story in my life...haha...no joke...your mom's weekend car is an SL65...you drove it...you beat the new M5...just the fact that you SAW the M5, let alone raced him...and you beat him...in your frikkin moms car...jesus lord
right on man...right freakin on
will you be my friend? lol

interesting thing is, her everyday car is an M3 cab (e46 surely enough)...Which means she has the 343hp'd one *euro spec*.
she has a thing for classy looking cars, because shes a classy lady herself.
At first I didn't want to ask her, but she just offered, and handed me the keys. I think it was because my girlfriend was there, otherwise im pretty sure, she wouldn't let me touch it, if i were by myself.
Once again though, that M5 was clear, very good looking car, and in the pale metellic blue/titainium color that it was on, it looked as good as it could, especially with that sunset against it. I can honestly say it looks more aggressive than the SL, just in stance. The exhaust pitch is amazing as well - and i must say, it backfires on stock mufflers...
honestly, its hard to say which i'd rather have... Im not a Merc buyer, and the SL65 being nearly 200k doesn't help much.

I agree, I don't know either, I have been such a fan of BMW's for such a long time, I would love the have the E60 M5...OMG, I droul just thinkin about it. It's soooooo fast and it has 4 doors and can transport 5 people in a really big hurry if needed :D I look at MB's more like cruisers, nice relaxing ride, but so much power on demand if you dare to use it :devillook
FrankW 08-25-2005, 02:47 AM cool run...I sure wish I was there when it happened. love to see these cars.

Im ready .....gimmieeee gimmiieee.........I need :help
PS. Why must you make our mouths water just that much more for the m5... I mean isnt it hard enough on us that we wont see it still for a couple more months?
NO MORE TEASERS! :eyecrazy

Yes, I saw many 530i with the m-tech kit...it looks nice, but i dont like the rear 'diffusor', that could have been done more like the 330's.

the ferrari?
the 550 only has i think 490hp or 480... but its abit lighter and should have a good chance....if the 550 doesn't beat it, a 575 def will...

but now you can say your moms car is faster than a 550 Maranello! haha
it's actually a very very close race until the end when the M5 pulls about 1 to 1.5 cars on the Ferrari

i saw that video too. they were accelerating at pretty much the same rate, but the 550 just suddenly dropped off. I doubt it's because of the new M5 is that much faster, but probably because there are mechanical or human error in the 550 that caused the slow down.

Honestly, i'd rather have the 550...but...it wasn't human error for sure...you can hear it...if anything he was in his last gear, 6th...while the M5 still had 1-2 gears left...7spd
they were going pretttttyyy fast

ehh, i dunno about that one... After seeing the M5 in person, and having it drive buy while shifting gears, I'd take the M5....Besides, the 550 was the worst Ferrari of the 90s... The 355 gets more respect (for good reason, but still...its got smaller balls)
- i dont want to imagine the M5 with a manual box.... would probably be the best car to drive since the 993 turbo.

Even though performance wise the M5 is up there with the F430 and such...the reason I said that is only because it's a Ferrari...haha. I'm still in my 20's so I really dont care much about other people's comfort, and would rather have the sportier car. Shoot, even my STi is a 2-seater now.
Dont get me wrong about the M5, it is THE MOST AWSOME SEDAN, PERIOD. But i'd much rather have the M6.... :D
edit: i agree about the F355 comment though...it might be because it's the only Ferrari I have ever driven. But the F355 does get more respect from me as well.
giterdone 08-25-2005, 05:41 PM hell I'd rather have the 550. I love the 550 and 575. I think they are sweet as hell. Don't quite stand out with that in your face, blatant exotic ferarri look. Especially after watching Bad Boys II. :embarrasm
Schneller Bayer 08-26-2005, 12:31 AM the ferrari?

I've mentioned this before, some may remember, but a german car magazine conducted 80-200kmh acceleration runs, and the m5 got second, beating the f430, murcielago, gallardo, 550, 911 turbo (lost to 911 gt2 though), and the maranello among many others. Now, This is all theoritical, but I would guess the lambo beats the 575, and the m5 pulled the lambo, so, i doubt the 45 hp increase (it was increased from 485 to 508, to 515, to 530 i believe) would turn the tables quite yet. Some othe german or british magazine recently tested an m6 0-62 (not 0-60) in 4.2 seconds. Crazy engine.
Ferraris simply cost too much to maintain :mad ..
They say each mile you drive in one is like another dollar out of your pocket.
This is on top of the price you'll be paying for the vehicle. Its probably the
biggest factor holding most people back from buying a ferrari.
I guess you really have to be a rich uncle to buy one
nomoreM3 08-26-2005, 04:17 PM or you can buy that one Ferrari F40 replica with the twin turbo 4.0L Toyota/Lexus V8
that thing is bad...and Toyota parts are a fraction of the cost...haha
it was like 800bhp or somethin...
giterdone 08-26-2005, 04:18 PM not sure if it's true, but I heard with like newer ferraris, at 32k miles, you have to get soem sort of service done, taht costs $15k. So most used ferrari's you see, are sitting at 30k.

The 550 is heavily modified. It crushed the 575 in an earlier race.

double-you tea eff...no way!
so can you confirm what me and the C32 guy were discussing previously...if the M5 won because it was jus flat out faster...or if there was human/mechanical error on the 550's part
