View Full Version : "Last Z8" SPOTTED
Ohtwo 08-22-2005, 02:20 PM I spotted a black Z8 in central New Jersey, near englishtown, on RT. 9
After giving the driver the cheesiest thumbs up ever, I noticed the license plate read "Last Z8."
If someone did a check, we could probaly find out if it was really the last Z8.
BTW, it was a nice car. It took me a second to realise what I was looking at.
fgraziano 08-22-2005, 03:55 PM Considering the headquarters is located in NJ it wouldn't be too far fetched a possiblity.

Yep, its as active as the 318 section.

Yep, they only came in automatics I believe. I think they were going for the big, expensive luxo coupe, like the Mercedes SL.
Preppy 08-24-2005, 06:24 PM Maybe he's wrecked so many z8's that his wife made him get that plate to remind him that he couldn't get anymore if he wrecked that one?

I don't think so. The first and last Z8s are in the Mobile Tradition Collection (Part of BMW AG) housed in Garching (Munich suburb). I saw both when I toured Mobile Tradition in July of 2003 when I collected my Z8 via European delivery. The only way his is the last is if he stoled it!!!!
On second thought, it could be the last Alpina, but then his plate should read "Last Alpina V8 Roadster" since it is not a Z8. Oh wait, that won't fit on the plate. Oh well. :buttrock
Meeyatch1 08-28-2005, 12:12 PM There is a guy tha lives not far from here that I always see driving his Alpina Z8 around....everytime I see it I almost wreck my car from looking back at it. LOL! :stickoutt :D
Ohtwo 08-28-2005, 01:10 PM How do you identify a Alpina Z8? Are they all considered Alpina's?
themadhatter 08-28-2005, 01:19 PM has an alpina tag on the back and the driver has a HUGE budget.
///M Blitz 08-28-2005, 08:50 PM How do you identify a Alpina Z8? Are they all considered Alpina's?
They are visually quite similar, but mechanically completely different. The Z8 uses the same S62 400hp Motorsport-built V8 used in the e39 M5, along with the same 6 speed manual trans. The Alpina V8 Roadster (not Z8) uses a version of the 4.8L V8 used in the X5 with a slushbox. Externally, the Z8 has purpose built 18" wheels, while appropriately enough the Alpina has 20" Alpina wheels. There are other differences, but those are the most significant.

I agree, but slight mistake. I think its the 4.6L from the X5 4.6is, the 4.8 came out this MY2005, too new. I've read the auto tranny couldnt handle the torque from the S62.
And the best way to tell the difference b/t Alpina or Z8, if you cant see inside, are the rims, Alpina one has the classic style of Alpina rims.
Now why can't they bring other Alpina products to the US!
edit: I'm wrong, scroll down.
themadhatter 08-30-2005, 02:37 PM actually, you're both slightly off.
the 4.8L is an Alpina motor, not the 4.8 or 4.6 found in the premium X5.
the 4.8L pumps out MORE torque then the S62.

Actually, I'm not slightly off. I said that it "uses a version of the 4.8L V8..." and it does. The operative word being "version." Being a Z8 owner, I'm pretty well versed in the ins and outs of the Z8 and its distant cousin.
And you are correct, the Alpina V8 Roadster does have more torque, but it runs out of breath much sooner than the S62.
SickFinga 08-31-2005, 09:43 AM 4.6 engine that is in the X5 4.6is is actually Alpina engine
4.8 engine that is in the X5 4.8is is NOT Alpina
4.8l in Alpina V8 Roadster is Alpina and was available on B10 V8S before appearing on the V8 roadster.
Just wondering why BMW decided to built all new engine when 4.8is was already available?

No problem, it's all good!!!
Why don't you like the X3 though? It handles like a car, has good power (3.0i), takes all my ski gear and has enough clearance to let me get away with no snow chains most of the time (can't say that about the 330ix or wagon)?

Well the M6 is a classic, the M3 is what it is, 750 is a V12 :buttrock (it is an e38 right?), Z8 goes without saying. Of course someones daily driver can't be as kickass as the above, although I just have problems with the X3, just the styling looks so awkward, I'm not totally jumping on the hate bangle bandwagon, I do like the Z4. Anyway, it seems to fit your lifestyle, and with a stable like yours, you have a collection I dream of.
Have you posted pics of all the cars together before? Would be a beautiful selection of BMW's.

Tubi does not make an exhaust system for the Z8. I wish they did, but they don't. The most popular aftermarket exhaust for the Z8 is made by Eisenmann, so if it was an aftermarket exhaust, that was probably it. However, the Z8 OEM exhaust has a pretty throatty sound, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was just stock.
Henrik Fisker was the designer of the Z8. Shortly after that he went to Ford PAG and designed most of the current Aston Martins. He now heads Fisker Coachworks based in Southern California. They just released their two new designs based on the BMW 6 series and the Mercedes SL. Check out the link below for details.

Most of the Z8 owners, myself, included spend most of their time over on Roadfly. Check it out if you want to see more posts.

Thanks. I believe that there were just over 170 6-speed Z8s produced for the 03 model year (most built in 02). Of course the entire Alpina Roadster run (555 total units) was in 2003.
Mine was one of the last Z8, 6-sp produced (Jan-03). We picked it up on European delivery and drove it for a couple of days around Munich before we dropped it off at the factory for shipping back to Los Angeles.
I'm not crazy about the Fisker designs, but I think the one based on the BMW 6 series is a vast improvement over the monstrosity BMW is building.

Ok the FACTS:
E52 Z8 produced 01-03 Motor S62 B50
E52 Aplina Roadster V8 produced 03 M62B48
The M62 is used in 740, 540, 4.4 x5, 4.6 X5 ( actually from MY 99+ it is a M62TU for technical update motors got some upgrades that year)
The X5 4.6 had a M62 4.4 bored out...
Same with the Z8 aplina M62 bored out to 4.8
In MY 04 the " new genration" motors was relased in the X5
the 04 4.8 X5 has a N not M N62B48
Same motor in the new 750's 550's or 650's
The first version 745, 545, or 645 has a N62B44
( the BXX is the liter size btw)
So my point was the Alpina Z8 cost more gets an AUTOMATIC crap box and is NOT EVEN CLOSE to a true "M" motor.
O and if you want a true rare Z8 get a EURO version.. I know a guy in Utah with one... still has the plastic covers on the door seals :alright but drives it all the time..... :buttrock

Actually, there were less U.S. Z8s produced than Euro versions and there is no difference in the motor (hp, torque, etc.) The only differences are in the tailights (two-tone yellow/red in the Euro versions). Also, there was one exterior color available in the Euro cars not available in the U.S.
So if you want a true rare Z8, get a U.S. car. BTW, the Euros are far cheaper than the U.S. cars because BMW NA will not honor the warranty here.

You're sort of correct, but sort of not. Henrik was the head of DesignWorks in Thousand Oaks, California when he penned the Z8. DesignWorks was and is a semi-autonomous design house that works for other firms not just BMW. They design everything from cars to ergo chairs, to...
What BMW did was ask DesignWorks to come up with their own designs, which were (maybe still are) than evaluated against BMW internal designs. The best rendition would then be selected. So while Chris Bangle was technically Henrik's boss, it was not in the traditional "you draw and tell you what direction to go," but far more independent than that.
For that reason, Chris Bangle can't really take credit for the Z8 design.

Sorry for the confusion. U.S. Z8s came with the full four-year, 50K mi. warranty covering all maintenance. I agree with you, anything else would have been whack. There is no way I would have bought a Z8 without a full warranty.
What happened was that to make sure that people did not import "grey market" Z8s into the U.S., BMW NA did not honor the warranty. For instance, if you bought a car in Germany and then imported it into the U.S., BMW NA did not honor the warranty.
The issue was exchange rates back in 2000 when the Z8s first came to market. The exchange rate between the Euro and the Dollar was such that it was cheaper to buy a Z8 in Germany and then import it into the U.S. Of course, the exchange rates are now upside down and that's no longer an issue. In fact, I've heard rumors of Germans buying U.S. Z8s and importing them back to Germany.
Hope that makes sense.

Yeah, pretty much any grey market car anymore is hard to get factory warranty to work and insure.
I got a ride in a z8 and test drove a 02 m coupe. Even from not driving the z8 I think the m coupe was funnier. HEHE. Having a small car to toss around is funnier to me. But then again when you have the money to buy a z8 you typically have a daily driver. LOL
I remember about 3-4 years ago at the dealerships since alot of them only got 1 maybe 2 z8's that it was pretty much a auction of the car at the dealership with the starting price being the MSRP. Curious if that wass true of anywhere else besides Virginia?

The thing is most dealers were "forced" by BMW to take silver cars, with over 50% of production being silver. Also, Henrik Fisker (the designer) is on record as saying that he meant for the car to be silver. So most of the guys bought what was on the showroom. I special ordered mine so there was no doubt it was going to be red with sport red interior.
We just had a meet of Z8s here in L.A. at a local show and out of seven cars mine was the only red one. It really grabbed people's attention.
The 750iL is a real sleeper and definitely my favorite for long drives. I routinely surprise people. I'll give e39 M5's and e55 Mercs a good run for their money and spank lesser models like 540is and e500. Just the other day an e65/66 750iL "tried to race me" and I destroyed him. The look on the guy's fact was priceless.
I saw two Z8s in Portland over the summer, one silver, one black.
The black one was from New Jersey, which I would of never remembered not having read this thread. Anyone know how many were made in black?

There are no exact figures on Z8 production available (one day someone will get all the stats from BMW), but guessimates place silver at about 50% of the cars or roughly 2,500 cars, black at 25% or roughly 1,250, red at about 12% or roughly 600 cars, topaz blue at around 8% or roughly 400 cars and the remainder were stratus grey, which was only available in the U.S. in the last model year.
Mblaster 12-23-2005, 08:56 PM anyone else besides me think that z8's are ugly?
Nope.
I think the general consensus is that they are a thing of beauty.

I've liked them since I saw the Jackie Chan film "The Tuxedo." Not as much as my Z4 (for the same money, I'd get the Hartge Z4 5.0), but still very nice.

i'm actually curious too..
the CEO of my old company had a stratus grey z8. Absolutely gorgeous. he had quite a collection of cars, restored 60's benzes, a large collection of other euro makes. His DD was a pretty tricked out Audi A8. we actually had alot of bimmers there.
K69camaroz28 12-31-2005, 01:21 PM I keep seeing the same z8 parked across the street from the shop at a bank its so beautifull i live in jersey about 30min from raceway park maybe it's the same guy?

You are just nuts, the car looks awesome, oldschool look and feel, but absolutely sublime modern lines.
The Z8 was designed after the classic 507

And they did an excelent job of capturing the car's lines.
Shockwave179 01-02-2006, 05:21 AM i'll keep an eye out
It's one of my friends Dad. Only Silver Alpina Z8 in Rochester.
Vinci 01-03-2006, 12:15 AM I drooled on a black Alpina Z8 in Sarasota, FL recently during a parts run to the dealer. Very sharp.
Neighbor owns a silver Alpina Z8, never drives it and his kids arn't even allowed to touch it :(
GriffMZ3 01-04-2006, 05:08 PM there is a silver one at the local dealer here in Buffalo. i love that i'm fixing my M and have to go there and drool everyday!
sad thing is, its full of snow :(
When I was working for Hertz some chick pulled in with a Z8 and asked for directions, nice looking car.
PDWebb 01-07-2006, 07:46 PM Funny posts are telling what was the last one they saw. But anyway today, 5:30 ish Augusta Georgia. Beautiful black Alpina.

Bimmerguy27 03-18-2006, 07:55 PM I saw a black z8 in Marina Del Rey getting onto the 90 back in Feb. It was a manual.
VooDoo XII 03-22-2006, 02:56 PM Yep, its as active as the 318 section.
Haha...and Z8's still sell better than 5-Series Wagons.
Sherman321 04-01-2006, 09:57 AM Sorry, but that's not correct.
Henrik Fisker -- see www.fiskercb.com (http://www.fiskercb.com) -- was the designer of the Z8, not Chris Bangle. Henrik then moved to Ford/Aston Martin and was the designer of most of the current Astons. And yes Henrik did start a new car company.
///M Blitz (aka Dan)
I thought Ian Callum designed most of the new Astons. Was Fisker responsible for the DB7 and Vanquish?
BavarianBeast 04-04-2006, 01:48 PM Maybe he's wrecked so many z8's that his wife made him get that plate to remind him that he couldn't get anymore if he wrecked that one?
:lol :lol :lol :lol
Findley 04-08-2006, 10:17 PM It was mostly about the M6, which they call the best in the World (I agree) but it did have my other cars as well.

BTW, the M6 won 1st Place in the stock category (naturally they had a modified category) at Bimmerfest in Santa Barbara, CA yesterday. They claimed that there were over 500 BMWs there.
RLich8 04-10-2006, 10:42 PM In my garage. :D
Earthman03 04-11-2006, 06:10 PM I saw one in Orlando, Florida. It was a light silver with, I think, red leather. The Z8s did have the option of red leather, right?

Yes, there was an option of a two-tone red and black nappa leather on all Z8 Roadsters.
